That one got me good

 

Installed the 3rd 4r/ 1st gen taco snorkel. Took a lot longer than I anticipated. I had to heat it up to clear the passenger door. I’m sure my measurements were a little off.

I used 3”x3”elbow for stock intake to 3” flex tubing to 3” flex coupling to snorkel adapter tube. Sealed everything with clear outdoor sealant.

I only went with the snorkel due to having tube bumper leaving the stock intake exposed to the elements.

I think snorkels look like shit. So I was thinking of doing a flush brake duct instead. Cut out the hole where the antenna is cause I broke mine.

 

Would be cool to see these snorkeled trucks doing water crossings.

 

I agree. I kinda regret doing it now tbh. I should have the done the hidden snorkel behind the fender. Cheaper and easier.

 

Having a tube bumper and my wheel wells cut. Puddles of water would get me nervous. I did notice the air intake temp was lower compared to being a stop. About 10 degree difference.

Gonna take more than an intake snorkel to deep water cross. Essentially have to snorkel every air entry point and vent on the truck. Diff, trans, xfer, exhaust, etc. and even then, your likely pulling some water into some driveline seals as they get hot when off-roading and then the sudden cool down of splashing through a river creates a vacuum effect that draws the water in through them. Most snorkel to get the intake up into clean air when running dusty trails. There are some cool videos of the aussies doing deep water fording.

 

Just a follow up. With a couple commutes and several instances where I would always hear the clunk... it's quiet. I'm calling it a win.
Weirdest thing because your ass in the seat/ears/hands on the wheel detectors tell you it's up front, or at least under you.
Like front susp, or trans mount or cross member, or even engine mounts. And with a truck that's been in an accident like mine, it could be body mounts or panels... who knows.
If this stops working I will attempt the skid button tip wear pad anti squeak install.

Yeah I like to poke fun. I'm not immune to doing things to my truck just cause they look cool.

I just did a river crossing this last weekend that without a doubt submerged my axles. Not uncommon, and not for long enough that I'm concerned about differentials.

 

I love that truck lol anything with that much character and 100% see's max usage is dope

Yeah the rear diff breather mod is so cheap idk why anyone wouldn’t do it if you haven’t. Source your own parts off Amazon. Ive done it to every single Toyota I’ve owned.

 

I should do it. I know I shouldn't go based off what other people do but...the Forest Service, BLM and rancher's trucks out here are driving roads that often have stream crossings. None of them have a single mod for this. It's just how they use their trucks, and aside from burly tires, they do it without modifications.

I'd say "it seems to work out fine for them", because it does, but they all swap out vehicles before they hit 200,000 miles. For those of us who need them to last at least another 100,000, things like that might matter.

 

Wouldnt hurt to raise the front diff & tcase breathers either.

Nice, I need one for my 2007 Sequoia (still 1st gen) but no Antenna. I bought a generic one of Amazon, but haven't test fitted it yet.

 

ARB had a nice kit for this. Puts em both on the firewall as high as they'll go.

 

I’ve been in some fairly deep water in a couple of my jeep cj7’s and my 1991 ford ranger 4x2 (i don’t have that ruck anymore). I didn’t have snorkels on any of those vehicles, but i did have raised and relocated vent hoses on every component. One my CJ7s had a 2.5” and 32” tires. I was driving through fairly large creek. The water came up just over the top of my belly button…while i was sitting in the driver seat! I really thought my jeep was going to be lost forever in the river, but for some reason it kept chugging along. My other 7 had 37” tires and water was over the top of its tires. And i was just plain mean to my ranger. I drove through a flooded road and the water came just over the top of the headlights.

Pro tip: if you don’t have a snorkel and you just have to drive through deep water to escape a volcano or something, drive the vehicle through the water backwards. The rear of the vehicle will create a wake and subsequently push all the water away from the front end of the truck. Water might be as much as a full foot more shallow where the air intake is.

 

Got my OBD2 reader hooked up and downloaded the PID pack for $14.99. Works great. Just gotta make a new dashboard as this is the old one from my other truck

 

One side down. Need to trim the drive side flare and should be good.

Did you just remove the inner fender liner completely or cut it short and reattach?
