2006 Tundra Rust

Hello! I have this 2006 Tundra and Im worried about the rust on the frame. There are some areas I am concerned about but no obvious holes or frame rot. Let me know what you think!

 

Yeah, that's pretty fucked. And it's '06 so doesn't qualify for recall. You pictured one important spot, 2nd pic, that frame stiffener, you can clearly see the steel has already delaminated. You know the other places to check, right? If not, READ HERE.

Meanwhile, is this a hole thru the frame? This is one of the spots we see frames snap, on driver's side. There's a link to pics of a frame in pristine shape that snapped in that spot.

If you haven't bought this truck, walk away. If you have bought this truck, I recommend doing everything in your power to return it! That's some bullshit right there.

You can get a few more years on that, I'd bet. It won't be much fun to work on as far as shocks, steering ends and ball joints though. Mine is worse than that.

You’re just now noticing this rust? How long have you owned it? Not good from the looks of it.

Start looking over your power steering, brake and fuel lines for similar rust because now is the time to protect them from further corrosion or face potential leaks like me.

We think its bad, the frame stiffener in the back, is totally delaminated and the frame is pooched out, this is a strengthening brace, and its weakened, so the frame is weakened. This is bad um'kay
The sway bar link is rusted thru, the thin end where the threads are often times rusts smooth thru and the sway bar end link pops the top off after rust starts eating thru the necked down part of the bar link end. You will need new sway bar end links.
You will also need a LOT of rust converter and a lot of hopes and prayer to hope this frame makes it out of its aggressive cancer stage. Its going to take lots of radiation (rust converter) and likely multiple chemo treatments (more rust converter) and then some bed rest (coating with an epoxy paint to create a hard shell over the frame) or keep a crap ton of rust inhibitor on the frame like many people up north use.

I have been under worse that were on the road
I have seen them fall apart with less rust than that too.
Cross your fingers, hit it hard with chemo and radiation, and hope you can get that cancer under control before it kills its host.

 

That's just to take care of the stuff you can see. What about the fully boxed sections?

New vehicles are pretty steep these days 4$,$$$+ along with the insurance to cover them.

Just saying.

If a vehicle is capable of getting you to work, especially if its paid off, then it's a winner.

Yeah I mean… it’s in bad shape 4sho. Inside the frame is gonna be worse than what you see on the outside. Inside rails are always worse. Seen plenty of frames rust out from the inside out boxed tuning that held water/salt/chemicals and one day it’s a flexi-flyer bending like a pretzel. Then you start seeing holes pop thru, as the rust eats the frame from the inside out.

 

I’d get an air hose and blow the rust out from the inside of the rails up front after getting a wire brush in there to take off the flakes. You’ll have enough rust that you can add aluminum powder and make thermite.

 

DAMMIT, and I just threw the 2 or 3lbs of mine in the trash!

 

I use RP-320 on my undercarriage/frame. Maybe look into it for your truck. I’ve been doing mine every fall (the past 4-5 years), to try and keep the undercarriage strong. This year I did the spring and fall.
Cost wise, it’s about 4-5 cans to do the truck, roughly $50.

Sorry about that. Yes that is the stuff I use.

 

I would say put it out to pasture but it looks like its been out in one for a while.
