What kind of use did you put it through? I'm thinking if you hardcore trailed it, a full locker setup should've been what you went with in the first place. I look at LSDs as your DD, weekend warrior type mod and even then if you're gonna hit the Hammers that weekend, leave it at home and take the true locker out :p

I haven't heard of powertrax failures. As stated if you are mainly offloading a locker should be considered.

My brain can’t compute how the helical 6 gear would be weaker than the powertrax 3 gear. Also being pre sprung would assume quicker operation. Good for on road shenanigans, on road inclement weather, and off road everything.

I learned the hard way. I should have locked from the start on that truck. Shes now locked F&R. Like I said above, I was putting too much power to too big of a tire for that diff. It was great on the street but really suffered and deteriorated on the trail. By the time I pulled it it was basically like having an open diff again.

I'm running 295/65r20 will be installing the speedmaster. I have no reservations with the power and my setup. The Auburn did not hold up and I burnt it out in 6 months. I haven't read about powertrax failures and the speedmaster sounds like a good unit. Even with the issues from summit/jegs.

Definitely would do the full spool being in the dunes. The Auburn held up ok when I was bombing the logging roads in western WA. But they are all locked up now.

Question for you. Not sure if it’s a dumb one or not but here she goes.

For breaking in the front gears. Are you just driving around in 4hi for a bit on straight roads? Have you done any break in on the front gears? Are they equally as noisy (read -make noise, not awfully loud) as the rear?

I really want to pull the trigger on the speed master, but there’s not a lot of info on them out there on them!

Gears should never be noisy. If it's a little bit like on decel or coast/certain speed most just live with it.
It requires to pull the carrier and go through the setup again. Most don't want to deal with it. The benefit of doing it yourself you can keep pulling until it's dialed in.
Drive around in 4hi for the front...

My gears aren't noisy but at low speeds you have to focus but you can hear a whine. I have only gotten in a little mud so far but yes I could tell there was a locker

My Nitro 4.56's in my other truck had a slight whine at 45-50 mph. I ran those gears for almost 30k, and when I pulled the diff and had it regeared again to 4.88's, the shop said there was no issue whatsoever with them. I've still got them and I can't see any odd wear or damage on them.

I could hear a slight whine with the rear window down coasting at slow speed. Don’t hear it anymore, but have some hearing loss so can’t be sure. Personally rode in at least 5 other Tundras with 5.29 gears and they all whined. None of the Tundras I’ve been in with 4.88 gears made noise. Thread below has some info on it.

Lsd is awesome, gears are great so far no complaints. There is a slight and I mean slight whine but it doesn’t bother me. I’ve been pulling a small utility trailer and a quad and the truck doesn’t even get bothered anymore as where it used too.

A few more of us have the Speedmaster installed. No issues with mine as I've been putting it through its paces. A few impressions of it on the 5.29 cheap gear thread.

Still as happy. LSD is great still had some snow in my region south GA and it was a dream come true to run it. 5.29s got slightly louder but I don’t care. Seems 5.29 are whiny from any manufacturer so take that for what it is.

The snow portion of your comment really helps. I'm in CO and it's either let the traction control go ape in 2WD or grab 4WD.

I've heard that about 5.29's for a long time, not just with the Tundra's. I'm not planning on going that deep, I'll just be doing 4.88's when I make my decision on the LSD. I'm looking for a spare 3rd member to regear. I've already got a good front.
