Know what? I’m a moron. I confused a tailgate lock cylinder with the fuel door lock cylinder. I’m still using my original fuel door cylinder.

I like that idea of taking the wafers out of a new one.

I wonder if we might somehow be able to 3D print a push button device to keep the door closed without needing any key. I’d like something like that, Oregon has full serve gas so I have to hand a key or make sure I go to the self serve line even if it’s longer.

    That was a great watch.

And also makes me realize, you could start a nice side hustle on here rekeying barrels for $50 or something a door if you had a wafer kit and a test subject or two. I'm tempted to get an old fuel door barrel and old tailgate barrel to see how to pop 'em both apart and make them key-ambiguous.

Here's one with the same bezel as the fuel door key. Just make sure you're careful removing that bezel, as it appears that's the only thing holding the lock internals in place -- so it needs to be in good shape to go back on.

I know the front cap needs to be removed I just need to buy a new one first. Because I'll probably ruin the cap when taking it off

I know I definitely can do it but without a gator tool it'll be hard and with no new cap it'll be even harder.

I'd be surprised if that cap is available as a separate part. If you do find it, post a link so we have a resource.

EDIT: I stand corrected. Caps of all kinds are available. You can even buy tumbler kits. Nice!

The cap this site lists as "Face cap for door lock" doesn't look like it's the correct part for the door lock they list right below it. The cap looks like it's for the fuel door. Might be worth a call.

That does look very similar but the tabs on the side are different. Edit after reading the description it's for the fuel lock. It says "Toyota Face Cap for Door Trunk Gas Tank Lock"

My 03 doesn't have a lock on the fuel door and I've wanted one since I got the truck. The ones without the lock have a spring that keeps them closed. I'll take a photo of mine tomorrow, would you mind taking a photo of yours with the fuel door open? I'm curious if it's just the door, spring, and liner that needs to be changed. Probably the hardest part to find will be a fuel door in the right color, unless your Tundra happens to be Phantom Silver.

This is disappointing but I don't think I can get the face cap off without cutting it. I tried prying it up and it moves so little it would probably take me a few hours of prying to get it off without breaking my screwdriver. I'm still gonna try prying it off with a screwdriver I don't care for instead so I can use more force. Will do it on Thursday.

I have a spare new door if you want it, with the keyhole. They are still available from Toyota, I ended up with 2 hoping the 2nd didn’t have the hole. You gotta get it painted or DIY though, comes primed black. I had one done already in 056 white for my truck.

I’ll try to remember to get some photos tomorrow.

They were a couple years ago. I'm not so sure they still are now.

They are that's how I got mine. I got it a week ago. Part number 77305-0C012. Toyota still sells a lot of parts for the 1st gen.

It’s possible. There are three tabs that need to be bent out of the way. Might require a bit of force but I was able to do it successfully.

I feel like I looked a while back and wasn't having any luck but I looked up your part number and it even looks like you can get it from Amazon at the moment

I replaced mine a couple years ago but I just used the hinge portion so I didn't have to get the door repainted.

I’d honestly just put a dummy cylinder in there, and install one of those magnetic push-and-click cabinet latches. I just had to replace one in my shop. That way it looks like it’s locked, but the magnet holds the door shut, and when you get to the pump, just press in on the door to get it to pop out enough to pull on it.

I'm trying to think of other cars I’ve owned with similar gas doors, maybe it’s possible to harvest parts off of. Maybe it was my GTI? Or the 535? One of the cars out of the last 20 or so I’ve owned had a push-to-pop fuel door.

Here's mine without the lock. Looks like it's just a normal hinge, a metal clip on the door, and a plastic tab on the inner shroud. Ignore all the dirt, the rain hasn't managed to wash all the dust off the truck yet.

    IMG_0115.jpg IMG_0116.jpg

The clip is only attached with a single screw.

The interior structure of the door (like the skeleton mounted to the back of the door) is physically different between locking and non-locking. Ignoring the later non-locking years have the little finger indent/provision, they lack the gas cap holder structure the locking years have (which pisses me off).

That said, for reference only, I looked in the explodeds and can tell you the following, at least for my 2006 AC which should also jibe with the RC (non-stepside, of course, stepside door is round):
    • The later-year door p/n with the little finger divot is 77305-0C030
    • The plastic cup with the little knob included is 77290-0C030
    • The knob alone is 77367-35010
    • The clip tha mounts to the inside of the door is 77366-35030 and the torx bolt holding it in is 90148-60044
    • The two bolts holding the door into the bedside are 90153-A0002
If anyone with an earlier year wanted to tinker, OR if you look at the inside of your fuel door and find theres both (1) a hole to mount the retention clip and (2) a hold to put the ball stud knob thingy, you may want to tinker with the ideal of figuring out a way to make the two work.

I'd like to swap the door and the inner parts so I have a lock if that's at all possible. Just need to see a picture of the inside of a locking fuel door.

The lack of a place for the gas cap is annoying as my tether snapped and I don't feel like replacing the whole gas cap. I did come across these earlier when searching for gas cap related stuff. 3D printed gas cap holder for the non locking doors.

    https://www.apolloinnovate.com/products/toyota-tundra-00-06-gas-cap-holder

I have no association with them, but I'll give it a shot at less than $20.

I swear someone on here swapped the door, but maybe it was only the guts (skeleton on the back) of the door. Which I want to do.

Thanks, looks like it really is just a matter of swapping out the door and the inner plastic shroud. Time to start looking for a matching door with a lock.
