I am new to this forum and also realize that it is an older forum however I'd like to share some thoughts on my 1st gen Toyota Tundra that may be helpful for some.

My truck: 2006 Toyota Tundra SR5, Access Cab, 4.0 Liter VVTI, automatic 5 spd, 2 WD. Currently have 150,000 miles and has never been into a repair shop for any reason. Did go to a Toyota dealer for recall service a few times. Garaged it's entire life and is extremely well maintained and in showroom condition. This engine 4.0 v6, VVTI in 2005 & 2006 1st gen Tundras have a timing chain which is a nice perk.

I drove this truck off the dealer lot in AZ in 2006 and let me say upfront that this is the absolutely best truck I have ever personally owned. It came with a factory towing package and I have towed mostly light weight trailers and a small rv camper with no problems at all. It has plenty of power when needed and economical to drive. I have considered selling it a few times and I just can't seem to part with this truck.

Maintenace is crucial for any vehicle and this truck is no different. So if you run into a used Tundra that have been owned and maintained by its owners you should be considering that truck a real gem. In my experience if a truck is cared for you can rest assurred that mechanical issues that come up from time to time will be addressed. Rust is not an issue in AZ howver rust can be a real problem on body and mechanical parts on vehicles, so be aware.

Lots of stories out there from some Toyota owners stating that they rarely changed the oil and did not take care of their vehicles and still got tons of miles out of them. I beleive those stories. So just think what a 1st gen or any Toyota Tundra could do with some proper care and maintenance. Hundreds of thousands of miles and some over a million miles. Now that's real value!

Thanks KNABORES for your response. That is a mega thread. I will for sure do a deeper dive into the thread soon. When I stated that my truck has never been to a repair shop translates more correctly to: I maintain and address issues that come up myself which have been rare. Forums like these are so helpful and insightful. If you have anything to do with the mega thread that you suggested your to be commended. Thats a ton of useful information that you can't get anywhere else. Still working my way around the forums. Hopefully I can add some helpful info along the way. Thanks again---BG

I think many forum members have played a part over the years in contributing knowledge that would get buried amongst the pages in various threads. @shifty` did some heavy lifting and created the thread to organize those shared bits so that they were easily accessible.

When folks ask me what I want for mu '06 AC, I tell them about $60K. Because that's how much a perfectly good truck that will last 500k miles and I don't owe any money on will cost me.

Everyone talks about German engineering but the Japanese have the Germans crushed when it comes to building things for longevity. My father in-law has almost 500k miles on his first gen. Just do the scheduled maintenance and it could possibly be your last truck you'll ever need to purchase.
