I had made a base out of 2x4's that had slots to drop down the rear tires in and then run straps from anchor to anchor by the bed to hold the front of the bikes down. I was able to still close the tailgate with the front tires rear facing and turned sideways. It was maybe 2'x4' total and 6" high. Could easily lean it on a wall in the garage.

I have since bought a used 3 bike rack hitch mount to save from being in and out of the bed.

Have you tried a tailgate mat? those work pretty good. Unless you ride alot or have a wrap on your downtube, the mat will rub the paint off.

Tailgate mats or 1UP racks would be my choice. I currently use a Fox bike mat purchased on Amazon.

Tried and true solution here, used them for years on various trucks with no issue.

How many bikes are you needing to carry?

I'd do the bike mat like suggested multiple times (and it's what I have) before I'd go with that 4 bike rack that is just held in place. With the bed mat, you know they aren't going anywhere, and most have an access opening so you still have use of the rear view camera. Easy to use, stores without issue, only a few moments to set up (toss over tailgate, run straps under it, tighten straps. Then place bike, strap down. I do another strap or bungie to my forward tie downs to keep the bikes from bouncing)

I agree with the others on the tailgate pad.
I picked up the newest Raceface/Fox T3 which fits great on the Tundra and holds 5 or 6 bikes. The surface that contacts the tailgate has a faux fur material which is very soft and provided you don't throw it on a filthy truck and leave it there continuously hasn't created any hotspots over the past 4 or so months i've had it.
Another nice benefit is it allows a tonneau to fold down meaning you can lock the tailgate and there is no longer a risk of theft or having to remove it should you need to secure the bed.

I had the same setup for a couple of years. It is an erector set approach and is not a quick setup for throwing it in...takes a few to set it up each time in and out. Worked well enough but still need to tie down/secure the bikes. When not in use, dominates the bed space if you don't pull it out. If using something like this again, I'd probably just build it out of PVC myself.
The mat for the tailgate is much faster...
