Some stuff
nicely done. i like the choice for the HAM mount. where did you put the rest of the unit? pressurized h2o in the backseat? powertank over compressor. where did you find the bed rail mounts? make them yourself?

you've given me a couple of ideas.

I have a lot of installation write ups I need to transfer over here from 'another Tundra forum on the Net', but I'm happy to answer specific questions before I get it all migrated. Photobucket did their thing, and can fuck off now, so it may take a little while. If you're really curious you can probably find a link to something chaotic in my signature here.

Thanks man! The body of the HAM is under the passenger seat. Since the speaker is kinda small and far from the driver, I ran a mini cable from the HAM body to the aux input of the truck stereo, so now the HAM plays through the truck speakers. I use a little Y-cable to play a phone and ham at the same time, so we can still listen to music. You just balance the audio from each source with their own volume controls.

Yeah, three of those kegs hold water and we have an extra one for beer. The whole thing is pressurized with the Nitrogen bottle, so it stays fresh like wine service at restaurants - plus, nitro beer on tap! (full disclosure, I have to finish the nitro tap and chiller in order for us to consider this system complete). The water runs to the bed of the truck by the tailgate, and we connect the hot water heater back there for warm trail showers.

The fun version - aka Drunk Engineering Episode 1

https://youtu.be/wLcuCXqM-Yw

The boring version

https://youtu.be/hB9o2D0ohvk

We decided to use pressurized nitrogen instead of CO2 or a compressor for a few reasons, but mostly it comes down to lightness of the overall package, no moving parts, and less reliance on electricity in the wild. It solves 4 things for us - it's a water pump, it's an air pump, it fills race shocks, it runs airtools. The only drawback is the need to fill on a regular basis, but since we know how much we use and how much we have left, we can plan to fill it (roughly after 3-4 trips). You can't plan when your compressor is gonna shit the bed, or your water pump, or the whole electrical system. It's also nice and quiet.

The rack for the RTT (if that's the bed rail mount question) was fabbed for us because we wanted it super low - AVID Offroad here in AZ did the fab. He has all the measurements and could Basically it rests on the bedside, and bolts into the factory rail system to keep it in place. We designed it to be easy to remove in case we need to use the truck as a truck, but it's been on for almost 2 years and we've never removed it - we use the RTT too often to bother taking it off.

IMG_6322.jpg.jpg

Thanks Sean! That's been the idea since the beginning - get her dirty and scratched up in the name of fun.

Hahahaha! Touché good sir...

Video seldom conveys the proper sense of speed - five minutes after this shot, she passed a big F250 that was going slow in the rain and called him a dumbass. I love my wife. :D

https://youtu.be/YCYcjOoAAs4

The best way to get all the horsepowers!

Yeah, the key for us has been the slow steady upgrade path - the used parts market is awesome for both buying and selling. The current suspension setup is our fourth version - hopefully last. LoL

The bed rack is low for a few reasons, but ultimately it came down to being the perfect height for us to mount an awning with an optional room off the side of the truck, and use it as a changing room in crowded campsites (which we go to maybe once or twice a year) or escape the rain, since we can get in and out of the RTT from under the awning. We can put the awning up on either side of the bed or over the tailgate.

The low mount height also helps offroad performance with a low center of gravity and is a bit more aerodynamic than the higher mounts. Bonus: it sort of acts like a tonneau cover - if you lock the tailgate, everything is however safe the tailgate lock is.

Hahahaha! That's totally true! I gotta remember that.

Thanks man! The Icon 3.0 with the secondary bypasses was something we reached out to @sdhq_offroad for assistance with. Icon doesn't suggest mounting the 3.0 with remote resi and the bypass with remote resi because, as you can see, there's not much room in there. Icon recommends using only one resi, so they offer either the 3.0 coilover with resi and a non-resi secondary without bypasses, or the 2.5 non-resi coilover with the remote resi bypasses as secondary.

We were just too dumb to listen and asked SDHQ if they could make it work - well, now it's offered as a kit from SDHQ for anyone that wants this combination and doesn't have a sway bar (if you wheel, that shit should already be in the recycle bin). As far as I know the setup is only available through them since there are some custom pieces in it.

We went with this setup because we didn’t want to go full width LT and also it’s still Lisa’s daily driver. We like rock crawling as much as high speed desert blasts, and it’s a shitload of fun to run ‘Jeep Only Trails’ in a Tundra.

We've only had this complete combo in the dirt hardcore twice, but we're in love. It's totally adjustable, the zones inside the 3.0 work perfectly with the zones in the bypass and you can fine tune the whole thing like crazy. We run Caddy soft on the street and depending on what we're doing in the dirt, can run soft and slow or hard and fast. Spin a few (ok, 10) knobs on the front and rear, and off you go. We keep a log book in the truck of our preferred settings for different terrains.

Here's some more detailed pics.

Here was the first round of updates for Komodo. Lisa had a few requirements before we agreed to buy the Tundra, "It has to look mean, sound mean, and go mean. I want a loud exhaust, some lift and bigger tires. And I want it to be fast enough to backup the look and sound."

We did some homework before talking to the dealer and had a list of things we wanted them to do upon purchase.

_originally posted 10/10/2014_

The truck:

2014 Magical Grey Metallic Double Cab SR5 Upgrade Package 5.7L Flex Fuel 4x4 TRD

damn that's a long name

We originally tried NOT to buy a TRD since we knew we were going to build it up into what we want anyway, but there was a mix-up when the dealer went to get the truck - it was a TRD. We bought it anyway since they basically gave us the TRD stuff free because we didn't want it.

Reasons for the Tundra:

Regular daily driving a couple days a week for commute
Tow vehicle for our car (track), sportbikes (track), and horses (trail)
Off-road for camping and general hooning
Long road trips

Everything has actually been installed since two weeks after we bought the truck, but I'm finally getting around to posting decent pics.

BAMuffler budget system without the resonator installed. So far we've decided we don't need it.
TRD Cold Air Intake
Bilstein 5100 in the front on the top ring
1" spacer in the rear (I forgot I had asked for this before deciding to get the Bilsteins)
KMC Slides in 20x8.5 +10 offset
Nitto Terra Grapplers in 275/65-20 (I'll probably go thicker before too long. I had shied a way from a smaller rim with more rubber at first for towing reason, but I really feel like there's not enough rubber for serious offroading on these 20s)

Unfortunately we were so busy before hand that I never even ran the power for the CB to the battery so we actually never used it. But I did get the antenna installed and wanted to share pics of that for anyone that is thinking of a clean way to mount a short firestick.

Keep in mind though - THERE IS NO SPRING on this mount. The only flex gained in this install comes from the plastic flap over the rail slat hole (or whatever it's called).

Pictures will explain it better:

ziptied a wrench in place from beneath with 3-4 extensions on it to reach the underside of the hole where the antenna bolt passes through from beneath:

IMG_1204.jpg

I didn't take any shots from above while I was working on it, but basically I taped the washers onto the bottom of the antenna and screwed it onto the mounting bolt that was sticking up from below inside the slot held in place by the ziptied wrench. I just turned the antenna as tight as I could against the wrench below.

IMG_12042.jpg

IMG_12043.jpg

IMG_12044.jpg

IMG_12045.jpg

After the antenna was nice and snug, I measured the cover plate and used a step bit to put a hole in it for the antenna to pass through. This little plastic cover is the only flex you're going to get out of the antenna, but it did survive the trip including multiple pinstripes on the narrow Broken Arrow trail and hauling ass through the Cinders bouncing us all to hell and back.

I ran the antenna cable along the inner bed wall over the wheel well and forward the hole under the driver's side seat, just behind the driver's seat. Cut a X in the carpet there and passed the antenna up and velcro'd the CB underneath the driver's seat. Not easy access for changing channels or anything, but for our purposes it should be fine (oh yeah, our use was zero because I didn't finish running power). Besides, we'll probably change up to HAM for our next trip since that seemed most popular. Or FRS or whatever it was that osidepunker loaned us the handheld for. I think we'll just mount an amp and antenna for a handheld unit so we can have the best of both worlds. Powerful broadcast when in the truck, and portability when not.

hahaha! thanks man. The rear is stock leafs with 1" block for a little lift, and Icon Omega bypasses with piggyback resis.

All my buddies give us shit for running stock leafs, but so far we've been able to control them pretty well with the bypasses, and don't have either a saggy ass from running springs that are too progressive, nor a harsh ride from running a spring pack that's too preloaded for expedition weight. If she bucks too much on a particular trail, I just dial in more compression and rebound damping with the clickers.

At this point, we're waiting for Icon to release their complete RXT package. I went over to SDHQ yesterday and they showed me their current project Tundra that has Deavers with 400 lb preload and the Icon RXT bypass shocks. As a fan of application specific solutions, we're just waiting to see how the spring pack looks from Icon when they release it late this year or early next.

That is a great spot. I'd use it if I didn't have a topper. Didn't know there was a hole under the driver seat. I need to look for that.

Not FRS, APRS. Super handy. Highly recommend getting a unit with that capability.

I got the 600lb Deavers from them but I carry more weight in the back than you. Really happy with how they run. Not too much speed stuff up here but may make a few desert trips this winter. We'll see how they go.

Yeah, I should put a disclaimer on these first several posts that they're from a few years ago as we were building up the truck. I'm trying to migrate our entire three-year-old build thread from another forum so people can see the install instructions I wrote, now that photobucket phucked all the photo links...

I'm stoked to hear that. What shocks are you using with them? Any time you want to come down to AZ or southern UT or the CA desert, hit me up! We ahve trips planned about once a month somewhere in the southwest.
