2003 AC 2wd LSD Rear Axle Leaking Question

It may not help, but we have 2 completely rust free axles here in TX. One with the 3.91, one with, 4.10. Both out of 02 ACs.

 

It's out of a 2004 Access Cab SR5. It's actually a red one like mine if I needed body panels. All they have left is the axle, cab and bed. They did just list another gold access cab at the same location that I need to ask about.

Edit: If I hadn't caused the leak to get worse by trying to clean it up last weekend, I might have used the truck to go get it. But now, I definitely don't trust driving it that far with how quickly it is leaking.

 

I know about the cab type difference. unfortunately all the trucks close by me are all double cabs, even on the part finder website or they are non-ABS axles. I will probably just bite the bullet and either rent a truck or borrow someone's truck to go look at these two south of Huntsville from me. It's about a 3 hour drive. The other ones I've seen are just north of Atlanta which is slightly further for me.

I agree that it looks like a non-LSD but looks to have ABS. Is there really that much difference between the LSD and non on these trucks? It's been a long time since I've owned a rear wheel drive vehicle and my truck is 2WD anyway.

My whole brake system got bleed during the timing belt change and front brake replacement. The dealership never bleed the brakes after changing out the frame for my dad. So, that was the second thing I had done after the timing belt. So far, the little bit I have been able to drive it, the brakes feel really good.

 

I wish you were closer to me but I am in Middle TN in between Chattanooga and Nashville. That would be a long haul to go get one. But thank you for mentioning them.

 

You can swap your LSD third into that axle

 

I had considered that as an option, especially since I just had the pinion seal changed in it already. And then I could either hold on to (wife probably won't like that sitting in the garage) or sell this one to recoup some money on the axle.

 

I mean, if the flange matches, I’d probably prefer the non-LSD. But that’s just me. More than anything I’d be worried about gearing. If you, for example, currently had 3.91 and that is a 4.1, then that’s a total score. And lack of LSD would mean you can use damn near any diff juice you want.

 

I currently have the 3.91 gears in the truck. I'll look at the post that listed all of the gear ratios by year/cab type/driveline and look at what possibly the donor could be. When you say flange matches you are referring to the ABS mounting flange on the axle housing? I hadn't thought about the benefits of the non-LSD and the type of gear oil issues, that's a good point. I'll reach out to them later today about both trucks that they have now at the yard and get info about the second axle as well since I already have the info on the first one. Thanks @shifty`

Pic here, I dunno compatibility/BCD of the different flanges, they’re all 4-bolt though IIRC. I just know some trucks are different diameter and thus bolt spacing. Nothing you can’t work around/transfer over.

 

Okay, I thought that might be the other flange you were referring to. Just wanted to make sure.

I looked up their address again and I was off a bit on location. They are located SW of Birmingham, not Huntsville. Had the right drivetime though.

On edit: I looked up the gear ratio list, I should have the 3.92 ratio for a 2wd AC.

Nope, definitely won't be doing that! That is crazy what some people will do.

I had a '73 Nova that I was doing a transmission swap on. Should have been a 3-4 hour job turn into a week long nightmare. First, broke off 2 bolts in the pinion yoke trying to remove drive shaft. Went to you pull yard and got a new yoke to replace it. While trying to get the retaining nut off, blew a brake line (emergency brake didn't work at the time so had to push on brake pedal). Was not a fun time. Eventually got it back on the road for about 4 months and then blew out the oil pan gasket on my way home and spun 2 main bearings. Decided that was enough for that car and got rid of it.

 

Update on the axle replacement front. Have not gotten a new donor yet. Finally got moved into the new house and currently unpacking. I have found a couple of donor trucks at LKQ in Chattanooga and a couple of axles on car-parts.com as well. Quick question for those that have used LKQ, do they ship from one place to another? We have a local one that doesn't show up on the site. Next question, I found one that is an exact replacement for what I have in mine now with 80k miles on it. Would that be worth $1600 for the complete axle?

That's what I thought on this one. I'll post some screenshot of the ones from my list that aren't that far. I'm thinking about just taking leaf springs and all when I get one as mine are so rusted anyway.

 

Newest update on the axle replacement. Finally got one ordered that is coming from a yard in Birmingham and being shipped up to their local (to me) yard just south of Nashville. Should be up here Mon or Tue. Can't wait to go pick it up. My daughter starts driving to school at the end of the month so I need to finish this up and get the 02 sensors in before then.
