So for anyone who is about to have the engine swap. Once complete really monitor your coolant levels. Mine dropped significantly after first 100 miles and then cooling overnight. This was after a 35 mile test drive by the dealer. I had to go back to dealership to have about a half gallon added to the engine coolant side of the container; level was almost out of sight. Intercooler side was fine.
Since topping up it has been file and now done about 300 miles since Friday 28th.

    Good tip.

There’s a great YouTube video from a Toyota master tech who talks about the massive amount of coolant these engines require, and how important it is to vacuum all the air out of the system when doing the long block swap.

it’s not as easy as parking the truck with the nose end higher to burp the air out, like the good old days.

    Year 2022
    Miles on truck: 32,385
    Issues before replacement? No
    Dealer used: KC Summers Toyota
Test miles put on by tech: 6
New and old engine serial numbers on receipt: No
truck cleaned in or out? Not sure, truck was clean before going in and same going out.
    New engine air filter? No
Service advisor gave break in requirements? None stated
Service advisor stated to expect some burning smells possible first few miles.
Additional warranty on new engine? Already have a Toyota extended warranty out to 100k, nothing else stated.

    Comments:
The service advisor stated that everything went smoothly, and that seems to be the case. I dropped the truck off on Monday (work starting on Tuesday) and received a phone call mid-morning Thursday that the everything was done. The service advisor told me that all of the swaps are being done cab-on by their 40 year veteran master tech, so far this was only the second long block swap they have performed. For a loaner vehicle I was given a brand new 2025 Tundra that had a window sticker stating “Toyota Fleet Vehicle Not For Sale”. I’ve already put 400 miles on the new engine since pick up, and have been happy with everything so far. I noticed as others have stated that the delayed throttle response seems to be gone.

Thanks for your report, and welcome to the forum.

So far, it seems the vast majority of experiences have been positive.

Positive experience after 800ish miles on my new engine: I mentioned earlier that idle seems to be smoother. It is MUCH smoother on this new engine, despite my old engine not having any issues. Previously I could feel the engine idling through the brake pedal and today I noticed that I barely feel it idling now, which is great!

Had mine replaced at 54K no issues, oil change and oil sample at every 5K showed no issues or warning flags.

I was driving back home to Wisconsin from Miami . Over 1300 miles from home , My 2022 Tundra experienced a catastrophic engine failure . Heard a Thump and a surge then all power lost , check engine light on dash, brake malfunction warning lights. About 300 miles before that I felt a very small thump a couple of times but didn’t pay much attention to it.

I contacted Toyota roadside assistance thru the sos button in the ceiling. Person answered immediately. They knew my location and info on my truck. Gave me a case number and ordered a tow with triple A to the nearest dealer. 90 minutes later and I was towed to Toyota dealership , Gettel Toyota Of Lakewood.

It was 10 PM and I did not know what to expect. At 0700 the Gettel Toyota of Lakewood service center opened and I was directed to a smiling service writer named Yve. She immediately started my paperwork, and I gave her my case #.

After the service Techs trouble shooting, My 2022 Tundra needed a new engine ,available under the Toyota recall program, however it would normally take a week for the order to be completed and new engine delivered .

Yves' emphatic nature was quickly apparent as she immediately recognized my situation and began to try to solve it.
It seemed that the planets have aligned perfectly.
Yve and her Team found an engine , and the senior Master mechanic Ricardo personally assured me that He will get it installed for me in 1 day. Mind you this is now 0830. I was Very frustrated at the whole situation but too tired to show it. The dealership arranged a rental with enterprise with no cost to me, and Completed all the rental paperwork for me. I drove around the Bradenton area all day not knowing what to expect. I have heard some master mechanics that did a lot of these had a system that they can do these engine swaps in one day.

At 1630 hrs. I received a call that my Tundra was ready for pick up . 1700 hrs. I picked up my Tundra, freshly washed and running perfectly with my newly installed crate engine.
The only paperwork I had to deal with was a signature at the very end.
The whole process with this dealer Gettel Toyota of Lakewood in Bradenton Florida was completely painless. They know what they are doing that’s for sure. I have a ton of off road lights and all wiring was left undisturbed. Impressive.

I don't know how to begin to thank everyone involved. What seemed like an incredibly negative situation the night before , ultimately became positive and beneficial in the end. Dealers in my area are not at the level of this place.

36 hours later, and 1400miles, I arrived home without incident and during my time on the road Yve the service manager periodically checked up on my tundras performance.

Personal observation on the new engine.
    1. This was mentioned before. It idles smoother and quieter.
    2. MPG seems the same
    3. Oil gauge seemed to show a bit higher pressure at cold start up and fluctuates more during acceleration. The old engine was not that responsive on the oil gauge .

No leaks so far. Scheduling an oil change this week after 1400 miles on the new engine. Will continue with engine oil samples with Blackstone labs.

Note: I fail to be convinced that the issue on this recall is solely dirt in the engine from the assembly process.
All my oil samples since new, some I posted here on the forums, show a clean engine , very minimal wear metals. Then suddenly a catastrophic failure. Yes now in hindsight I noticed and felt subtle shutters that ultimately led to a catastrophic failure but it wasn’t chronological like a normal wear. I think there was a faulty part or parts and when it goes that’s it. Whatever was wrong I’m convinced Toyota knows about it, and addressed it. hence what it took soooo long for them to come up with a solution.
    Fingers crossed.

Last time I needed a tow from 1-800 Lexus I and the family were on the side of the road for 6+ hours waiting. Then I learned Lexus road side assistance was a AAA direct line paid for as a service to just answer Lexus instead of AAA. And that Lexus paid so little for towing that tow truck operators answered every other call before it

I tried calling aaa for 2 hours and couldn’t get thru. after 2 hrs. Sitting on the side of the road frustrated I looked up at the Toyota sos button and just pushed it. it was instant after that

Maybe Toyota has changed off AAA. My Lexus disaster was 2011 or so.

I did get a $100 gift card from AAA. The said they were using my voice tapes in training. Apparently I set a new watermark of annoyance.

I have just over 50k on my '22 SR5. New motor is going in Monday. I'll report back after the install. I've had zero issues with my truck, favorite truck I've owned so far. Other than the grossly overstated MPG from toyota, I feel like they hit it out of the park with this one! Bonus that I get a brand new engine after driving this one for 2 years. :)

Same here. I put about 40,000 miles on mine with no problems before I got my new engine. I took the engine mainly because I've heard enough stories of catastrophic engine failure between 40,000 miles and 60,000 miles. The only complaint I have is that my miles per gallon seem to have dropped about three in the city and two on the highway. Maybe it's because the engine is tight. I'm going to change my oil at about 3,000 miles just to make sure everything's perfect. I love my dealer. Toyota of Rancho Santa Margarita

Canadian 2022 Tundra Limited gas, with a November 2021 build date, with 60,000 kms. Sherwood Park Toyota, called me in February to set-up my recall replacement, as I was on their list [I bought one of the first 3rd Gen Tundra's in Alberta, Canada]. Replacement was done on March 8, 2025, and was completed in 2.5 days. They also completed my fuel line recall, and replaced my driver seat side panel under warranty, for the second time.

I have driven 1500 km's since the replacement, and have not noticed any performance related issues. It feels exactly the same to me. I initially noticed a reduction in fuel mileage, and a mild burning smell for a day or two. I am now noticing a slight improvement in fuel mileage, which seems to be gradually improving over time, even though it's been winter. Come spring/summer I think, I'll see a 1L/100 km, improvement on fuel mileage. So far. I'm happy.

I've got 40,000 miles I'm on my third replacement of the side panel and it's covered because it continues to break. Also I'm glad I got the extended warranty just in case it wasn't covered

Basically it's not considered just a trim piece because it has electronic components attached to it so it should be easier to get replaced under warranty

    Miles on truck: 46k
Issues before replacement? Throttle response lag, wind noise
Dealer used: Prestige Toyota in Kingston, NY
Test miles put on by tech: didn't notice
New and old engine serial numbers on receipt: Not that I see
Truck cleaned in or out? NO - inside and out the truck was normal New York winter dirty going in, came out the same (was hoping for a detail!)
New engine air filter? Need to check - I hope not, need to check! I just put in the TRD filters a month before going in
Service advisor gave break in requirements? None stated
Additional warranty on new engine? Nothing stated

    Comments:
I dropped the truck off on a Tuesday 8am and received a phone call mid-morning Thursday that the everything was done, they also did NYS inspection. The service advisor told me when I made the appointment that they do the cab-off method for all these replacements, they said they have done several customers already and said they did a few trucks from the lot to get trained (not sure if used ones or what). For a loaner vehicle I was given a 2025 Tundra CrewMax SR5 TRD pkg w/ 2k miles on it, less interior comfort options than mine but at least a familiar truck - I did notice the 2025 SR5 TRD pkg sits significantly higher than mine does, didn't measure it but noticeably more difficult to get in. I’ve put ~100 miles on the new engine since picking up, and so far so good seems to run smooth and strong. Did get slight burning smell for a day or 2 but I dont notice it anymore. Delayed throttle response seems to be gone! Mine was bad so AMEN to that.

I think it's a computer controlled break in period. Mine was the same way, but dramatically improved after 1000 kms on the new motor. Maybe they have it set to run rich at first.

I have a 2022 Tundra, that recently had engine replaced. All went very smooth and nothing so far has bothered me.Very happy with Toyota for backing this up.In fact all issues on the truck have been fixed on warranty. Not to worried about it, but I took noticed a little more lifter noise than before.Someone else mentioned it ,, so I know I'm not being paranoid.Could be breaking in I'm thinking.Anyway the truck runs awesome and I feel good about purchasing it.Hope that helps

I had been having a code pop up about Start/Stop malfunction. The auto start stop didn’t work, which was nice, but the message was super annoying. I finally got time to take it back. Turns out a connector was a little loose from the swap. Fixed for free. Checked out some new Tacomas, 4 Runners, and LandCruiser 250’s. Tacoma back seat is kind of pointless. The 4Runner and 250 are on point though.

Yes, I am north of the metro, and had mine done at Stapp Interstate Toyota in Frederick. They did a good job. See my above post for a very minor issue that didn’t cause any trouble.

2022 with 51k no problems till finally a wastegate on the turbo got stuck in the closed position. But they weren’t going to fix a turbo so they ordered an engine which took 6 days to come. Parker Toyota in North Idaho gave me a free loaner for the week and I put 1776 miles on a 2025 Tacoma. I drive a lot. Haha

They took my hood off and even with my bumper picked it up right up and out no problem. They said cab off is the hassle way to do it and they can get it done in 6 hours. And sure enough they did. Engine runs great, no issues, one signature at the end. I made some Instagram posts about it as well. They reuse the AC compressor, wiring harness, and alternator. My tech was a cool guy and I hung out and watched for a chunk of time. They’ve done about 60 so far. I have about 250 miles on the new engine and coolant levels are fine.

I continue to be impressed with the mostly positive engine swap experiences.

    Keep the updates coming, folks.

I get to be part of the New Engine Crowd and am excited. Looked at the Toyota app this morning and checked the Health portion and under Remedy it said "Any authorized Toyota dealer will replace the engine assembly FREE OF CHARGE to you". Went to the local dealer and they put my name on the list and ordered my engine. More updates to follow.
