Bmf and JakeJakes sequoia axle shenanigans

Not to throw wrenches, but according to rock auto sequoias have 30 spline axles, and tundras have 32 spline axles. I dont know, just dipped my toe into this rabbithole.

 

If that's the case, I may be keeping the sequoia diff and we can go from there. Just filed my taxes. Getting $3700 back. That should let me do a few more things.

 

I don't think that's right from what I remember. My Eaton is 30 spline.

As far as I saw the 1st gen tundra and the 1st gen sequoia diffs are interchangeable. I'll pull the sequoia diff tomorrow and drop in my spare tundra unit to make sure we don't have any square peg round hole action going on.

 

Yeah I'm going to have to study the brake systems on the abs side. You definitely don't want that pump though, all that extra wiring, different ecu etc. Wishfully thinking that we can fool all the tundra stuff to think nothing has changed in the rear, but that's a bunch of tone ring/sensor values/wiring diagrams that I haven't dug into yet.

Me? I'd just delete all that mess Im up to give it a hard effort to make it work though.

 

If it's worth anything-

I've never felt the need or been in a situation in my truck where I wished I had ABS. For some reason my truck wasn't equipped with ABS, but I've always found it super easy to modulate brake pressure and since I'm the only person that drives it 95% of the time, I frankly don't see the need for it. My vote is to rip all that crap out.

 

I’ve wanted abs in a neon srt4. Mainly because i was trying to drive it like it was rwd. Learned my lesson when i puckered a button into the seat on a road i wasnt familiar with. Havent driven a fwd car fast since.

 

My junkyard sequoia 3rd member fit perfectly in my Tundra.

 

To be on the safe side, i’d grab both the booster and MC. Plug all the ports that don’t pertain to your tundra. (it’s par for the course to swap out a disc/drum MC for a disc/disc MC when converting over to rear disc brakes). Then install an adjustable prop valve. And no rule that you have to install that valve under the tail end of the truck (if you don’t want to). I have an adjustable prop valve located under the dash on my ford highboy, and an adjustable prop valve located under the hood on my jeep cj7.

 

I’d highly recommend to grab a tape measure and fully articulate the truck to get the shock length measurements. Remove the current rear shocks, and if you don’t have an RTI ramp, put about 800 of shtuff in the bed (generators, welders, ect make great ballast) and cross the truck up in a deep ditch. Get one bumpstop smooshed tight to the frame on one side, and have the other side’s tire dangling in the air. Then take notes down on paper of the distance between the upper and lower shock mounts. Then cross up the truck once again, but have the opposite side tire in the air and make a second set of measurements.

There’s a whole ton of different length 5100 shock options. Download the options before you head out to measure your shock mount distances so that you can mull over the different lengths while you’re laying under the truck with a tape measure. Some 5100’s have different valving than others, so keep that in mind too.

And FYI, lots of the time the suspension measurement at full extension will be different if the rear axle is articulated, compared to the whole axle just hanging straight down (as in if you had jack stands under the frame rails).

Just trying to throw out some pro tips from my own personal suspension experiences.

ABS deletion is probably the ideal solution. I drove through our latest snow storm w/o it and did fine with these tires and non functional rear brakes it's easy enough to modulate the brakes to not lock them up. But, if it's easy enough to make them work, I'd be fine with that. If we can't make them work, I'm fine with that too.

Jake is making a custom rear shock mount, adding about 4" of travel. He's got a pic of his and what he's gonna do that he's can post up. That and U-bolt eliminators.

 

Great point's here on the bias/proportioning valve. Mine is underneath out back just because that's what everybody in the community had done before me. It would be very convienient to have it under the hood adjacent to the master cylinder. Although I haven't touched the thing since making a few adjustments after installing.

I drove myself nuts pulling measurements when I did my rear suspension work, but haven't ventured into articulated measurements. Archive garage has laid the groundwork here though and a ton of guys are running their extend shock mount with a 12" travel shock with good performance.

I cant find anything within Billstein's data that suggests the 5100 shocks have different valving across the different part numbers.

This set I'm running is only 11" of travel, but I've got other issues limiting my articulation.

If you saw the puny oem sequoia links you would be disgusted. Also the spring over setup with all the links and brackets etc those things are a mess under there. Cant wait to cut all that bracketry off the axle.

 

Yeah, those upper links were about the size of the sway bar links. Embarrassingly small. Also, I ordered new rotors and pads last night. Let me know if you find anything else I need to get.

 

Re: parking brake. @bmf4069 have you ever used yours? because I only hit mine when I think about it to keep the rear drums adjusted.

Fell down the rabbit hole of line locks last night, and I do see a great off-roading use for one.

An electronic solenoid style would be awesome on trail if you need to get out of the truck in a precarious position. Pump the brakes twice and hit the button to have all four wheels locked up tight. Great for recovery, or just to run around back to get refreshments out of the cooler.

A manual valve could be used in place of the mechanical parking brake, but there's some room for error there with loss of pressure etc. I wouldn't rely on that say parked on sloped terrain on the street unattended.

Yes the axle shafts are splined on the carrier side. I'll snag you a picture today.

I've driven a lot of vehicles pre abs and definitely prefer it. Glad my tundra is abs free. Someday im going to make use of all that extra passenger fender space.

I put my LSPV at the master cylinder, glad I put it up there.



Put this tee in place of the LSPV. Put a plug on it but could also put a bleeder I guess.

Originally ran all three lines to the tee, but deleted the return line and it performs better. Also had to put a plug in the tee right beneath the master cylinder

 

Anyone used a 1995-2004 Tacoma third with the E locker?

 

Pretty sure I've never used it except when trying to adjust my brakes.

The factory e-lockers for those Tacomas are referred to as 8" while the open version is the 8.4"

 

Yeah TrueTrac. Speaking of which... It's time to show some humility and admit I was wrong about 3/4 of my previous hateful statements about my TrueTrac. I had bald tires and that was the cause of much of my issues. Bitch hooks up instantly on dry pavement now. Jury is still out on power slides . But in the rain, I does nice donuts.

Maybe check what the second and turd gen tacos use. I think it might be an 8.4" like ours.
Only the non e-locker first gen tacos used 8.4"

 

Pretty sure you're going to run into the same mounting issue.
