I've got 3 Taco 007 circulators on my heating system that have been running for about 8 years. They're flanged so you can replace the whole assembly with a couple gaskets or the motor cartridge can be replaced.

Thats awesome, saves up to 16k gallons and uses less power than a 25w bulb. I think those numbers along with "and youll have hot water without waiting 5 minutes" would make an easy sell. Gonna talk to Grandma this evening. Thanks for this info

I think ill go with a Taco continuous duty pump like @ColoradoTJ posted.

When I solder in the unions top and bottom, how does a guy spin all the nipples on without spinning off the other side?
In the electrical world we have a 3 piece rigid coupling for this scenario

I was thinking the same thing but opposite with mine, pex on both sides of the pump.. :monocle:

That way I can get everything in place and then crimp the rings.
What do you think? @ZPhilip @Festerw

I'd skip the pex and just use unions on both sides of the pump.

Please skip the Pex B as it causes a restriction compared to your copper there. I just don’t like Pex B.

This is a picture of my water meter, not a recirculation pump. This is how I would install it with unions on each side. Looks like you already have valves on either side of the pipe also so you don’t have to drain down whole house when swapping.

Sorry, but you are wrong, I'll explain. Say you have it set to 120, it heats up to 120 and then shuts off. Now some time passes and the water drops to 110, the unit fires up to bring it back to 120, but the water is already at 110 which I think most people would consider hot water. Thus, it is a hot water heater.

You're in AZ....110° is not hot.
Also, hot water is considered giving you, at a minimum, 1st degree burns. Which in my wife's scale if temperature, is not hot enough to bathe in and considered "pee-warm" water

    Interesting
My Taco inline circulator has been running for 18 years without an issue (goes and knocks on wood)
We use both at work - don’t have significant issues with either, but those are also usually much bigger units.
Does your pump run continuously? Looks like it’s plugged directly into the wall?

I use a clip on aquastat that clips to the outside of the copper pipe to control my recirculating. When the line drops below the preset temperature, it will circulate until it comes back up to temp - significantly reduced cycle time on the pump but also doesn’t leave me hanging during “off times” (as opposed to using a timer).
I also have all of my hot water lines insulated with 1/2” foam to help offset heat loss in that loop.

I would sweat the new one in. It is using the pipe to support it. Pex isn’t going to give it that support and may allow it to vibrate due to the rotation of the motor.

    What these two said.
    No PEX
The hardline supports the pump and provides straight line of smooth pipe to reduce flow restriction and possible cavitation.
Unions are a watertight pipe version of your 3-piece couplings. Use sweat ones - don’t bother with threaded nipples here… it’s just more leak points. And always use two wrenches when tightening them - one to backup the “male” side and one to tighten the nut.

Yeah, I've convinced myself to sweat the connections.
I can hear up the old solder to pull those pipes, right?

We've done a lot around the house in the past few months, but I'm terrible at pictures.

Installed an invisible fence for the pup.
    New garage doors(Costco program)
    Repainted the front door
Started to add stone around the back side of the house since that faces north and gets zero sun. Just turns into a muddy mess with a hose bib there too.
Blew out the irrigation system before winter

Had an electrician come out and run another outlet outside for the hot tub. I'm not too happy about it. First, he didn't install a new breaker, just used one that was already there and open. Then no GFCI outlet outside. The hot tube is a 110v and I have it on a GFCI plug, but I still think he should have put an outlet or GFCI breaker in. Then I'm having an issue with that outlet as once the heater for the hot tub kicks on, it trips the GFCI cord. It never did that on the other outlet or when we had it running with an extension cord. He said he will come back out and take a look, but I'm starting to doubt that.
