I can't help but point you at Bob's website: https://www.bobsmirrors.com/

Not joking. He's a font of info on everything mirror related you could ever want to know. And he sells adapter pigtails and install kits. His fleaBay presence is quite substantial.

My 2018 Tundra mirror is similar to the Kia mirror shown above and also has homelink

Most people use Gentex brand instead of off-brands. Longer reputation, easy to find used for cheap, and a crazy array of feature sets and LCD colors.

Got one for a Kia under $50, $60 with shipping and tax. Same as some others I have seen ITT. Gentex model HFCHL4

    IMG_9128.jpg
    IMG_9141.jpg

4 wires out of the mirror, but only 3 in the supplied connected harness (see pic) - ground, solid black, black w/yellow
My DC did not come prewired

    IMG_9129.jpg

This mirror fits my existing tombstone perfectly.

I don't want to tap into the existing wires for the overhead console lights so I ran it through the headliner and down the A pillar on the driver's side The supplied wiring harness was long enough

i'm going to first try it by combining the constant and switched power wires for the mirror into one and then use a fuse tap into the cigarette lighter fuse/power source. I believe others have tested this in the constant power wire is just for the garage opener

I am curious if anyone knows if there is a constant power source on the kick panel fuses other than the stop fuse which I believe is the brake light. I wouldn't want to tap into the brake light fuse because it is too critical. Just curious if there is another so if I change my mind, I wouldn't have to run the constant power wire through the firewall

    IMG_9134.jpg

I would also like to add the ambient temperature for the mirror one day which requires mounting the sensor in front of the radiator. But I have too many other Tundra projects that are more significant right now

so presently the cost of this project for me will be $70. 60 for the mirror and 10 for the fuse tap

apparently this mirror defaults to the dim mode because when I drove it last night, it dimmed all lights seen through the mirror. Huge difference. I didn't realize even when you don't have someone directly behind you how annoying some of the lights can be.

they supplied conduit for the wire from the mirror to the headliner is not quite long enough for our trucks or at least for mine. Probably should've just left it off

    IMG_9144.jpg

anyway for 70 bucks, I highly recommend.

Typically the wires on auto-dimming, if 4 are present, will be:
    • Ground
    • Disable dimming in reverse
    • Constant power 12v
    • ACC/ON power 12v
The ACC/ON power is to cut down on battery drain for some things like not having compass and auto-dim on while not driving around? And disable dimming in reverse, that should be a no-brainer. If you're backing up in your driveway, you don't want wall sconces or flood lights dimming your mirror so you can't see what's behind you... but what bothers me is the constant power to Homelink, which if you park on the street or in the driveway, allows anyone to jump in your truck and open your garage while it's not on. That's not cool.

I'm attaching the schematics and pinout diagram from their FCC filing on the HFCHL4 in the PDF here (see link below this image/in reply attachments), but here's a cheater image showing the wiring, which may actually conflict with words I added above:

I read that in one of your other posts. However, since mine only has three in the harness with one being the ground I'm 99% sure the other two are for constant and switched power. I could be wrong, but I don't believe it has one to disable the dimming in reverse, but you could always turn it off on the button on the mirror. That's also not as big of a factor since I have a back up camera as long as you can manually turn it off on the mirror

and the security factor is why I don't mind combining the switched and constant power since the constant power is for home link

Absolutely. In the case of the mirror, I'd leave pin #10 open/disco'd. I had it set in my brain it HAD to be connected or the compass would lose its configuration, though. I may be wrong.

Yeah that's why I mentioned I may have to go back and add the constant power. However I seem to recall that others said it maintained their settings for home link when both power wires were switched so I'm assuming it will not lose the settings for the compass as well. Hopefully

and that wiring diagram is very helpful however, mine only has three on the harness

Homelink stores codes on-chip so it can replay them.

It's the compass I thought you had to recalibrate with power loss, but it's entirely possible I'm wrong on that, becuase I don't recall ever having to do it on any of my other vehicles with compass in the mirror.

And yeah, caught that on the harness only having 3 wires. But quick Q, did you not have any wires in the headliner above the overhead console? A lot of later-year DC owners have both the white square block (roughly 16-20 pin) and some have the black 6-pin wide block. The latter is for the OEM autodim mirror. But you can also tap into wires from the larger block. Can link you up with the thread on it if you need.

mine had the larger white block but I believe it only had three wires which I assume is a power for each of the two overhead lights and a ground

edit: I suppose I could just tap into the constant power for those lights if I need to make a change. I was stubbornly trying to avoid tapping those wires.

For wire taps, just use posi-taps, they only pierce the OEM wire, they don't mangle the casing or damage the strands. If you pull it later, dab a drop of paint, liquid electrical tape, whatever on it.

I believe this is the wiring breakdown most recently passed on by Bubba: https://www.tundras.com/threads/temp-sensor-for-upper-dash-map-lights.95642/page-2#post-3774153

I take it yours looks like this, 3-wire? https://www.tundras.com/threads/compass-temp-not-working.76567/#post-2774445

Again, another awesome pinout from Bubba: https://www.tundras.com/threads/compass-temp-not-working.76567/page-2#post-2775857

Member '912' has a great pic of what/where the 6-wire is located normally, in his build thread.
