Thanks. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Does make some sense. I've switched over the years from Toyota/ Idemitsu/ valvoline and now dex3.

I've read that as well, so I did that before my full IPT transmission install, only I used VFTuner. When I mentioned what I had done to John (IPT), he said that they really don't do that as a matter of course. They prefer to wait to see how the new transmission behaves first, then if there are anomalies, they may suggest a learned values reset. FWTW...

Haven't looked into tech stream hardly- is this something we can download to a pc etc? What's the field to reset? I'm now thinking of running ws until the valve body swap happens no sense in wasting the dex I have.

You shouldn't EXPECT whine with gears, and you certainly shouldn't accept more than double the spec just because some gears whine when setup perfectly.

I am seriously considering a supercharger for my LX570, and was pretty set on the Harrop, but with the news that the Gen 6 Whipple might be on the way, what are thoughts of using the Whipple instead? I think the whipple should work other than needing to get a custom tune.

My primary use case would be for towing a 5500 lb travel trailer in the Rocky Mountains, I live at 6500'. Not looking for big power, just to get back the 20% power loss from being at 6500'(and then some) in the most efficient way possible. I wanna keep IAT's low when pulling grades at higher temperatures.

Why would they even call to tell you it's at 15. They should call if it's within spec or a hair out.

"Hey how's it going, we suck at our job and were wondering if that's okay with you"

This is it. Lol 4.88 nitros in the old man’s rig zero whine. There should be zero noise excepted.

They all should have a custom tune done as the tunes included leave much to be desired. Still no word from our Whipple contact so I wouldn’t hold your breath for the gen6 just yet. If it was confirmed it’d be in my kitchen already.

Can't go wrong with any of them. I would think the Whipple would be good from the potential to overdrive it more than most superchargers (though I haven't looked into that specifically, but since they have massive pulleys would make sense) and that's what you'll need to get the power back.

Have you looked at the turbocharger option from Turbokits too?

The problem with turbos is they are usually pretty low efficiency at low boost. Like <60%. The compressor maps I have seen for the TVS2650 seem to be in the 68-70% range at 1.25 PR right up to 55 lb/min.

Not that I would be creating much heat at that low of boost, but still, at 1.25PR and 60% efficiency you are still looking at a 161F compressor outlet temp on a hot day with no intercooling.

So shim it to 6. Gears shouldn’t whine. Mine don’t in either my blazer or tundra. 4.88’s and 5.29’s respectively.

I’ll be up at that altitude next week. I’ll let you know how the turbo does but I’m not expecting any issues. Turbos like load so towing puts a load on and they’ll come online quick. I don’t know if @bflooks towed at that elevation but he did a lot of testing while towing. Maybe he could offer some insight.

@bflooks towed throughout the hills of Franconia Notch and surrounding areas. Didn't have any issues pulling his trailer. He's a fellow Mass peep.

That would be sweet. Im sure the turbos work but at the 3-5 psi range I would be running in, I am not sure it would be the ideal solution.

I don't think the turbo kit wouldn't work, I am just not convinced its the best solution for my use case. If I was going for power and was planning on running 7+ PSI then sure.

I just want the 5.7L to not feel like its always maxed out and needing to downshift. If I am towing along at 2800 rpm, a mosquito could fart and it has to drop a gear. My old F150 Ecoboost could pull in 5th gear at 2200 rpm and still had a decent amount of power in reserve for headwinds or a small hill. One downshift to 4th at 3000 rpm and it could pull all but the steepest hills.

Then blower and let her chew! If you're ever down south you're welcome to take my truck for a rip for comparisons sake, though obviously it's pretty apples to oranges.

The biggest issue with Whipple imo is they've had QC issues so far, and seem to take excruciating long to deliver anything, even current stuff. There's two people that have messaged me from like 8+ months ago somehow waiting on Whipple's. Maybe after the issues with the current Whipple and the Gen 6 coming out they paused production, but I would have a hard time waiting very long when there's other options on the market ready to go, and they'll all do what you want. If you're a few months out then play it by ear so you can get the new shiny blower, if you want to throw cash tomorrow then send it with the Harrop and dont look back.

I remember we discussed this before. The Whipple has larger displacement of course which is nice, but is limited to a hard ceiling of 18k rpm. If the plan is to overdrive the blower I’d just look at the big picture in that regard. Here was a post I made about it prior with more detailed information. https://www.tundras.com/threads/general-supercharger-thread.85513/page-593#post-3682192

Don't shims come with the gear kits? And don't most shops who do this work have shims they can use? Make sure they shum it to spec or closer so you're not pissed!

    They're noobs

And if they're anything like the place I took my tundra to, are absolutely incompetent when it comes to an IFS diff and don't want to keep taking it apart since they can't figure out how to it set it up.

Gears aren't something you run and then pull out and reshim and redo. It's not hard but it does take knowledge on how to do it right. It's a lot of install, measure, adjust. They need to set it up right the first time.

Gear it. The transmission gearing in these trucks is to tall and so they compensate with 4.30's in the rear but that's not enough. I'm running 5.29's and am about to drop from 34 to 33 just to better help the gearing situation out. I was a little shocked at how much my tundra seemed to struggle towing my rzr as compared to my silverado. Where the silverado just casually loped along in 5th gear even with 34's, the tundra had to be in 4th. Added the 5.29's and now the tundra can run in 5th just fine.

Turbos don't necessarily need to be in boost to help add power. They can sit at 0psi and just that can be enough to help it out.

Either way, forced induction is a key ingredient to successful towing capabilities.

Yes, the 6 speed gearing is pretty atrocious but my LX has the 8 speed that has much better gearing, and is basically the same as the the domestic truck's 8 and 10 speed. Even regearing to 3.91's would be more than enough to compensate for 37's and would still put my gear ratios shorter than a Tundra with 5.29's.

I may go to 3.91's at some point, just havent gotten there yet.
