I had heard similar. I think it WAS hard to find them but maybe the supply has been more stable recently? i ordered from durable.parts.com and they were at my door 3 days later, I was a little surprised.

I was behind on this thread, yeah I got the idea from someone else, don't recall who. Just bent the tabs and put the new hinge on the old door then no painting required.

Long time no post... heres a few updates:

finished my topper, went with a GFC style build, both sides and back open up. I've really been enjoying the functionality.

    few odds and ends:
    mileage: 290,000
    IMG_6712.jpg
    IMG_6502.jpg
I also built this 3/4" plywood platform

took the truck on a 1,000 ish mile road trip recently and got 12.8 MPG in best case conditions:bananadance:

Little one is doing alright? I notice the balance bike in the pic, seems like only a couple of months have gone by since you were a proud new poppa, time flies I guess!

A few weeks ago I came across a great deal on a beat up first gen Tacoma ARB, I decided I would chop it up and make it fit my truck: this took a crazy amount of work, both ends of the bumper got cut off and I had to rebuild the end caps. It’s probably 20 hours of fab work all said and done. If I did this again I’d spend more time trying to find a 2nd gen Tacoma ARB, like the basils garage truck has.

I’m really pleased with the end product. It’s not perfect, but it fits and looks pretty good. The reason I did this and not a FGT specific bumper is that none of the available options look this good except maybe the BFF, but they’re very expensive and I believe there’s a long lead time. The iconic Australian style bumpers are by far my favoriteIMG_6866.jpg IMG_6902.jpg IMG_6877.jpg

I also built the skid plate which turned out nice. It’s 11 gauge steel (1/8”). I was curious on the strength but it seems fine since I can lift the truck on the skid plate:)

I also welded in spindle gussets and Eimkeith STR plates. I saw a guys FGT sitting in the boonies with a broken spindle. That looks like a PAIN to fix. Further reading shows that the first gen tacomas break spindles pretty routinely (I think the guys on TW bash their trucks a lot harder than us.)

I wish! I went to high school in Gillette for a little while. Lived just outside of Rozette. Worked at the TNT gun shop as a kid.
Spent most of my time in Riverton.
    Always loved it up there.
