I don’t know if I’ve used Shell gas in this truck. We don’t have many, here, anymore. Does Shell have a subsidiary or sister brand that uses their formulation?

No idea if other gas stations are using the Shell product. Frankly, I don't suspect that Shell gas is the issue. I was merely pointing out that the problem "could" be something unrelated to the fuel gauges. I would never have thought that fuel additives could cause this sort of problem.... but they have in the past. I doubt they are now but who knows?

Far too common to be one brand of gas. It's either a software issue they can't figure out, or an issue with the sensor.

Oh, I don’t believe the fuel did it/does it. I was just curious if it had been linked to other fuel brands using the Shell formulation. Did their additive gel in the cold climate or was there a chemical reaction with the level feelers/sensors in the tank (for lack of a better term)….or?? What was the reasoning? Sounds ludicrous, but there had to be a good reason for them shelling out the settlement.

This was quite a while ago (2002?) so I don't recall the specifics of the problem, nor can I Google anything meaningful.
I believe that Shell updated one of the additives that they put in the gas and that resolved the issue. They were on the nut to fix some cars but the problem was resolved in most of the affected vehicles by running through a couple of tanks of the updated Shell product.

We just got our 2024 Tundra SR5 TRD, wife parked it in our drive way and went out next morning to find the gas gauge was full she text me and said "Thanks for filling my truck up last night." As I did not... we just learned about this problem...less than 1000k miles... HELP
$50+K OFF road truck that can't park on a Hill! FN lame!

Unfortunately it's a common problem. If you can take it to the dealer while it's showing the issue, that's best. If not, take a picture showing the gauge and mileage. Do the reset and take another showing the same mileage with the updated gauge reading. Hopefully Toyota will issue a fix soon. Hopefully...

I had it happen again to me sometime yesterday, not exactly sure when, it was only a couple gallons low when it reset, or it didn't fully reset, im not entirely sure. I didn't catch it until I was headed home on the highway last night and saw my tank average MPG was sitting around 21-22 since I had been driving mostly highway yesterday evening. The "turning off in drive and shifting to park" method did not work, however the option to set the odometer to the actual odometer and not the trip setting, holding the odometer button down and turning the truck on without starting it did reset the gauge. Gauge dropped a little and my distance to empty went from 388 down to 340 or something like that. It has happened sporadically and seems not to be fixed, last update they pushed was supposed to fix it but no luck. Its not as frequent as it used to be, my biggest concern is parking my truck for a few days and not remembering I didn't leave it with a full tank and running out of gas because the truck still thinks it has a good bit left.

I feel like this should be a bigger concern for Toyota and NHTSA because it can lead to your engine stalling from running out of gas when you think there's still a quarter tank or more left. I've never pushed it to see if it will still trip the low fuel indicator when it gets low or if it will think everything is fine til its not. Thankfully my driving habits are pretty consistent along with my MPGs and I'm pretty good about resetting my trip odometer when I fuel up, so I know something is wrong.

So if the wife drives it out of gas cause of faulty gauge I assume Toyota will replace the engine after it takes a shit!

Thanks for the info on the reset, but should not have to do that constantly! So frustrating!

After 14K miles and over a year old, it finally happened to me. I filled up at a Buc-ees (I always use Costco gas, but this time I needed fuel and was near a Buc-ees). After driving another 190.7 miles I still had a full tank and a RANGE of 465 miles! I thought that Buc-ees gas was something special! :D

I have taken three short trips today adding another 50 miles and it still show 7/8 full. It has been over 100 degrees here, so not sure if the heat has any impact on this.

I took my Tundra to dealership service 2 weeks ago and they did the 2022 TSB update to my 2024 and i laughed and i said you are wasting my time and the technicians time. After the TSB i went and parked on a slight incline and gauge went full again so i brought it back for them to reset it and document the TSB didn't work. They looked it into more and they said the TSB didn't work for the 2024's and Toyota is working on a fix for the 2024 so i will have to wait for the updated "Reflash" are the 2022s and 2023s still impacted? seems like the TSB didn't work for anyone.

TSB did not work on my ‘23. I let them try, as the young service writer had never heard of the issue, was very concerned about and kept my truck for 4 days. Could Not Replicate the issue “…threw a TSB on that sucker” and called it fixed. He was so proud when he called, until he could tell I didn’t share the same confidence in the fix…mind you, they never could replicate the issue (SURPRISE!) to begin with. The first time I brought it for the issue, they put a few gallons of gas in, saw the gauge move and said “Gauge working as expected” and brought it back around to me “Here you go. It’s working fine.”
I’ve been keeping gas receipts with pics of gauge when it happens. I’m sure focus on all the little “piddly” issues was redirected to the engine recall and will forever be “characteristic of the model” for ‘22/“23.

It’s almost as if Toyota’s attitude about the gen 3 is if you wanna drive their truck bad enough, you just need to be willing to accept some of these types of issues.

Yesterday after 17K mi. and 13 mo's of the at least monthly "Reset To Full" scenario on my '23 Lim, it did something new. Filled the tank when it was at half full on the gauge, drove out of the station and noticed it was still on 1/2 Full ( after I just put in 16 gal ). Did the "shut off in drive" routine and it reset to Full as expected. Dont know where the heck that came from !!!

I’ve had the TSB done when it first came out. Seemed good for a while but it happened on a road trip towing a trailer last month and then again yesterday.

Going to use @24TundraTRD suggestion of taking a before and after reset photo as I’ve never been able to “prove” it to my dealership.

I have tried to use pictures with prior issues and they won't go for it. Pictures can be used as evidence in most of life to show something, but not with Toyota. My navigation doesn't work in the left side of the DIC most of the time, just shows a blank screen rather than a compass heading. I have shown the Service Writer numerous pictures of a completely BLANK screen and when I pick it up they say, "we can't verify the problem".

    Good luck...

Ok my 2022 tundra did lemon law on fuel gauge. 2024 tundra same problem. This time Toyota tech came to dealership n they duplicated the faulty readings. Had truck for 9 days. They decided to replace the whole dashboard combiner. Will see how this goes. If not then next one is strike 3 and lemon law applies again. And the trucks are getting cheaper.

I don't know exactly how the lemon laws work, but it seems like you had to show some significant problem (fuel gauge not reading correctly) that the dealer acknowledged, tried to fix and couldn't...at least three times? Is this correct?

Had it happen twice in the last week. Only happened 1 other time in nearly 50k. And that time it reset just out of the station. I had to do the odometer method and then the last one it did it about 5 miles leaving the station. Ironically every time it’s done it I had just filled up at Buc-es’s.

It’s a little irritating. Mainly in a situation of a shared vehicle, or a rarely driven vehicle, a work truck, etc. In my case it’s always shown less than what was actually in the tank, which is good. The case of it showing full after being parked on an incline (which has not happened to me) is where someone could get in some trouble.

This is what is happening to me. I am afraid I will run out of gas. When I reset my truck a couple days ago, it went from showing full to only 1/2 full. I knew it wasn't full, but didn't realize it was that far down.

Texas lemon law very easy. 3 tries then they buy it back at a small user fee based on when it was first reported to dealership and tried to be fixed n the mileage.

They now have 3 years of production Tundras with this problem and they are still TRYING THINGS to fix it. That’s not a very good engineering team in my mind. Fuel systems not that complicated or they made it too complicated.

How did you go about the lemon law process for the buyback? I’m interested in going this route.
