A car / truck should never be considered a status symbol. I have seen people with range rovers, bmw’s, corvettes, etc living in studio apartments because their car payments were so high. And even so I would never consider a tundra a status symbol no matter what trim.

Modern day status symbols of wealth seem to generally be really expensive things folks don't need but buy anyway, but with zero down financing and lease options how wealthy does one really have to be to look wealthy?

I don't know but you bring up a point, I didn't buy the Tundra because I really needed a new truck. I got seduced by the technology packages on it. I have had some situations with it especially from Chevrolet and Dodge truck owners. Lucky for me that it has a dash camera on it. I would never finance a truck with a $1000-$1500 dollar a month truck payment. Things have gotten out of hand inflation wise, but Trucks really are not worth the value unless you can depreciate them with business expenditures. Otherwise buy a basic truck SR5 pack or below and forgo the limited and the likes. Depends on everyone's financial situation, but I have seen people literally spend 90 percent of their take home pay for a truck. This makes no sense unless you have, I would say 10-20 times the financed amount of the truck purchase in cash, stocks/ bonds, 401k, other assets then I would not finance anything that you couldn't pay off and not take a huge hit in net worth. I learned a long time ago from flipping hundreds of rides that it isn't worth it.

 

38k for 22 platinum, I don't want to know what my 22 SR5 would be, I did try to trade in for a hybrid limited and was at 46k but this was like in 23, I wanted 49k cuz mine was 54k sticker and it had like less 5k at time

 

Well now at my local dealer they are giving 6-8k off sticker so you might be okay. I have noticed though that the MSRP went up roughly 10 percent over the previous year model though.

 

I want to agree but it is so wrong , I know many people who think that any new vehicle with price tag over 40k is status symbol, so basically status symbol is any half ton pick up. And considering prices on rents now it will soon become status symbol on its own, lol

I was hearing of others having the same issues with trying to trade in their 22/23. It had me feeling like my 22 platinum was a bad purchase as well. But I do have to say that I came to terms with the situation and realized that I shouldn’t be worried about it with the whole engine recall and all. My truck had so many recalls over the coarse of the 2 years owning it and having a great service manager made that easier to swallow.

That being said, I purchased my 22 platinum in June of 22 and paid MSRP for it while I was seeing 15k+ markups at other dealerships. I was happy with my purchase and after getting out of my 19 limited I still had little to no regrets. I was at my dealership getting a new windshield installed, and while waiting around I was talking with a salesman about trading mine in. I told him that I knew I’d be upside down based on what others were saying and that I didn’t even want to waste my time. Well, I checked anyway and it was the last day of the month so they were motivated to make a deal happen. They offered me 56k, which was my payoff, for my truck and offered me MSRP on a new 24 TRD PRO. Anyways, I kept my same payments, didn’t put any money down and I walked out of that dealership with a new truck. Now I don’t have to deal with the recall, which was giving me anxiety as we got closer to the fix coming out. The salesman told me that because they were so motivated the manager gave me the 56k for my truck when the appraisal only valued my truck at 46k. I had 18k miles on it and I knew that I was getting a great deal on my truck and even the price for the new truck.

overall I’d say that if you want out of your truck you’re gonna need to find a dealership that has a bunch of stock of whatever vehicle it is that you want to buy, and wait for the end of the month when they’re extra motivated to sell a vehicle and that would be your best option to get a good deal. Also, I’ve had great success when trading in vehicles by asking for more on my trades. More times than not they were willing to do that since they knew I was serious about making the deal happen.

 

From my experience with 3 local dealers (MN) they dont care about end of the month sales since all Tundras are moving as soon as they arrive, except 2wd. But that means for us trading in vehicles, we get a good value no matter when it happens. Interesting to hear that is different around the country!

 

glad it worked out for you, they just played the move money around game, instead of 10K off the new truck they gave you 10K more on your trade. That likely helped with taxes as well.

but don't be fooled, your paying a lot more money over time with loans, etc and your still upside down.

I get what you’re saying considering I used to sell cars. There’s no way to move money around on the new vehicle when I’m paying MSRP especially on a TRD PRO, they usually mark those trucks up over MSRP. They would not discount a TRD PRO 10k. There was nothing rolled into the new purchase off of my trade in. This deal basically zeroed out my current loan and it effectively acted like I was buying the new truck without a trade in. Now in terms of interest, yes I will be paying more over time since I didn’t put anything down. But that I’m okay with since Toyota financial will be sending me a refund on my last payment and I will be applying that to my principal on my new truck.

 

I'm from MN as well. I had to drive to Illinois to trade-in my 3rd gen for a sprinter. Trade-in and new vehicle pricing were both better at the ziegler dealership than at local MB dealers.

For my last 2 vehicles, I found myself buying from neighboring states. I bought my last 3rd gen in Kenosha, WI. The good thing about it is the vehicles are almost broken in when I get back home. I just drive home late at night and vary my speed.

I just bought a 2024 Limited in TX near where I live. It was a 1 year old lease return CPO. I also was shopping new and was willing to buy new if the pricing worked out.
There are deals out there right now, large discounts - easily up to $10k+ off MSRP for new.

I have never seen so many Tundras on lots before so go end of month and they surely will deal.

I had my insurance company total loss our 2015 Chevrolet SS due to lack of collision repair parts like a front bumper cover. They valued it at $37,596.12 with 65,000 miles on it. I only paid $46,600 back in June of 2015 for it.

Toyota has nothing on that kind of retained value.

That didn’t stop me from buying a new 2024 Land Cruiser to replace the SS though.
