Just looked at my spare axle for a while. A 3rd member shave would only get you 1" of extra clearance at most.

What can you shave on the axle that creates clearance?

shaved pumpkin housing on a Currie high pinion 9” front axle. It’s inexpensive to do, but the labor is fairly involved. IMG_1645.jpg IMG_1646.jpg

Shaving down the pumpkin has been a long time mod. I haven't ever heard of any oiling issues. Yes, there is a little bit less oil in the axle, but the oil level will still come up to the same height on the ring gear (as it did before a high clearance shave).

I'll see if I can get some pictures, but I am wary of ECGS. I know half a dozen people who have had negligent failures of diffs from them. Granted, that has to be 5+ years ago, but I still worry. My brother, and at least 3 of those failures, were caused by failing to locktite the ring gear bolts. My brothers diff failed so catastrophically that it actually damaged the axle housing. The saving grace was that ECGS stood by their warranty, replaced the built diff, and sent him a new housing. My brothers was a '00 Tacoma Elocker that he regeared to 4.56.

@bmf4069 I'd be shocked if we didn't have a few options locally for quality gear work. You'd save money on freight cost at the very least. I'll ask around my network and see who's who.

Often times the speed shops or off road shops will do them. I’m very leery of most off road shops as they tend to cater to the looks vs function crowd. Speed shops on the other hand wanna go fast and know they will break shit, so they try to break proof things.

This will be fun to watch!

    Dumb questions:

You say fuck the rear axle seals and rear brakes...

A disc conversion kit would net you the same Sequoia rear brakes? Or am I missing something..

Are the axle seals different on a Sequoia?

Wheel bearing is a little bit different on the Sequoia, it's an assembly with the bearing in the case unlike the Tundra, where you have to press the bearing in the case. Still kind of a bitch to do since you'll still need a press, but I think it'll be a little easier to get everything where you need it to be. The annoying inner axle seals will still be the same.

    Sequoia axle shaft/ wheel bearing:

    upload_2025-1-25_8-35-22.png

    Tundra axle shaft/ wheel bearing:

    upload_2025-1-25_8-34-17.png

The Sequoia parking brake will be weaker than the Tundras, but it might be much easier to tie into the stock parking brake system. The parking brake in the SOS rear conversion kit is very lack-luster and took a lot of customization for me to get right. I had to switch the calipers where they were in front of the axle to get a better parking brake.

The SOS kit des mentioned is close to 2k. I'm betting we can come in cheaper than that. Plus, I don't think anybody has done this before. I could be wrong though.

And yeah, I've done my axle seals 3 times and they still leak. Me and @Sirfive did them perfect last time so it's possible I have a fucked up axle. We adjusted the brakes perfect too and they're still shit. I hate drum brakes.

That sounds good to me. I have no idea who does diff work in town. Also, it's roughly $1400 for f/r LSDs. Plus labor to build and your labor. I may just be regearing for now.

I've welded a total of 4 diffs for varies drift projects. The plate inbetween the gears is ideal. The bigger the better. It's like a fail safe. So even if the welds on the spider gears crack, that hunk of steel welded in place should keep everything from moving.

the best thing about welded diffs is that they're 100% predictable.
