At the price I’m seeing in the Navien units - Holy crap on installing two of them! :eek2:

I see that the Rinnai RXP can be bought with a recirc integrated - definitely been some upgrades to the designs in the 18 years since we installed ours.

Yeah, I was stoked there wasn’t an extra caddy or tank. But I may ask about upgrades there. Maybe it’s something to add later.

I’ve been thinking about relocating mine from my basement to my garage. Luckily I can handle the piping myself.

On the photo with the pipes showing, the flush/drain valves are there. I cropped the photo and drew a couple of arrows. I need to do the flush process.
    IMG_4712.jpg

I found an older photo that shows the access to the flush ports better.

    Excellent
    It was just hiding

the first time I installed my WH, I had no idea those valves existed. After the first time I had to flush it, I reconfigured the entire piping setup to add those into the system.

Hahaha. I knew about the flush on the tank water heaters…did I ever do it? Nope. I did not know about the flush method for tankless till it came up on this thread. Something to do on a warm day. I need to make a flush system first.

    That looks great!

Our yard isn't quite big enough for something like that but I'd like to build a bigger climbing wall outside for her this spring.

The burn is my new favorite finish. Looks way nicer than a stain imho. I did a shelf last month as well that turned out really well and The Woman has requested any future wood projects to have it.

Wallpaper sucks ass. When I did ours I figured out it was easier just to pull it off and then scrape the left over glue. It was hell.

    Riddle me this..
50gal Electric water heater, drained/flushed and changed anode rod. 4500w upper and lower elements.

Filled back up, purged air and checked amp draw for shits and gigs. Both t-stats were made up, only the top element fired off. Looking at the wiring diagram, only one element can run at a time!

    1. When does this switch operate?
    2. What's the point of having two elements if they both can't heat at the same time??

*Edit- now the lower element is switched on.. maybe the elements switch with every cycle?

A few... Definitely more than 2
I found this when I googled it. Seems, reasonable with the main benefit being half the current draw while the drawback would be longer cycle times.

"Storage water heaters having equal to or more than 30 US Gallon / 100 litres (different storage for different countries) needs more energy input to heat up the large amount of water. Plenty of times you may also go for more than One heating element so that content of the tank could be heated up more efficiently.

Although there could be more than 2 elements and maximum 6 For commercial water heating range but there are some models which could be customised for more no of elements as well, however right now I am only considering dual element model for the case of simplicity.

Now this configuration can have simultaneous operation and non simultaneous as well.

    • In Simultaneous models, both lower and upper elements would get on at the same time, however they may get switched off at different times. Since hot water is lighter than the dense cold water, so it would automatically rise to the top of the water heater always. So the lower element in this case would always be working more as the top element will cut off faster. This mode is faster in water heating as compared to non simultaneous one.
    • In Non Simultaneous models, its the upper model that gets kicked in first, and having heated the entire top content of the water heater it switches off and then it triggers the lower element to start. In this case wear and tear of both the elements is more or less same."

8 years, and we don't have that hard of water here.

I've looked for it before but I didn't think it had one.
Had to dig out 2" of foam to find the plug.. now i know!

In my experience, digging the foam out is the second worst part. Followed by breaking that sum bitch free from the water heater. The new model I have, I asked about that and swapping out the bottom drain to a more open one and they informed me that it immediately voids the warranty. So I will wait a couple more years before checking on it

No joke man, I tried a breaker bar but it took my 1/2" impact to bust it loose.

Mine has a brass drain valve, I guess a lot of the new ones are plastic.
    Figures..

You think I should replace the anode rod on my 52-year-old water heater?

It's been working fine for that amount of time....and given that, and given our water is perfect (0ppm for anything except some minor sediment), I'm wondering if replacing it is worth it.
