Want to learn how to properly lube the drive shaft in my Tundra

So no needle type required? I guess I could just try them all myself before trying to source one...

 

For me, no. I can just squeeze it in there. If you have a fatter nozzle on your gun, there are a couple that may give you some grief. They definitely takes some strong fingers on a few of them.

 

Someone on here gave the tip about removing the heat shield for the front driveshaft ones. Great advice!

Alright I’ll be the retard - My last 3 trucks I’ve had since 95’ (1 chev and 2 Ford’s) and I’ve never greased a drive shaft. Is Toyota the only one requiring this ?

 

What's the interval to lubricate the driveshaft? I think the Toyota maintenance schedule is saying every 15,000 miles but the Tundras.com schedule says 5,000 miles.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if some of your old trucks had grease fittings on the the prop shafts.

 

They may very well have had them, just wasn't aware of that being a maintenance item and I've always done my own basic maintenance. I will admit I never read the manual on every item that needed maintenance. I just paid attention to the obvious things that needed it.

Well, I see you have a '21 Tundra? If so, I think your u-joints on the prop shaft are probably sealed.

I just got my '21 Tundra a few weeks ago, haven't even checked yet to see if there are grease fittings on the u-joints, but I doubt there are as my '18 Tundra didn't have them.

 

So from reading this the 18 - 21 have a sealed driveshaft. Are there any lube points at all or is everything now sealed?

Just looked under mine, no zerks! Bad thing is I already bought a grease gun and grease but no where to put it ... Guess I'll just lube my '13 tacoma and wife's Malibu.

 

My old 97 Chev 1500 had sealed u-joints. That's why they had to be replaced, lol. Sealed is a terrible way to go. More $$$ for the dealer.

 

Hey so I was able to grease my 4x4 on all but one point.. The rear front driveshaft (One attached to the transfer case) zerk fitting was at an angle that my grease fitting was not fitting in. So I had a needle as many recommended to use that for that. Using that did'nt work either. Even putting the needle into the front (back) fitting the grease was pretty much not getting into the joint.

Any advise as to how to get the front back zerk efficiently ?? is there a way to remove the cross member maybe? confused and needed advise....thanks

if it’s the same one I’m thinking it is, there’s a small heat shield you can remove to get at that zerk. It’s 2 bolts I think. Learned that from another member on here.

 

I get that one by rotating the shaft to point the zerk up and toward the driver’s side, then get straight on it with a long grease hose on the gun. You’re working by feel, but it’s not bad.

 

you can always grind the grease gun fitting to make it slimmer. It would definitely have made things easier on my 4runner's driveshaft. I was able to squeeze it in there though. Having another person around to squeeze the gun while you hold the hose onto the zerk helps greatly. Listen for air and watch for grease oozing out or you will make a mess. My rear ujoint basically shattered cause I didn't grease them for over 15 years. Pain to replace... So yeah I would say that it is important.

 

Thread necromancy - does this require removal of cat shields to do? Cause if so, it's gonna wait until my next transfer case fluid change.

 

I have just recently installed my cat shields, it is pretty hard or impossible to access the second front zerk fitting. If you’re planning to install cat shields lube everything prior and perhaps think about changing fluids as well.

 

I use this stuff in my JBas. Would that work for the driveshaft as well ?

I assume I have to take apart my drive shaft to grease the slip yolk? I have a 2014 crew max 4x4

 

Just crawled under my 2021, didn't see a single zerk. Assuming the 2020+ are sealed or am I blind?

 

Same here. I had the same reaction after picking up a ‘21 a couple months ago.

My 2016 Tundra had Zerks… and a transmission cooler, too, lol.

 

So am I good on my 19’? Realized I’ve never greased anything and freaked out. Then saw I have no zerks. What about the propeller shaft? Anyone have a diagram on that?

 

Don't believe the 19's have grease fittings on the propeller shaft. If you did, look at all 4 out sides of the U joint, they would be there with a fitting going into the U joint cap
