There's nothing wrong with the engine design. Plenty of power, reasonable economy. it's funny to watch the 2nd generation owning trolls try to come across as superior.

'23 Platinum owner here (first ever Toyota, time will tell if last), you can't ignore the engine failures and the recall impact on valuation. Way too early to say there isn't a design issue.

fwiw that’s what Toyota said they evaluated and reported to the feds, design checked out again and it’s a manufacturing problem

For my money , if it was a design problem, you would see a hell of a lot more actual failures, they have made how many gen 3 tundras now? 100s of thousands

Hey I just finished pulling a 30ft, 7000+ lb camper over 7200 miles on a trip out west. The truck did great, doesn't mean I'm not very concerned.

FWIW, I doubt any 2G owner is feeling good or superior about the plight of 3G owners. Maybe the few of you who can’t seem to manage your emotions when reading about the 3.4TT should start a “safe space thread” where you don’t have to read any opinions that might “trigger” you.

And if it’s just a manufacturing issue, why the new bearings? And why are the failures still happening long after Toyota identified “matching debris” as the culprit? You’re telling me you honestly believe Toyota can’t figure out how to clear out machining debris on multiple assembly lines? I don’t believe that for a second, which is why I’m on the sidelines on replacing my current truck with a gen 3 until I know the problem has been fixed and reports of failures dry up.

And Toyota said the issue was bounded to a specific production time frame and production plant. Yet engines are failing outside that time frame...again, until we see teardown of the "new" engines there is no way of knowing if something wasn't changed. Component selections are part of "design"...do the new engines have all the exact same components? Nobody here knows.

I get it, they are looking at acceptable failure rates is my guess

and fyi, the bearing part number was replaced

My 22 1794 is on the recall list but so far I haven’t received the letter from Toyota. So far my truck has been bullet proof with no issues after 51,000 miles. Is Toyota planning to replace all the recall motors even if they haven’t blown? My guess is that they won’t replace the motor until it blows.

That’s the whole reason for the recall , to replace the engine “ before “ it blows .

So far, no credible sources have any better theories on what may be causing these failures.

So yes, believe it or not, poor machining and debris could be the real issue here. Yes, robots in both plants in Japan and Alabama screwed up machining and didn't check engines that they were producing... Until few hundred thousand units were made and installed into the new trucks.

I didn't believe it either until Ryan posted photos of the old short block he bought which was not milled correctly, holes were not drilled fully, and also had bunch of debris in it.

Maybe few of the parts they changed also could be beneficial...

But as you can see, all failures are absolutely random. I think what happens is piece of debris can get de attached inside of the engine and maybe get stuck in the bearings or maybe not - this is why it's all random and some engines go 100k miles while others 12k miles.

stop , stop, stop. We are all going to dump this shit and buy 2021s. The tundra will no longer be made and Toyota sucks now and is going out of business

The funny part is all of the wind noise in my truck is gone, probably stuffed by dirt, and I don't even notice the rear diff whistling anymore. Used to it

    And
Exactly what car care nut was talking about and all those still having issues post short block replacement. If it didn’t have metal shavings in the block before, it darn sure will spending a few weeks on the floor of that shop.

I’ve seen a more organized kindergarten art class…

Well said. I’m still not convinced the bad components in Japan didn't come from Alabama though. No QC review to production was mentioned in Japan, onlyAlabama.

Amazing how many armchair engineers are calling Toyota bald face liars saying they made up the bad machining to cover up a design flaw. I mean it’s Toyota….not Boeing.

Just a general statement as a Toyota fanboy that is new to the Tundra club. I hope that Toyota continues to work with owners of the 3rd gen trucks, but even with replacing engines, the hassle will probably make many owners sell. That might be good for everyone that has been complaining about the cost of new trucks. Maybe the Toyota tax will take a hit for a second and allow people who work for a living to buy the truck they wanted but could not afford. I’m trying to look at the bright side. Hopefully, Toyota nips this in the bud, and moves on, but there will be many customers that will still be the ones to endure trips to the dealer, loaner trucks and delays.

lol this is what I’m doing. Lots of people trying to spend a bunch of time and money heading off the problem even though it’s pretty clear it’ll either happen to you or won’t.

I’ll stick with whatever oil change intervals Toyota tells me to do and worry about a blown engine if/when it happens. Changing the oil three times before 5000 miles? Meh!
