A narrower axle in the rear is supposed to help with the turning radius. That being said, every time i’ve built or have had built custom axles, i’ve made the front and rears the same length. I’ve always preferred a bit wider.

We'll see what they look like w/o, and if I need I can get some 3/4" spacers to get it back to where it is now.

Just a thought on the parking brake. I blew a hard line in moab once and had to use my e-brake to limp off the trail. I was very glad to have a mechanical backup that day.

Most disc brake’d conversion E brakes suck bad enough that they’re only good on flat ground…if there’s no wind. I’ve lost a brake line a few times over the years while out wheeling. The quick fix was to hammer the metal hardline completely flat (with a hammer, wrench, jack handle, rock), fold it over itself two or three times (each time hammering it flat again), and carry on for the remainder of the trip with 3 brakes. Keep the speeds down though. Coming in hot at 55mph into a 35mph corner while applying the brakes will make a jeep cj7 take up all 3 lanes on a 2 lane road.

I was at the Easter Jeep Safari many years ago in Moab. I rolled my CJ7 (different CJ than the one above) in Devil’s Hot Tub. The rollcage partially collapsed and the steering wheel broke completely off the column. Like there was not even any spokes left to grab, and what was left to grab was very sharp stainless steel (yes i tried, but it wasn’t possible to use vise grips as a steering rudder). I ended up having to drive the rest of the way out of the Hell’s Revenge trail and an additional 30 minutes back on the highway to get back into town. I wore a leather glove so my hand didn’t get sliced open from the sharp metal, and had to literally palm my hand where the small circular horn pad used to be. I pretty much had a 3” diameter steering wheel to steer with. It was sketchy as all get out and the pucker factor was very high. Hell’s Revenge trail is no joke, and even less of a joke one handed with no steering wheel!

When i swapped a junkyard sequoia 4.10 3rd members into my tundra, i didn’t have to swap the pinion flanges. That being said, i sold my existing tundra 3.90 3rd member to a random guy on craigslist, and he ended up having to swap his drive flange onto the 3rd member that he had just bought from me.

This here exactly. In addition, the 8" elocker uses smaller 10mm studs, while the 8.4" uses larger 12mm studs if memory serves right. Regardless, the 8.4 has a larger mounting footprint, and is stronger with the bridged carrier caps and larger bearings, gears and carrier. To get an 8" in, you'd be looking at a custom housing which I think negates the entire idea. Not worth the money or time involved.

Exactly. I did a Harrop way back when they first came over to the US. Cruiser Brothers, the company I bought it though, was originally the only company importing them at that time, and they gave me a discount on the locker in exchange for photos for advertising. According to them, I got the first Harrop in the US. I can't find the ad they used my truck in anymore unfortunately. I love mine though, never had an issue with it.

75 and sunny today, a great day for @bmf4069 and I to get this project kicked off.

Todays plan is to get Ironman cleaned up and stripped to a bare rear frame.

    -Measure pinion angle
    -remove rear bumper
    -Remove bed
    -drop spare tire
    -Pressure wash
    -remove axle/springs/shocks
-remove brake lines to LSPV and LSPV
    -tack in temporary x member
    -remove factory spare tire crossmember

    Should look something like this

    LETS GO!

SUrgery started today with @JakeJake and Dale. Everything went smooth as butter, thanks to Jake. Having done this before and having a shop with a forklift, pressure washer, and air compressor helped a shit load. I think start to finish was maybe 2-2 1/2 hours. I've done what I can; the rest is in Jake's hands. PICTURE TIME!
