wheel-to-wheel running boards for 2023 crewmax + 6.5 long bed?

Curious what option y’all ended up going with. I’m researching options now for my CrewMax Long Bed overland/camping build. I’d like something that goes wheel to wheel, but I don’t see any manufacturers offering that. Currently looking at the options from RCI and CBI as those seem to be the only ones that even list that they fit the CMLB.

 

These are pretty much the same as the ones for the 5.5' bed. Get them to show you a picture of their 6.5' bed option and you will see that they stop at the cab. The CBI ones did when I looked at them. If you are looking for wheel to wheel boards you might have to make them yourself. I made some and they worked great. Not good for sliding off boulders but good for keeping flying rocks off the side of the truck. It was nice to have the step to reach into the bed or uptop to reach the kayaks.

 

Due to the lack of options, I have not invested top $ for something that doesn’t fit all my needs.

I fear that not protecting wheel-2-wheel could guide your truck off the slider and directly onto the rocker panel. In addition, I wanted the extra step to be able to reach up to my bed rack/rtt.

I wonder why CBI offers the sliders for our model (CM/LB) without being full length…

 

I would call CBI and see if they can confirm the length, maybe it has changed since I checked.

This is what I put together on my Tundra. The kayaks sit on top of the tent when closed. Bikes can stay up there except when the kayaks are loaded or unloaded. The bikes also provide a bit of protection if a critter wanted to pay a visit and climb into the side of the tent

These were solid, I could jump on them all day long and they didn't move. We made the board section out of Stainless Steel material and the 5 mounts out of steel and had it all powder-coated. The supports were showing some rust after 1 year but the boards were perfect except for the shoe marks.

If you are more concerned about a step and not as concerned about rock slider protection, you can add Amp Research BedStep 2 retractable steps in that location. Note the 2 that designates it for front of the rear wheel installation. There is another thread on those in this forum.

I had a generous offer from PBNB, but it ended up being more money than I could spend.

But I waited and almost got exactly what I wanted.

AMP makes a bedstep, that works on the rear bumper - driver side only.
They also have a bedstep2, for the side, which originally was NOT available for the 3rd gen tundras.
But now they do, for both sides. It's a couple of inches lower than I would prefer, but it works.
And I paired them with the Go Rihno Dominator D1 Side Steps

That looks like a good solution to get into the bed. Sort of like what GM has done with the integrated steps.

 

It's not exactly what I wanted, but it does the job, and for less money than another of the other options.

Now I am day dreaming about a bed slide/drawer. DIY (putting a pause on expensive parts). Actually, I should make another post....

 

I would really love a full length slider. Even a full length running board would be better than the predator steps. Wild that no one is making anything.... Are the 6.5' beds really that rare?

 

I think the lack of longer boards is due to the lack of body mounts. Adding an extra foot to the boards would need a mount to carry that extra length. Something can be made but there are many different manufacturers making boards and having the same mounts for all the crewmax trucks makes it easy for these shops to build and sell if they are all the same.

 

Exactly. I agree with PBNB. The real 'problem' isn't that the 6.5's are rare, it's that there is no structure behind the bed panel in between the cab and the rear wheel. While most boards attach to the rocker panel along the cab, there is just an empty body panel on the extended bed portion. The bedstep2 that I used attaches to the frame, further back, in several places.

Every manufacturer I spoke with kept saying that they don't have a modification for the long bed 'yet,' implying that if the 3rd gen models remained consistent long enough, that they would likely build one out. Even makers of rock sliders, which are stronger and would be way easier to extend that extra foot and remain strong, don't have models that do so.

Which leads to the rarity part. The manufacturers likely need more people to be asking for it, so that they deem it worth the expense.
