2012 Aftermarket head unit - OEM camera wiring issues

Hey guys I finally upgraded to the 10'' head unit and everything works so far except the rear camera.

I understand you can install a aftermarket unit but i prefer oem...can anyone help me with the pin out?

I back tracked on my old head unit which harness supplied power/signal ect. Its a harness with 4 wires which i have attached a photo.

The strange part is i have a quite rare or unique oem setup. Its not the JBL Nav, but the gracenote navigation, oem integrated screen.

Did your backup cam previously display in the rearview mirror or on the head unit? Google says rearview mirror, but that's not always accurate.

If it originally displayed in the rearview mirror, you'd need to reroute the signal from the mirror, down to your new head unit. Five Star Car Stereo is an expert level shop that has a ton of Youtube videos on all things car audio, but they've got a video on exact steps/things you need to make this happen. If this is your case, you have 2 options. Split signal (and resolution) between the mirror/new radio, or send all the signal/resolution to the new radio. To do this, you'd need a PAC-39 voltage adapter ~$25 on Amazon, or I see one for $10 on Ebay.

 

It displayed on the screen. It’s frustrating because companies make a conversion harness for just about every type except this 5 pin I got.

 

On your pic above you're saying you've confirmed the 8-pin male connector with what looks like 5 wires is the backup cam? Doing some googling and it looks like that radio is part number 86120-YY211. Looking at a couple Ebay listings, is this where that connector plugged in on your old radio:


If so, in theory then you'd basically kinda follow what Dean at Five Star did, use a multi-meter to find which pins on the male connector in your picture are for what and just guess/test on the signal portion without a cctv tester like he has. If you can identify what's what with a multimeter, you could in turn probably track down the female 8-pin that's circled above, and then buy some pins and to make bare wire ends to attach to an RCA cable for input into your new cam, and then find reverse trigger wire. If you're not going to keep/use/sell that old radio, you might be able to disassemble and remove that female connector to use for making a harness.

This looks like it would be the same 8-pin female circled above, and then it has an RCA male to plug into an aftermarket head unit and a bare wire end for reverse trigger and ground like I was describing above. Can you get a better pic of that connector and show which pins in it are populated with wires? There's gotta be a solution out there somewhere. Also, might not hurt to reach out to the folks over at AutoHarnessHouse.com and see if they could make something up if the Ebay link here is not the correct connector/pin layout, could also maybe order that one and de/repin it if need be.

 

Snert - you are a saint. and making me over think now... Yeah most likely the original 5 pin one those wires is im willing to bet the reverse signal. I need to figure out how to read the wiring diagram you sent me to earlier. Its going to bug me.

 

If you get a cheap multimeter, you can test which wires are + and - by sticking the probes into the pins of the male connector in your original pic, and for the reverse wire, same thing, or you can get a cheap test light, connect the clamp to a grounding point and then poke the probe end into the pins with your truck in reverse and when it lights up that’s the reverse wire. I’ll keep searching to try and locate an adapter or that female connector so you can rig something up.

 

Getting closer lol...so I found this adapter and although I don't think it's totally correct, I think it does have the female connector you circled above:

Also, it looks like from 2011-2014 Toyota Siennas had nearly an identical radio option part number 86120-YY111, whereas the Tundra version was 86120-YY211.

Thank you again. Getting closer..... going to get a multi meter to test wires. Crazy how its driving me nuts though, im actually using my mirrors to back my truck up at the moment lol. I can't really blame toyota, they didnt expect people to upgrade head units like this.

 

Yeah follow Dean's process in that video (don't need the piercing probes like he has, you can just insert the regular multimeter probes into the connector pins), and then when you identify the wires, you'll also need to identify on your other wiring harness for your new radio where the reverse trigger wire is. What wiring harness/kit did you use to install your new radio, and what kind of radio is that, make/model?

 

What brand and model # 10" HU are you using?

Also did your OEM radio have an external OEM amp?

 

I may get some heat for this but a Daisaita knock off - probably just a cheaper version. I went with the Mid grade processor and actually so far so good. Excellent upgrade despite the rear camera. I am starting to think the factory harness has it built into the main harnesses - now i just need a reverse tap... trying to be positive. I also emailed the website you had mentioned yesterday.

The harnesses from the company are well built, and accidentally got a camera which i may install to the front one day...

Its a non JBL, Gracenote NAV screen. I will check underneath the passenger seat for an amp?

 

EDIT, I see the HU..

I could be wrong, but I don't think Gracenote is a type of navigation.
Gracenote gives you info on audio media being played.

yep, you are following now.

Did all the normal procedures, asked customer support - they are new to this style of head unit. As noted above it works fine, plays audio and all. But needing to figure out what OEM camera wires are needed to tap into aftermarket H/U.

I am going from a gracenote/denso/toyota unit PN 86120-YY211 to this aftermarket android unit.

 

There seem to be 2 different connectors for the old OEM HU for the camera.
Depends if you have the external amp or not.

Do either of these connectors look like they fit the old radio?

The letter in the circle where the wiring connects to the HU represents the connector used.
The number next to the circle designates which pin it is in the connector.

For the separate amp, that connector is G - K7



For the built in amplifier that connector is M - K23

 

Did they include a full list of which wires are what? Looking at the pictures, this wire jumps out that says "back" I think:

Could be the reverse trigger wire you'd need to connect to, ground I'm guessing is black wire in the "power cord" (opposite of Toyota's goofy commonly black + wires).

Is there RCA camera input on back of the head unit?

 

Yes there is an RCA camera input - and i understand where your going with this. I will try step 1 which is finding the trigger wire (probably one of the 5 pin wires from the original post) and connecting it to the reverse trigger wire on the new harness.

If that doesnt work i will need to tap into the 2-3 wires and convert it into an RCA input wire for the aftermarket unit.

I am hoping, they integrated the camera wires with the steering wheel control wires....

 

This shit hurts my head. Explain how to read the harness plug vs what shows on the diagram?

 

To expand/clarify on @1lowlife's example:


1) You're first looking at the 21 (G), ignoring the 21 for now and just focusing on the G circled in red.
2) Looking up at the connectors list, you'll see (G) corresponds to connector "K7", circled in purple.
3) In the EWD right after the color wiring pages you'll find the connectors drawings, like at the top there in black and white. You'd scroll around until you find K7.
4) Going back to the 21 before the (G) in step one, that corresponds to the pin number in connector K7 above.

 

Wow. yep, its connector K23.
Looks like the steering wheel buttons and camera is integrated into the 20 pin.

Now, lets see if my earlier thoughts worked - one of the 5 pin connectors is the reverse.

 

This might help.
You say everything else works.
What happens when you put the truck in reverse?
Does the screen go dark or not change at all?
Could the rev wire already be attached?


This is the wiring diagram from a Maestro RR steering wheel and radio install adapter for your 2012 non-JBL Tundra.
It does have the wiring diagram for those camera wires in a simpler form than the wiring diagrams we posted, although I'm sure the wires on your HU aren't the same color as the Maestro.


Pin 11 Red - video +
Pin 12 Shield - video -
Pin 13 Black - camera power
Pin 14 White - gound



I'm not sure where the rev signal originates, but it doesn't seem to be related to connecting the camera.
It is the purple wire on the bottom of the maestro diagram.
The wire may be already connected to another part of the harness.

Yep pin 5 is the reverse. Man can’t thank you enough. Gonna try to attach it today The aftermarket harness has a pig tail branched off for the reverse. If that doesn’t work then I’ll tap into k23 for the video pins 13-15

 

I found them. The new head units only pulling the 3 pins for the steering wheel controls (6,7,8)

gonna manually tap into 11-14 then plug into the head units video in.. sheesh I cant Be the only one that had this issue.

 

After a long 3 days I’ve found the adapter. Of course I can’t find it for sale

 

Okay here we go. Autoharness.com can make the harness but of course… it’s $80. He’s made one before and knows exactly what I need. Sure it maybe cleaner but how hard can it be To splice?

the black truck harness wire = power will hook up to power h/u (existing see photo) also with ground.

v+ and v- will be from a male RCA connector I recycled from the other optional harness.

lastly the 5 pin connector from the optional harness I ripped out and will use for the reverse.

 

I mean you should have it in the bag now, worth at least taking a crack at it since you've got what you need already. Having soldered/crimped a lot of connections over the years, I'm now more partial to crimping with butt splices, and using adhesive lined heat shrink over top. I have the Doyle (Harbor Freight) ratcheting crimpers for red/blue/yellow connectors and they're totally worth it imo. Probably need red butt splices for that gauge wire which are ~$5, adhesive lined heat shrink assortment on Amazon for ~$10, those crimpers are ~$20 but any wire stripper crimper would work too.

 

Ding ding ding! It hurt cutting the factory harness but whatever. Woohoo!
