Nope that's the "off-road package" skidplate. TRD skidplate has the oil filter housing access panel. One #5 Allan later and we're in business.

I really do love my Jowett too. The XL puppy training pads I'd throw around during oil changes are unnecessary now, most oil I get on my gloves is cracking new bottles open.

    Nitrogen filled tires!
Fumoto for me. 15 years of use with 4 vehicles and never a problem. And as posted the only way to f up the install is to cross-thread or over torque - all operator error!

Both are technically "TRD" skid plates. Easier way to differentiate is to call the big aluminum one the Pro skid. I've seen tons of confusion when people just refer to their skid as the TRD skid. Which TRD skid? LOL

The drain plug is not the issue. The issue is 8 quarts blowing out at an angle directed right at your passenger side wheel, hub, and brake. Oil flying everywhere! Remove wheel, clean everything for over an hour....blah, blah, blah....Did it once, found a solution. YMMV

    Really good point.
This is the first change I've done in a long time that wasn't from the top using an extractor.
I do appreciate Toyota putting the cup around the filter.

I guess you’ve never changed oil on a 5.7? If the oil is at all warm, there’s exactly how and where it drains.

What can I say? Occasionally some of us among the unwashed masses of Gen 2 and 2.5 owners get lost and end up in the Gen 3 forum.

I’m not sure if it’s our caveman mentality paired with the fact that when we click “newest posts” it shows us posts from all forums, or if it’s the fact we enjoy coming here for the reminder of all the problems our trucks don’t have. :boink:

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
I got the fumoto valve. I got the national geographic nipple version. Installed at 8XX miles when I did my first oil change. The liquid oil flying out into my oil container bounced and made a mess with the OEM drain plug removal. With the valve I am sure I can control the flow a little better and redirect. Currently at 1500 miles and haven't noticed any leaks or motor seizing.

It was cool that the engineers made a little catch ramp for the filter oil to drain and be redirected but if you don't have the proper hose it just pours into the frame (crossbar?). Maybe next time I DIY I will figure out the diameter of that opening and be prepared.

15mm inner diameter is what I've seen. I purchased one from Amazon and will be doing an oil change soon with it. Can't confirm until the change is done, but I'm feeling confident...

That will work. I bought 3' of 5/8" ID at the hardware store for $2. I used about 1' and just throw it away.

I’ve used Fumoto valves on every vehicle I’ve owned since I discovered them. (VW TDI Jetta, Volvo XC90, Toyota Corona [really], Toyota Tacoma, and my Tundra Platinum when the time comes. I worked for 10 years in the maintenance department of a large commercial bus garage and Fumoto valves were installed at the first oil change on every vehicle on the lot.

The RCI skid plate works great with the Fumoto valve. I have about 1000 dirt miles with this set up and no problem. I don’t need to take off the skid plate

Interesting. My ~3 y.o RCI skid is not like that. It's more narrow.

For anyone that has the Valvomax, is there a proper way to drain if you dont have the tool that comes with it which opens the check valve? If possible I would like a system that is not dependent on a proprietary tool. Fumoto just open the petcock but I understand the potential risk with that getting hit by a rock, branch etc.

I am not sold on either but simply wanted to get some feedback on how to drain the Valvomax without the tool.

    Thanks!

Just ordered mine; should be here on Saturday; just in time for the first break-in oil change (1,000 miles or so).

I offroad in deep packed snow with Fumoto. Steel clip or a piece of copper wire keeps lever in place.
