Anyone running 17" rims on your 2.5 gen?

Sorry guys if this have been answered million time but looking for quick assurance here as well. Bought my truck about 4 yrs ago and it come with some lift that looks like basic 2" nothing fancy just a block that is 2" tall in rear spring and about same tall spacer on front strut. Shocks are stock since I install new takeoffs to replace the original one that were slightly rusty. The wheels are 20" Fuel wheel with 305/50 R20 Terra Grappler. Based on reading through this post and looking the pictures it also looks like the wheels have 0 offset the way they poke out.

Bottom line I never really like the look of the tire as the side wall seem way to skinny and I rather want more meat. This setup currently have very small rub on the frame driver side, but only under certain condition and full lock. Truck is also equipped with Iron Cross front bumper

Anyway the time is finally here the tires are done and I was thinking rather than just buy tires to switch the setup completely. I do like the 17" look with taller tire wall and I do like METHOD wheels just not sure what is right for my setup to avoid rubbing.


Based on this post I have these two on mind but dont know the outcome

17x8.5 - 0mm Offset on 295/70/17
- Will this poke more than what I have now?
- Will this rub?

17x8.5 +25mm Offset. 285/75/17
- Will this look too flush since fender flares are installed?
- Will this rub due to its tall side wall?

or


18x9 +18 wheels with 285/65R18
18x9 +12 wheels with 275/70R18

+25 to +35 is the safest.

17x8.5 +25 Offset
305/70 17 (height same as 285/75 17 but 0.8in wider) With EAG slimline fender flares

 

Anything larger than 17” wheel makes you a “bro” in my book. . 17 is best. Especially wrapped with 35’s. I love my bro’s. But bro, 18” and larger just ain’t the move. Less tire and more bling. Better to have more tire

 

I love my Wildpeaks. I run the 10 ply E rated version and suggest that if you're towing. They are amazing in the snow. I have never had concerns about traction from commuting to even a foot of snow off road (aired down @20 psi). People run 295/70/18's (about a 34" tire) on stock setups with only removing the front mudflap. So i imagine 255/80/17 should be fine, that's not a huge tire.

 

I t looks like those Fuel wheels are + offset; not sure how many mm's. I would opt for Method 701 or 703 (0 offset) and 285/75/17 AT tires or go 35's. The 285s will probably require a little front wheel well plastic trim or need to be pushed in (easy and you can find threads in this site). The 35s will probably require a CMC and as well as front fender liner "mod". Perhaps down the road delete the spacer lift and upgrade suspension. Bilstein 6112/5160s are a good option.

Sounds like a good plan. Maybe get some coin from selling those Fuels & Nittos to offset something.

Finally got new wheels and tires, thought I would share to help others out (and because it’s sexy!)

Went from TRD OEM Black wheels with +60 offset and 265/70/18 Nitto grapplers to 17” Method Bronze 703’s. New tires are the Falken AT4W’s with 3-ply sidewall.

Best part is that I was able to go up in tire size and because of the offset on the new wheels the 285/75/17 (34”x11”) Falkens fit on factory suspension, no lift. Guys at the tire shop weren’t sure but based off a bunch of research here I thought the +25 to+35 offset on wheels would be perfect, that really is the sweet spot. These Methods have +36 offset and are JUUUST right, a little poke, no rubbing and should still tuck up in the wheel well on trails when flexing.

Bigger tires seem to have given me 1.5-2” extra lift per fender measurements from the ground, before and after.

I’ll be doing a suspension lift as well, leaning towards the Eibach 2R front and back and maybe a RAS on the back too but super pleased!

AT4-W’s are noticeably better in the snow than my worn down Nittos, no big surprise there.

 

Wheels are in they look better in person than on the picture , tires will be here today as well must be on different truck. If all goes well I might install them this Saturday.

I will make more pics after work I will be putting 305/70 on those so we will see if 2" lift will clear out if not well then I have reason to go suspension but they should clear my current wheels are 305/50 but the wheels are -18 and they fit and only rub in one single tiny spot on frame will report once they done

After watching this video, I'm not too worried about the skinny "pizza cutters" not performing, they actually have some good benefits. Skinnier tires are easier to fit and don't give up performance off-road. Also lighter so for me as a daily driver on my Tundra with occassional off-roading I'll take performance and fit over the super wide look.

-18 offset? and you're touching the frame? I would have thought that much offset would have issues with things like bumper and body mount, not the frame.

 

I don't think 285 is considered a skinny tire, I mean the truck came with a 275 stock. The video above is a good watch, but the skinny tire in that video is a 255 for comparison.

 

Yeah, not skinny compared to a 255 obviously but it's all relative. Most guys in a Tundra for offroading seem to want to get to about a 35" diameter for ground clearance, and I have not seen many that are as skinny as the 255" in the video. 285/75/17 at 11.2" wide is about an inch and a half more narrow than the alternative common size these come in, a 315/70/17, which is about 12.5" wide and only gives an additional .6" in height. That extra 1.5" in width can make the difference for rubbing obviously but doesn't give extra performance in most scenarios from what I'm hearing. I'm not an expert on wheeling and common tire size though.

I suppose the one I chose is right in the middle for width to height compared to the two tires in the video so just like in the group shower...average.

 

Yep the current wheels 20x10 -18 and 305/50 barely touching the frame (bought this car wit it) + 2" basic lift (spacers). Car also already had aftermarket front bumper so there was never issue really. This is the only rub I have now at full lock so the new setup should fit as well

yes still new to all the terms I guess they call it here BMC mode... in my case trying to avoid any chopping, I can do many things but welding is not one of them and after I got married and new job got out of the car scene and lost all the contacts that I had...

 

same here, I want to actually keep my mud flaps, hate slinging stuff up the side of the truck.

 

Looks great! How close are you to the body mount? I've got the same wheels ordered but looking at the 315/70r17 tire size. Everything I've seen shows with a +35mm wheel, I can run this tire size with no BMC. While it doesn't really affect fitment, I do already have the Eibach 2R kit set at a 2.5" lift.

 

What a pain in the butt got to my friend shop first we realized the wheels I had on my car had this stupid TPMS senors that look aftermarket so I had to run and buy universal valve stems and had to use bit of superglue as I was not convinced they will stay "click" on the stem as the advertisement said. Going to buy OEM if these will cause me any trouble down the road. Then we had trouble to find right adapter for tire balance machine and lastly aliment rack was not working something about the targets, the rack was not able to find them so I will have to swing by other time once we figured out what was wrong with the rack :-(

BTW: this is Mercedes dealer they dont have cheap stuff but I guess not prepared for big ass hub bore wheels, Anyway here is the result and I love the look.

No rub anywhere and tires are almost even with the flares maybe ever slightly poking out.

 

Just a quick question for anyone that deal with this before. I bought 4 brand new OEM TPMS Sensors that I will eventually slide in and was wondering if Techstream is capable register those to my truck as long as I know the serial number. I will try tomorrow to see If I can connect with my Truck and dig around the program its been a while I used it. Last time I did some minor changes to my GX470 and I know I was able to pin point what TPMS was bad but not sure if I can also manually enter them.


UPDATE: So had time to play with Tech Stream again and yes its possible to program TPMS sensors manually as long as you have serial numbers in your hand. Did the second sets for my GX470 under 2nd Set Tires setting so once I swap the sensor the only thing I need to do is press the button under the steering wheel for 2nd set. Will do the same for the Tundra once the 2nd sets arrive.

 

Did those 17’s clear the caliper with that +12 offset?

 

Yes and NO I shot 1/2oz set on one front wheel on my way home they were too tall so I bought low profile 1/4oz in AutoZone and based on the sticker match what was there originally. I might get another sets form Amazon of low profile 1/2oz later and maybe replace the 1/4oz. I just didn't had time and need it something now since my wheel were off. The trick is that those weights cannot be more than 3mm tall.Hope this info help...

Note: Only apply for INSIDE placement. Outside clear as long as you place them as close to the outside.
