I have a 2019 SR5 that I added some bumper caps to and noticed some extra connections in the bumpers. I’m assuming they are for blind spot monitoring sensors?? Can I just add the sensors and get that feature? I see the option in my dashboard settings but I’m not able to turn it on.

The ones on the bumper are for parking, not blindspot i believe.

Any idea what the extra cables are for? My parking sensors are installed and working fine so it’s not those.

    Yeah we need photos.

I just removed my front end today on my 1794 and there is no extra cables. Only ones are for the fog lights and for the parking sensors.

    How did you notice them?

The small circles you can see on your bumper are parking sensors the blind spot monitor sensor is not visible from outside you have to crawl underneath your truck and it’s on the very corners of your bumpers and like a square shape

I deleted my post because for some reason I thought he meant the front bumper caps.
OP never did specify the front..:D

@elembemedia did they look like this?
Those are the BSM sensor connectors.

    upload_2025-3-8_22-55-8.png

    upload_2025-3-8_22-53-16.pngupload_2025-3-8_22-54-3.png

And no, you can't just add them to make BSM work.
But with a lot of work and the right parts you can make them work.
Check out post 310 in this thread.

RainMan's 2021 Lunar Rock TRD Pro Build | Page 11 | Toyota Tundra Forum

New sensors run around $1K each but can be found cheaper on eBay.
Sensor Blind Spot M 88162-0C051 | Sparks Parts

You would also need to replace your mirror glass that have BSM indicators.

RainMan put in tons of work to add BSM to his truck. Mine while I just turned it off and pulled the sensors, brackets, etc out on my Platinum.....the duality of man lol

I’ve never been a huge bsm fan on any of the rigs I’ve owned but I enjoy it on my second gen since the a and b pillars cause pretty big blind spots but ironically I ordered a high clearance rear bumper so I too shall sadly lose function of them soon

I literally turned BSM off when I was driving home from the dealership after buying the truck brand new back in 2020. Left it off until I installed a rear bumper a few months ago. Ended up ditching BSM and the parking sensors. I made some weather tight caps using the plugs that mate to the connectors on the truck and its like the system was never there.

I don't mind BSM on some vehicles, but for reasons I cannot comprehend Toyota decided that turning on BSM should turn on an orange light on the dash to tell me its "on". This drives me nuts, because A) its pointless to have the light and B) On every previous vehicle I have had an orange light indicates a problem, not something working like it should

that’s odd when my bsm turns on there is no orange light or another other odd light on my dash just on the mirrors same for ever other Toyota truck I’ve owned with bsm

I too never use the parking sonar kinda a dumb feature

Maybe it was green? Honestly cant remember. I know they made minor changes like that through out the years. Regardless, between the light and the beeping in traffic it was more annoying than useful for me.

Mine is also turned off due to tow mirror install without BSM indicators. Now if someone could just mod up a harness, and sail panels with indicators...

I added BSM with Rainman’s tutorial. It wasn’t hard.

    I like it, so…..

I was reading through his setup and realized it won't work on my truck with the chrome bumper caps... So still not sure what the extra cabling is for because I do have the mirrors with the BSM indicators.

I mean that’s where the BSM sensors would install, there’s brackets the sensors attach/install to at that location and those look like the right connectors. If your truck has the BSM mirrors, my only thought is that someone swapped bumper caps for chrome and sold the sensors.
Apologies for the thread jack, but anybody interested in selling their sensors/brackets? Looking to add it to my ‘21 SR5 for when the wife’s driving as her car has bsm and she’s used to it now, and before anybody jumps in, yes she still turns her head to confirm but she likes the extra notice if somebody sneaks up. I got a set of mirrors of FB and can get the connectors etc. from Corsa Technic using @RainMan_PNW’s post, last pieces of the puzzle are the sensors/brackets.

Are you sure you have BSM indicators in your mirrors?
It doesn't make sense to have them when your truck doesn't have the sensors and switch.

My guess is the prior owner had a fender bender. It was cheaper to replace the bumper with chrome and it didn't have the brackets so the prior owner left them un-installed?

Hmmm, I don't get any dash lights with BSM on: 2014 1794. The switch on the lower left is backlit and the icon in the mirrors lights up if an object is in its path. No beeping either.

Was that an update later in production?

    Tastefully enhanced...
Same for me when driving...mirrors light up...but when I take it out of Park (reverse or Drive) at say, a shopping center, it does beep before I even let off of the brake...makes me turn around and look...the cars are typically further away than I anticipate, too...

Not sure how I missed being tagged in this thread.
Those are BSM connectors, but those are not held in place using factory zip ties.
If you have BSM mirrors in place as well, then my bet is that previous owner swapped the rear bumper out…either due to a fender bender as Gtboosted suggested or because they really liked chrome. In the 18+ trucks it wasn’t an option for there to be parking sonar without BSM - they used the same harness for both in the rear bumper.

The instrument cluster change in 2018 deleted the physical button and moved it into the settings in the cluster.

When turned on, it shows two green lights - BSM and RCTA in the lower part of the speedo dial to let you know the system is on and operating correctly. They are down in the same area as the green light showing my headlights are on, my fog lights are on, and the Auto High-beam is on (when it is).
I prefer that over my wife’s Subaru, which has a constant orange light telling her that her lane departure is OFF all the time (since we both leave that turned off all the time in both of our rigs).

And yes, I still use my mirrors and head check.

So it sounds like other than the chrome bumper covers I would just need to get the sensor and mount them?

The rear bumpers are a bit more involved than simply swapping covers if I recall correctly. I think the framing is different somehow. And there is an additional mounting bracket for the sensor inside of the bumper framing as well.

The first post in this thread outlines the parts needed to swap to colored rear bumper ends (it’s down a ways)
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/ultimate-oem-toyota-parts-thread-for-2nd-gens-2007-21.10707/
the links might no longer work but you can see the Toyota part number in the text of each link

then you’ll need to review the info in the post in my build thread ) linked earlier in this thread) for details on the mounting bracket part number, sensors, and associated nuts/misc parts.

But yes, it certainly sounds like you could get them writing without having to run so the extra wiring and swapping mirrors and all that.

Just gotta mount a small LED in the sail panel and tap it into two wires at that connector. I’ve seen a few people on here do just that.

It is critical to note that the 18-21 BSM sensors are not the same as the 14-17 ones. They mount in a different orientation and use a different connector. That is why you need the extra mounting bracket in addition to the parts shown for the bumper end swap.

Had seen the same. It's the tapping of wires I don't want to do. I'm the fella who's willing to pay $$$ for a harness vs cutting/tapping wires.

    Gotcha.
    And it makes sense.
There would be room in there to make a small jumper harness between the mirror and the connector for it.
