Finally Joined the 1st Gen Club - 06 DC

They probably bypassed the amp, unless I misunderstand the manual for the PAC unit.

Quick peek on the driver's side rear seat, behind the plastic cover, will tell you if amp is bypassed or not. If you see either of the 2 OEM harnesses unplugged from the OEM amp, then they're bypassing.

Yea, I hadn't got that far yet. What I did see is that the app can tell the PAC to trick the pioneer parking brake mode.

I assumed it wasn't because when I swapped the PAC plug from amp to non-amp, there were volume and gain issues. I'll pull the cover later. Would be great if it was already bypassed!

After procuring some additional info on the Truck and having it visit the shop... The only things of note are:

1. Timing belt is at 70K but has hit it's 8.5 years. I feel like I've got a lil time to research and watch the videos.

2. Battery is Old, that's fine. I'll change

3. Slight weep at passenger axle seal, minor.

4. Don't have record of PS fluids change, but it looks clean.

5. Need an OEM air filter.

6. Aftermarket Upper Radiator Hose, its a little short. Will replace with OEM and OEM Clamp

7. Plugs are at 30K. Not sure what they were replaced with, I'll have to see if I can pull a part number. If regular (Nickel) I'll probably replace. There seems to be some internet confusion but I'm leaning

$10 Denso SK20R11 Iridium Spark Plug, Pack of 1

Denso SK20R11 or NGK IFR6T-11 for longest life platinums.

 

3. Consider replacing the little vent breather nub on top of the rear diff pumpkin.

7. Pull a plug, verify. Both of your options are what’s listed in the Owners Manual for my 2006, although there is a typo, the S and K are reversed. DO NOT buy on scAmazon or fleaBay.

 

I promise I won't but fake plugs on the Internet. I'll see the good ol boys down the street.

 

You seem to know how to research, know what youre talking about. Not sweating the small stuff. This is going to be a great truck for you. Just be careful with plastic stuff & rust.

I got curious this morning when we were looking at springs and color patterns. I have been wanting to pull my shock assembly off and lift them for a while but have just not put in the time. Decided to at lunch because i didnt really pay attention to what color mine were when i did the shock swap and i've been wanting to raise the front end a clip or two so it gave me a good excuse to pull the front wheel off and look at the spring.

Ever seen a drivers side Red and Gold? Passengers side Gold Gold?
Before pulling anything apart i did a bunch of measurements, even have measurements off the OEM shock. Was really wanting to try to see how much lift you get with each change in shock length. My truck with the Eibach adjustable shocks on the lowest setting, with stock springs was within 1/8th" on drivers and passengers side. I didnt have the typical Toyota lean like the Tacoma and 4R do. With them on the second clip i got almost exactly +1.5" on both sides they are within 1/4".
The bed rail shows level, but the side step is nose high. The front is noticably higher and i'm either going to bring the front end down a notch after driving it a week or so, or lift the rear up a shade more.

 

Thanks, that's reassuring. Contrary to popular belief, my state does salt the interstate, especially during big snow events. So I will be fluid filming the truck I think, as I am an avid skier.

Can confirm 2003 AC 4x4 colors that were bright painted even after about 250k. Touched up the black at rub points when assembling. But don't match yours ... DC seemed to have the reds, blues and purples but those look likely stock.

Interesting, thats the same combo i had, i had the same black shocks. I think its a red / gold. I scrubbed it to try to lighten the color and i am pretty sure its a red / gold. Not sure of the spring rates, i dont guess it matters unless someone was really trying to make an extensive list of colors and fitment. 2005 Double Cab Limited 4wd with Red / Gold + Gold / Gold

 

For the records if someone is tracking... do you recall the side each was one?

I forgot to measure before swapping out the shocks and coils. I'm using the same shocks (Eibach Pro Truck) along with the their matched springs. Visually, on the bottom notch it looks pretty close to stock height and I haven't yet bumped them up any higher though I would like to go up one.

I agree with Shifty #3 - definitely check to make sure your rear diff breather is free and clear before diving into axle seals.

Did you plug your VIN into Toyota yet to check dealer history on it?

 

Yup, western WA. I'll check the diff breather, but right now, soft brakes based on no auto adjustments happening is the issue.

Ya. Excellent maintenance records there too, earlier in trucks life (probably warranty period) no LBJs there either tho lol

 

Lots of info and rabbit holes to jump into regarding rear brakes.

Threads galore and some really good info awaiting the true enthusiast that is willing to dive in and figure them out. The auto adjusters can be an issue but if they're "adjusted" properly at the moment (you did so manually with drums on) and you still have the spongy pedal - don't overlook all the other shitty areas we have to stay on top of (LSPV, Booster, Proper Bleed).

Do you have "auto LSD" and the gnarly looking brake booster kegerator?

 

Tell me about it... I have enough understanding to know that the star ratchet is not getting spun by the lever, and that the bell cranks are actuating, but in between, I dont know... I detailed my experience here. The brake performance does improve with adjustment, and does improve with parking brake depression to "cheat" the distance. Which is why I don't think the LSPV is out of adjustment.

I do not have VSC or Auto LSD, thank god. I have a true LSD rear end, which I am very thankful for.

 

Sparks were Iridium densos! jackpot.

Brakes are feeling VERY good with manual adjustment now.

Parts procured for heated seats via OEM switches.

Skidrow trans/catguard installed.

Frame wire wheeled, cleaned, prepped, and POR15'd. With 3 cans of Fluid Film applied for winter.

Ok, there has got to be a thread for color matching the chrome strip on the bumper. Part 52701-0C010, but I cannot find one!

New wheels and tires this week. 6112s soon to follow with an LBJ job.

Looks like a great score on your DC! And I'll echo what others have said - between your mechanical experience/aptitude and enjoyment of (semi)classic trucks, you seem like a match made in heaven for the FGT. Looking forward to following your progress!

BTW, where in WA are you? We spent about 6 weeks up there this past year between the gorge, Taidnepam/St Helens, Gig harbor, ONP, Anacortes, San Juan and Orcas islands, Leavenworth, Grand Coulee, and Spokane (actually CDL, ID).

Right now my goals are:

1. To create safety margin where possible. Tires and ball joints come to mind as the truck will see a lot of winter storms and slick conditions. These will happen in the coming week.

2. Promote longevity. Fluid film and my frame maintenance are done. I do push my trucks beyond the pavement and do drive moderately aggressive, so the spacer lift has to go, too many cracked spindle stories. Gussetted ones probably won't happen until the hubs start howling. Most other maintenance is up to snuff. Timing belt and all the goods this spring/summer I think.

3. Fun stuff is last and will probably slow roll next year. Bigger brakes, better head unit and speakers, spindles, might repair and reinstall airbags (lines)... Heated seat stuff, backup camera, the list is already too long. I remember I have an auto dimming mirror from my Tacoma, wonder if the plug is the same...

4. I'd like to get a camper on here, something like a FWC fleet or maybe a Topo Rincon, or maybe a Scout Tuktut? Definitely something minimalist and light. Getting a little old to be hunched over in the Leer shell these days and trying to dry shit from skiing... This might happen before the stuff under 3 if I can just enjoy the truck for a while LOL.

I ordered ball joints from SparksParts coming up like 3 weeks ago, and they've been stuck in the FedEx black hole on the tracker since the 9th...

I really wanted to do the LBJs because the truck has no record of them being changed in 140K... They feel good to me, with no play, and my mechanic didn't seem to notice anything either... But dang I don't really want to risk it on this fresh purchase! Drive a few hundo on some weekends and have Christmas travel coming up and I'd feel like such a fool if I lost a LBJ in the next few weeks because I was too impatient and wanted to drive!

Do I just wait until they show up or fork out $300 to buy from a more local source and hope to have before next weekend? Then I got another set hanging around, which could be considered dumb or could be considered good... I dunno...
