What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Bobsmirrors made up a harness that goes from the one tucked in the headliner to the one on the Gentex so I'm plug and play. Should be quick!

 

I think only the DC's have that option. Mines and AC and iirc the harness I got from that same guy has to be run to the battery. But it's been like two years since I ordered it lol. I don't drive that truck that often.

 

Sounds about right. I struck pre-wire gold on my truck haha.

 

Paint it black. That's always the solution for chrome, post-1989 vehicles.

 

Any photos of the green LEDs? I want to replace all of my bulbs but I don’t want to lose the soft green look.

Reminds me I think I need to clean the contact on one. It blinks sometimes and I'm pretty sure I've already changed the led out a few months back. The green isn't a match to the 06 gauges, but it doesn't bother me. It's closer to the radio green and the clock.

 

The screen in my 08 Lexus was matte and IIRC angled slightly up. I'm guessing that's what made a difference in minimizing glare. I am not an auto audiophile. I like a clean sounding stereo, but I don't need IMAX/THX in the front seat. I only need hands free calling and a backup camera display. This experience just reminded me of when I purchased a Macbook for my wife many years ago after the slick demo at the store. We got it home and it was slow as Christmas. Took it back to the store and the salesman said, "Well you're not going to get your best experience with just 8G of RAM". No kiddin? Why didn't your sales pitch include that tidbit? And with that, I'm done complaining.

Just spent more time on the phone with Crutchfield this afternoon and pulled the trigger on another JVC unit (KW-M590BT). This time, it is a new (not refurbished) unit with a capacitive (not resistive) display. It's about $80 more than the first one, but they're going to give me a full refund on the first one. I kept all the packaging and will send it back to them as neatly as it was received.

The new unit uses the same external microphone as the first one. So, I don't have to uninstall and reinstall a mic, which is what took up the majority of my time previously. Also, I think it uses the same wiring harnesses as the first unit, which will allow me to reuse the harnesses I've already connected and return the new harnesses to them with the first stereo. Had to give up CDs with the KW-M590BT, but my brother (who actually owns the truck) says he's okay with that.

 

What was the "shifty tailgate clip info"? Was that the clip he was using to hold the DIR harness relay? If so, I'd like to know where to get that part, too.

Sorry I missed this. The green is more intense, as it is light emitted from an LED and not a bulb cover. I thought about using warm LEDs and reusing the bulb covers, which I might do... (Bulb covers may rip tho).

I'd say that the light is more intense green now, but before my controls were lit but very dim and basically invisible at night.

The green is definitely more intense, and proportionally, brighter than the main dash.



Swapped a cover onto a warm white one cause you have me curious now, not sure if it will leak but here's a comparison vs the stock one bare.

 

Just bolt 1/2 a tree on the front of your truck & call it 1970.

 

Man I need to refresh the tailgate. PO had everything including the tailgate mechanisms bedlined. It’s as smooth as gravel on a washboard. It only takes three hands to open it.

 

Road trip to Tupelo in the FGT. Sure love driving this truck.

I'm sure my neighbors think I'm crazy for busting out my pressure washer this morning but I wasn't going to leave that salt on my truck. I picked up one of those foam cannons from Harbor Freight.

 

Thats dedication. Bestgens deserve to be heirlooms.

 

I love the bright white. I don't think I could stand red/green/etc.... and blue, blue LED specifically effs with my eyes. My whites have seemed to lose some of there original gusto/brightness though.

 

It's officially carwash season out here. Did the same with my Tacoma. Anytime I had to drive treated interstate and get the truck covered in melted, chemical spray, I take the first opportunity to wash it. Usually watching the roads and temperature really closely. Once things dried just enough to get to the carwash and back without my truck being covered in slush again or freezing solid, I'd wash it.

I never got around to fluid filming the frame this fall...so for this winter (unless I borrow a heated garage), it's just a lot of washes.

 

The OEM greens on the 06 doesn't bother me. I do wish it was more blue and less yellow though, to make it a greener green.
I love the red on my 03. Goes with the Terminator theme.

I read somewhere that blue is the worst color for dash lights because they make you sleepy

 

I'm sure it's not just me, but all the super blue LED Christmas lights are hard to focus my eyes on.

Did you fluid film or surface shield it at all in anticipation of winter this year?

 

Not this year. I got tired of the fluid film acting as a sponge for dirt. But the box portion is still drowning in it.

 

Got a plan to try and different product? I assume they're all pretty similar products so I'm not sure if any of them would offer a different result right?

 

I also have PB Blast Surface Shield but I think they all act the same. We only get salt once or twice a year so I'll probably just be vigilant about washing it off.

 

Surface shield is supposed to hold up better but it doesn’t creep like fluid film.

 

Pack that frame full of great stuff. I’m gonna need some cheap interior parts eventually.

 

PSA: Check you fuel tank straps occasionally, especially if they are original. I heard an odd clanging noise today so pulled over in a DG parking lot and looked underneath for anything out of place.

I found a broken tank strap that luckily was contacting the driveline at the slip yoke. Had I not heard the noise, who knows when I'd have realized it or possibly the front strap failing and the whole tank dropping to the ground mid commute

Ratchet strap got me back on the road in just couple of minutes and should hold until I get replacements.
