I'm 20 now, which is not old. At all. But I'm starting to realize that I'm no longer invincible. I used to be the same way as a kid- I'd ride my bike to school when it was like 20 degrees out. Now I can't go outside in the cold anymore without a jacket and a hat. Disappointing.

@FirstGenVol and I got down and dirty with my radiator today. 203k on the clock, maybe 80k/6yr since it was done last. It was leaking at a decent rate and seemed to get down to a level even just sitting, but definitely leaked while running.

Not sure if I was on the verge of pink milkshake….or what the reason for this discoloration would be.

    IMG_2560.jpg

Also had a weird experience with the coolant draining slowly. Then suddenly what seemed like a blockage cleared and it poured out without issue. Cap was open whole time. Not sure reason for it.

After we topped it off monitored temps. Hit just 186.5 or so maybe three times the whole 16 mile drive back or so. No leaks, no drop in coolant on the reservoir. Thinking we nailed it, just questioning if I was headed to pink milkshake territory.

Might do an ATF drain and fill next just to be sure. Last one was about 53k miles ago (150k).

Looks like some of us first gen guys are eligible for vintage vehicle plates this year, depending on the state.

There used to be a small (very small) financial benefit to having vintage plates as far as registration, and I am sure insurance too. Benefit isn't the right word here, I guess financial "break" is more accurate.

Is anyone planning on getting vintage vehicle registration?

Funny that you ask. I just looked into it this week. Mine qualifies in TN, but if I get antique auto plates, I can only drive it on the weekends or holidays. It's already very cheap to renew my tags here (~$70 year) so it's not much cheaper for antique auto tags.

Wow. I didn't realize they had stipulations on when they could be operated. That may be a state by state thing, I'm guessing. I think my state only limits mileage , but I don't know how they can verify that since there are no inspections here. 70 bucks is pretty reasonable.

PA has two, but regular registration isn't all that expensive either. $45 for cars, Truck/SUV is $77.

Classic is eligible after 15 years, Antique is after 25. Biggest benefit is classic is exempt from emission inspection and antique is exempt from safety and emissions.

Both have to be basically stock vehicles and but are limited “It is unlawful for any person to operate a motorcycle or vehicle with antique, classic, vintage, collectible or historic military vehicle registration plates for general daily transportation. Permitted use shall be limited to participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, occasional transportation and similar uses.” Occasional transportation and similar uses are defined as no more than one day a week. You also can't carry any loads in a classic/antique plated truck.

Pink milkshake isn't from old coolant but a leak between the cooling and oil system. Did you get a look at what those discolored blobs were? Also are you saying your cooling system was leaking (losing coolant) and if so did you find a fix the source of the leak? Looks like maybe you replaced the rad that was leaking and avoided the shake?

Is it possible the floaters you're seeing are residual shit that was stuck in the nooks and crannies of that catch pan? It seems small/insignificant.

Replaced the radiator and thermostat today. Radiator itself was leaking. Hoses were newish, so kept those for now.

Not sure what the discolored blobs were. Thinking maybe I was headed to pink milkshake territory, given the boobs and leak. Planning ATF drain and fill to be safe.

Maybe, I didn’t inspect the catch pan or not sure if it’s crap that fell off the body as coolant drained from a hose or thermostat area. Though knowing @FirstGenVol that catch pan was clean enough to hold the salsa for our quesadillas.

The pan should have been clean but I know a little ATF dripped in it when we removed the trans cooler line. The coolant color just looked off. I noticed if first and didn't say anything. Then John pointed it out. It honestly looked... Kinda milky? The last few times I drained my coolant both on the truck and the Rav, I don't remember it being that color. :notsure:

His transmission hasn't blown up so I'm assuming he's good.

Definitely looks cloudier than I'd like.

Did you guys only open the petcock on the radiator, or did you open the block valves also?

After seeing others complain about slow/no draining from the drain blocks due to blockage, and hearing about the no-flow/plonk/good-flow incident that happened, it had me thinking.

    How much coolant came out?

I will double check tomorrow but something like 1.5 out and I wanna say closer to 2 in? It was leaking and low from the drive to his place.

    Only petcock was opened.

Wonder if @shifty` is right and the blobs were leftover oil in the catch pan? If really wanting to clear the transmission consider an ATF flush.

So did you flush the coolant. If not there is a bit left in the block that would mix back in.

I'm pretty sure our trucks hold closer to 3gal of coolant, there's another ½-¾ gallon
(EDIT: or more) in the block...

    Read the fucking manual

DC is 11.3 imperial quarts is 3.4 gallons. You only drained roughly half, it sounds like.

We did not drain the block this time. Just the petcock. The last time we opened his block drains we had issues with one side continuing to leak for a while. We'll be draining the system again when we do his timing belt job. Can't wait to mangle more shit on his Ridgeline.
