and the Beast is home. Picked it up this morning. They changed a bunch of gaskets and I now have black sealant on both sides. They also did an oil change and pressure washed the engine bay.
Rental car for 3 days. Cost $0 total. Glad I had the warranty :) Thank you Toyota.
Now to monitor if any issues but so far feel the same when driving it.

I am a repeat cam tower loser. My 16 is going in this week to have them done again at 9,000 miles, first repair at 3,000 miles. My 12 had it done as well. I doubt toyota ever did anything to remedy it, almost every Tundra I look under is seeping, both mine leaked much more than seepage at really low miles. I believe it is bad engineering, FIPG gaskets require perfectly clean surfaces, proper RA(surface finish), and the deck must be in tolerance. So it is a crap shoot at the factory, and even worse with your local dealership tech. I change my oil ASAP, usually around 100 miles, and all kinds of crap comes out, and the filter is full of debris(chunks of FIPG), so I strongly recommend oil change soon.

No good. Was it the same black sealant they use the first time?

Well I’ve moved since the first repair, Denver to Phoenix, and even though the best guy for the job got it, it’s pretty obvious he sucked. Obviously my local dealer said workmanship issue, take it back(slim to no chance of getting it fixed right in Denver, and f that, too much trouble). There is a tight group of people here in AZ, and they put me in touch with the right people to sort it out, thanks @14burrito ! Bottom line, I won’t trust it after being taken apart twice, probably sell it and move on.

If you have black sealant, they have already been done. The gray is factory, and supposedly better.

Hmmm. All of a sudden I'm not feeling real warm and fuzzy about taking mine in to be fixed. Especially considering that the SA doesn't think they've ever done one before.

Time will tell. The black sealant is the new stuff they put on. Some people have up to 25,000 miles on it with no issues. I want everything documented and taken care at the dealership under warranty. If things keep happening, at least Toyota corporation has paper trail.

No matter what, it's leaking. Issue gotta be addressed.

here is what it says on the service history:

~SEAL SPLIT AT EACH CAMSHAFT TOWER AND SEEPAGE FROM TIMING COVER ~|~REMOVED FRONT TIMING COVER AND BOTH CAMSHAFT TOWERS AND REPLACED ALL GASKET AND SEALS AS REQUIRED 3 DAY FREE CAR RENTAL

Well, mine went in this morning to be "officially" diagnosed with the cam tower and timing cover leaks. My comfort level went up a little after talking to the tech, he's done several of them. So, keeping my fingers crossed. At 56,100, as long as theyre that deep in it I'm thinking I'll have them change the plugs and serp belt. Any thoughts?

you can still wait on those. Take care of the warranty stuff first .Get it documented. Drive it a lot after that to flush any potential issues then hopefully keep the truck for many years after that.

Will keep updating this thread when I have couple more thousand miles on it.

I just got mine back from the dealer, cam tower and timing cover leaks are confirmed and it's scheduled for repair on the 25th. I couldn't talk them into giving me an '18 Tundra to drive for the three days though lol. I am going to have them do new plugs and belt while everything is torn apart.

    Need Direction ;
I bought a certified used 2012 Platinum Tundra with 32k miles and 2 years later with regular maintenance and your cam seal leak with head gaskets changed by the dealer, I have found a very hard rod knock, flutter from the engine. I took my truck back to the dealership to have the oil and filter changed with 114.8k miles on it at this time and was told I will need to replace the engine. I believe something isn't smelling right. Does anyone know any issues with the connection of the cam seal leak and the rod ready to blow ?

can you confirm the sealant color used to repair or take a picture ? so you had the "fix" for about 90,000 miles already ?

the repair was done at the 72k mark, while I was in for a normal oil and filter change they found water pump leaking - replaced, cam carrier leaking - replaced 1 cylinder head gasket, 4 camshaft bearing gasket, 2 manifold gasket, 2 water outlet gasket, 1 cylinder head gasket, 2 fipg oil pan, 1 type t oil seal, 1 water inlet gasket, 2 camshaft bearing gasket, o rings. I had no problems that I had recognized until lately. regular oil changes on time, no truck doggin. heavy highway miles. I am at 115.8k miles mark now. The truck still runs strong but the flutter, knock, ping is getting worse.

I doubt it's related to the cam leak fix. You have been driving 40K miles since they fix it. Could it be a bad batch of gasoline ? is it recent issue ?

Try some Lucas Upper Cylinder Treatment. It works in most cases. Gets rid of my cold weather startup knock ping. Used it in my 09 Taco when I was up in AK too.

I add the Lucas UC treatment with every gas fill up and MotorKote in the crank case with every oil change.

I bought an extended warranty when I bought my Tundra three years ago. Never needed it. It's a matter of comfort level. I could bought a lot of goodies for my truck. Was a full warranty. Covered pretty much everything. $2500. Would I do it again? Not too sure about that now. Maybe better to save the money for a rainy day. Then use it if something breaks.

My warranty was with Zurich. Very good but very pricey. Zurich has different levels of coverages. I went for the top coverage. You can shop around. Maybe others can chime in with their aftermarket warranty experiences.
