I’m not well versed in radio, but I’m guessing that’s the connector for all the components? Which it is different than the other.
I should say, same connector, but different pinout.
Some of the components and feature are different. No GPS, different mic size, no wire for speed sensor and different setup for steering wheel controls.

I can now confirm that l was able to use the Axxess device to maintain my steering wheel controls and so far I’m really happy with the alpine 407. I was able to use the wiring I had from my previous ready harness and have it hooked up and working great.

Something I've been running into...I'm assuming the problem is the head unit, not the backup camera, but I don't know how to verify. On my screen, I can choose to reverse the camera image. I'm sure there's a purpose for this, but for me it's no good.

The iss is that mine switches on me. I'll have the camera, in the head unit settings, set to "normal", and it'll be normal. But then another time I start the truck and back up, the image will be reversed. I got into settings, it still says "normal". If I switch it to "reverse", it will actually be correct, not reversed.

Then some other time, I'll start the truck, put it in reverse, and it will be back to reverse-image. So the image can be normal or mirrored, whether the setting is on "reverse" or "normal". Whichever image shows up on the camera, changing the setting will switch the image. But sometimes "reverse" is a normal image, sometimes "reverse" is actually a reversed image. What's happening here?

It's hard for my brain to get used to one or the other when they keep switching. Sometimes left is left, but other times left is right...

It's hard to google search, because at least on my Sony head unit, they use "reverse" to indicate a mirrored image. You can image searching backup cameras and the word "reverse" mostly brings up the fact that cameras come on when you put the truck in reverse...Hard to find search terms that actually get to my problem.

I did install the latest software update, and that didn't change anything. Still feels completely random which image I'll get. I have not spent enough time to verify whether it only switches on me after turning the truck off, or if it also switches during a trip without turning the truck off.

Reversing the camera image is useful when you install a backup cam in the front of your car, you can reverse the backup cam image to the correct orientation for facing forward.

Are you certain you connected the video cable of your backup cam to the backup cam input on the headunit and not the front cam input perhaps?

Most half-worth-shit cameras come with a wire loop or two, one of which you can cut to reverse the image from whatever the camera outputs. More info in the installation instructions I provided over here, see the 3rd image specifically and read its associated text.

Is the first picture the place I need to be looking for those three wires/tees? My truck came with all this installed, so I don't know how it was done or exactly where the wiring is. Obviously I'll start tracing wires. I just want to make sure I know what I'm looking for. I've already found the camera wire under the truck when I was replacing towing package wiring, but I don't know where things are once they get into the cab yet.

I'll definitely look in there to see what's what, and maybe something will jump out at me. Just strange that it constantly flips on me. I can have it set to "normal" and it might be normal or it might be reversed, and will change over time. I can have it set to "reverse" and it might be reverse or it might be normal, and will change. But I know things get weird when they aren't wired correctly.

Is the headunit newer; did you replace it after you bought the truck? I'm wondering if the camera is outdated, or as @shifty` indicated there might be one of those "reverse image" wires that is causing problems. See if you can identify the camera brand, model, etc. and look for those wires where the camera is connected to power (probably in the back).

Head unit and camera came with the truck. Head appears to be fairly old. Sony doesn't offer it anymore. No idea on the camera. I'll check things out. Thanks.

    Backup cameras I've installed, typically:
    • Have the camera on a 'tailpiece' of some sort (modular connector on one end, camera on the other end), so if the camera dies, you just replace the last few feet of cord with the camera
    • Usually have the looped wires you'll want to cut for modifications somewhere on that tailpiece, on mine I believe it was within inches of the the modular connector end
    • I'd start hunting from the rear of the camera, up to the modular (typically round) connector
    • It can vary from vendor to vendor, you may need to look on the stereo end also, but most companies don't want to waste money on sending those wires all the way to the head unit
Here are some pictures showing a few different cams from the camera to the modular connector, and highlighting the wire loops with a red arrow.

    Awesome, thank you.

Mine is the license plate frame type, sort of like the last photo. I'm about to head out for the 4th but I'll be crawling around under my truck looking for the wiring on Sunday.

In case it's remotely interesting to anyone that went with the Alpine in W650 or W670 format and is disappointed by the lack of wireless CarPlay, it appears Alpine finally put out the W770 HERE, which adds an additional camera port, and wireless AA/CarPlay. It would appear it has all the updates/upgrades the W670 came with when it replaced the 650 (13-band EQ, etc.)

While I'm not sure if it warrants the added pricetag, I will say, a number of the USB CarPlay modules you can plug into your radio's USB port to get wireless CarPlay run in the $99-129 range (for name brands), so ... maybe it's worth it? I have one of the USB modules, and the lag associated with it really sucks.

This might be the one for me, I was looking at the different Sony ones and thought of this , or a Kenwood eXcelon. I'm even open to a floating 9" screen but they're a bit too expensive. This Alpine seems to check all the boxes--especially since it has Wireless AA/Car Play and is cheaper than the others.

You can also get any radio from a Scion. It is plug and play. Here is one I put in a DC I used to have. Some also have bluetooth

I've got a similar one, made by Pioneer for Scion (/Toyota), and it even has preamp outs and stuff. But I don't need it. I bought it as a "if I buy another Toyota and I want to stay OEM, maybe for the kids' first car" and whatnot.

Interesting. I need to look at the FSE and wiring diagrams to see if this is possible on the older trucks. I would image the later AC has more in common, electrically, with the DC

Toyota has been using (generally) the same radio harnesses starting in 1987, up through the years of the 1st gen Tundras. I know with the newer touchscreens, like the one some folks use from the ~2017 GR86, there's one or two wires you need to swap in our harness to make it work. But generally speaking, many OEM Toyota radios are like the scion/Pioneer unit I bought, having two different harness options in the rear: One (or pair) of plugs for amplified system harness, another for non-amplified system harness. I think I marked up the image below correctly.

Like, this is the radio I picked up for ~$30, as shown. It's not touchscreen so not in-line with this thread, but same general year I think (2008-2012), and with the mp3/iPod support, plus RCA in, plus USB in, plus rear video monitor out (I think that's what the yellow video out is), and subwoofer/front/rear RCA out, it made for a compelling buy knowing I've got to get an older Toyota for the oldest kid to drive soon. I want them to have access to a cool system, but not necessarily have the distraction of a touchscreen.

Actually, I'm curious on the rear monitor out, I guess I should confirm that 12-pin RCA connects to the 12-pin port next to the amp harness on the rear of the radio, eh? I assumed it was reverse cam when I saw it, but where would it display output on the head unit? Hmmm....

Here is the one I will get next. Single volume knob and no cd so bigger touch screen. This one can be found in the newer Scion.

Yep, that [one in #349] scion-pioneer unit looks compelling based on cost.
Except for fitment, since it looks larger than the radio port of FGT dash panel.

If you already installed, any pics?
    AND
    Is the daytime screen visible?
And is the DIM function based on an ambient light sensor?
Presuming the sound quality was more than adequete, but w/or w/out an external amp?
Except for lack of a wireless connection, looks quite usable for many FGT owners.

No I have not even found one yet. Too many other projects going on right now. I believe most Scion radios will fit FGT but not 100% sure.

Same dimensions as the Toyota 86 radio. Fits the newer bestgen dash with the larger bezel.

    Tiny rework needed.

Sharing what was shared with me in the past. 2 pics, then 2 PDF attachments after the pics. Covers the pertinent details.

1st pic here, note the reposition on the red wire shifting 1 pin over. Basic re-pin.

I've got a 2017 radio from an 86 ready to install, but opted to stick with the Alpine, and recently updated my W650 to a W770. I guess I'll be saving the 86 radio for a future Toyota/Lexus or something.

    thx @Shifty. Very timely info.
If I had SWContols, I'd try it. Obviously 'do-able' but with necessary wire terminal mods, otherwise 'appears' to be a clean fit.

I read thru the UserManual and attached here if anyone wants to see its full spec/operation. Basically, a Pioneer 16watt @ 4ohm, but relatively up to date features, BUT, unless I read wrong, only Wireless for AA. [?]

The whole Scion radio thing looks ok. Entune blows chunks though. Do any of them support CarPlay?

Yes, but maybe not wireless. Our 2020 Highlander Hybrid has the JBL system, supports CarPlay, but only wired. Totally lame. Unusually, a little lacking in the low-end even with a powered sub in the rear driver quarter panel cubby. I think it’d benefit from a less anemic 10” or 12” back there.

I know Entune radios in some Toyotas have CarPlay capabilities. But do any of the “Scion” ones have it? Scion no longer exists, so likely a late model FRS or 86 radio? Imagine they all changed formats from double din to floating screen.
