@TheMuffinMan Even if the seats underneath those hideous covers are dogshit, you can always just get another set of covers that aren't from the Liberace collection.

You're probably not going to find another $34K truck that's as good to go as this one. Already has the fun pump installed and documented 5K oil change intervals. Im not a fan of the looks of the Double Cab, but I am jealous of the 6.5ft bed.

    I'd say go for it...

To R&R the engine, 3400 yup

How many hours does Toyota quote for a motor R&R?

It appears he is at 26, I searched and it looks like it is 17.5

    Google Ai says 13-21:

Based on recent information regarding a Toyota Tundra engine recall, Toyota estimates that replacing the 5.7L engine in a Tundra (and the related Lexus LX SUVs) takes between 13 to 21 hours. This estimate is tied to the recall effort involving a significant number of engines.
In essence, Toyota's official communication indicates that replacing the 5.7L engine in a Tundra would require approximately 13 to 21 hours of labor.

    Further context:
    • Recall:
The estimate is related to a recall announced in December 2024, where Toyota committed to replacing a large number of Tundra and Lexus LX engines.
    • Cost:
The recall's cost is estimated to be around $3,000 to $5,000 per vehicle, suggesting the significant scope of the replacement process.
    • Independent repair:
While the 13-21 hour estimate is from Toyota's recall effort, it offers a general idea of the labor time involved in replacing the 5.7L Tundra engine. If you're exploring this at an independent shop, the labor time might be similar, but it's best to check with a specific mechanic for a quote.

Yeah I booked my flight. It's a very good deal with the blower and has good maintenance records, no rust belt origins which is hard to beat in this market. I mean I was almost ready to drop $35,900 on a 2021 Canadian/Alberta imported DC SR5 Voodoo Blue with the TSS package and some Canadian options they could get on an SR5 like leather seats, parking sensors, power rear vertical sliding window which are more limited trim down here with 95k miles painted front grill shroud, bumpers located near Idaho Falls, ID. Looks clean and per the sales people's pictures no rust worse then usual but they won't haggle at all. I love the color but It's hard to spend that kind of a premium on a color. I could find a SR5 w/upgrade package DCLB's for 31-33k for 2017-2021 90k miles or less but either way the S/C is $8100 and the overall cost is a lot higher for these other trucks and then adding the blower. Plus I don't have to mess with installation, and while I don't mind installing the S/C myself if I don't have to then all the more reason not to.

For the one I'm flying out to get I can hopefully source a used OEM 38 gal tank for $400 or less but now that I realize the seats are just covers and I don't need to budget in new seats it's even more appealing price wise. I have to have at least a 6.5' if not an 8' bed, either is fine so it's double cab life for me.

Yars seems like it’s worth checking out. TRD pro in double cab is rare, if mine ever exploded Id be looking at this combination.

Called 3 other shops, one that is a rebuilder wants 12.5 including a bored over .20 fully rebuilt engine with a 1 year unlimited mile warranty. (normally 3 year but not with the SC) It sounds good but I was trying to stay under 11k.

He said he is quoting 3700 for the R&R.

Next one said 38, and the other 4k.

Guess suddenly the 3400 is not so bad lol

I can't find a ride around the holiday and my wife has to work and hates driving long distances anyway when she has to do the driving for the return trip. Renting a uhaul automotive trailer ($247 one-way) to tow the wife's Subaru AWD home after I drive it out would be more expensive then even a last minute flight during a holiday week ($210)

I could Greyhound it but the overnight buses are all booked, the day buses are cheap ($85) but get me there after end of business for banks and I'm not going to walk around with a 34k cashiers check on me. So I leave a day earlier and but then add in the cost of a cheap overnight hotel ($70 with taxes and fees) it'd be only $55 more to hop a 7am flight out the morning of and I wouldn't have to be on a bus for 7 hours with stops and spend an overnight in a cheap hotel. Which I'd be fine with but for $55 more I don't have to do any of that, worth it to me.

$210 cheapest Alaskan flight for a holiday last minute booking, fly out at 7am, land 8:20ish. Meet up with the guy at a local branch of my credit union, sign the paperwork. Stop at Ikea or something if I get a shopping list from the wife and then get some early lunch aka hotpot or some other Seattle area lunch I can't get around where I live. Then I might be on the road by noon or sooner and I'll be home by dinner. Not to mention Spokane airport is smaller and super easy to get through. Worse I've ever seen it take me was 35 minutes total to get from the cheap uncovered parking through security and to my gate. If I'm not parking it's more like 10-15 minutes to get through security and to my gate.

What does the "fully rebuilt" engine include? Is that $12.5k including 3700 for the R&R or is the R&R ontop of the 12.5k?

I found a 70k '18 Tundra motor. The yard says it is not compatible. That is wrong no?

He said they fully go through the motor, use upgraded parts (not forged) it is total price but not including tax on the motor.

I'm staying at 11k max, found an 18 motor that sounds good if it fits (which I can't believe it won't)

NOT forged?? That sounds like fully assembled, not fully built...

What about a short block from XAT? I think they start around 5700 for forged internals, plus your core.

Thanks for verifying that the '18 fits

My issue is the head, they want 12+ for the full deal. I'm maxing it at 11.5 & that is way more than the wife wants to spend, if she had her way, we'd put it back together, drive into a dealer & trade it for 13k.

I told her I'll be buried in it so no.

    lol

Like @armyoffoo stated it fits. Viktor said a lot of vendors will say it doesnt fit according to VIN but they do.

Just thinking out loud, but you're 100% sure it's a valve? Leak down was done correctly? To save money and time for now, why not pull just the one head for now. Verify the issue. If it's as simple as replace or machine for one valve maybe just do that for now. Can buy head bolts and gaskets for individual sides. Saves time and money and gets you going for now. Would probably last a long time TBH. Gives you plenty of time to decide how to proceed. Wait for a deal on a used short block to build on the side or swap in, in the event of a future failure. But honestly, I'd just fix the one valve and send it. Not much to lose at that point.

@j_supra good thinking...easiest option if he has the room to get it done and time. Think he's also dealing with the bimmer engine.

If this were not my current reality & I did not need the Sequoia to get the motor I would have pulled the head. The shop checked my deduction while I watched & verified I was not wrong.

    Screenshot 2024-12-23 at 10.33.41 AM.png

    Screenshot 2024-12-23 at 10.34.00 AM.png

I have no room to do the job, but more importantly, now I'm concerned the rest of the motor has issues.

I paid 4k delivered from around the corner where the truck is now for this:
    2018 Tundra 70k Precision 602-288-8888.jpg

The shop just called and said Toyota said it will only work in a non flex truck, I said I have a non flex ecu (had a nightmare with the system thinking it had 85% ethanol when it had 10), Sniv tried to fix it in the tune, I said fuck it, got a new ecu. That's paying off now :p

Anything is possible of course, but I’ve never really noticed head problems reported with these from many people aside from the occasional broken valve spring especially on earlier model engines. Could it be that simple?

No idea, once I have it home on a stand (that I'll have to buy AGAIN) I'll open it up & find out. Worst case, I have a fresh motor & a spare. My main issue is I'll have to move the damn thing when we retire in a few years.

    Off topic, kinda.
Transmission update: Everything rips and very happy, but I'm in the process of making edits to my trans table. I got P2757 due to (what Level10 and I agreed on) the ECU thinking line pressure is coming up too quick from the trans table edits. I'm going to reduce a lot of the numbers in the pre 30% TPS to close to stock for more seamless shifting down low. I have a slight lump in the shift because it's so quick - I think it's increasing line pressure to quick and pulling too much timing when it's not needed. I could leave it, but I might as well fine tune things. I'm going to leave the high end at 1.9x because that is perfect for the power... but I don't drive around full throttle all the time. I drive light on the throttle too, so need that more like stock power figures. Anyway, all is great and the truck runs very well. Just sharing for those messing with their torque table. I think a 1.5x start is aggressive. I'm going to change my table to 1.1x for the first 3 or 4 columns and then gradually go to 1.9x till 65 or so TPS%, then keep at 1.9x through WOT. Seems like a more realistic assumption of power based only on TPS.

Don't get rid of stuff because of a move. I got rid of heads, transmission and a bunch of hang onto items that I wish I kept. Hopefully my next move will be my last.

One thing from IPT/slownstock and VFR tuning notes is not to raise it too high as it can damage the transmission. What is the trans torque limit?
My p2757 went away by adding a little extra atf and disabling flexock up. Could of been a coincidence but it hasn't come back in over a year...knock on wood. Haha

I'm not too concerned about trans damage as it's under warranty and level10 has been great about taking care of me from that perspective. Not saying I want to kill the trans.
Going to play with numbers and see how things change.

SlowNStock knows about us here doesn't he? He might get a bit overwhelmed with questions at first, but it sure would be nice if he were to choose to hang out here.
