Mine has only done it once, and it was parked nose up at a pretty significant angle.

I was on level ground parking lot at a business. Which adds to the frustration to troubleshoot this issue. Maybe the fuel tank was moved in 2022.

Absolutely. I'm not defending it in any way. A fuel gauge is a basic function of an automobile. This is rather unacceptable. I'm just trying to cut the dealership itself a little slack. If they don't get guidance from Toyota, I'm not sure what they can do. Hopefully toyota can come up with something.

Opened a TIS on mine (finally) and kept it a few days. Had a TSB performed (software update) for it and they exclaimed they “fixed that sucker”. Nope. Not as often as it was, but still resetting itself to full after parking on a slight incline with 3/4 tank.

I don’t blame the dealerships at all. Mine has been very helpful. This is at the HQ level n design teams n engineering.
They either really don’t have a fix after 3 years or it’s too expensive and they are going to play chess w owners. It’s a darn gas tank. Not very complicated. And we think they can fix the V6 turbo engine mess!

That software update was for something else with the gauge cluster NOT related to this gas guage issue. Dont let them lie to you.

The one I'm referring to does. T-SB-0022-23 "Abnormal Fuel Gauge Operation and/or Low Oil Pressure Gauge Reading" It is, however, specific to 2022 year models. This update was supposed to be applied to newer models. It either isn't happening, or it's not the solution. With people saying they're still having the issue after the "fix", it's probably the latter.

Got a new mailer today from dealership. Thinking up new revenue streams. Now THEY RECOMMEND for $120 a wheel alignment every 10k or once a year. Wow. I have 14 year old cars that have never had one. All the sudden the cars go out of alignment in 10k. Drive level surface on hwy, see if car goes straight, keep an eye on tread wear. Done saved $120.

Had this happen yesterday. Leaving boat ramp, I noticed I had a full tank. I was sure I had closer to a half. Made me worry some tweaker poured something in there.

I tried the turn off in park, but that didn't do anything. I just put a bit over 10 gallons in, so I know it was misreading.

2024 Limited TRD. I think build was Oct 23. About 7,000 miles and I've launched boat close to a dozen times without the glitch.

Yeah. Dealer said I had all the updates. Since I had reset it, it wasn't acting up so they really sid t do anything. Maybe it's at least documented that I reported it. Pretty disappointing. Otherwise, (with the tailgate fixed) it's a pretty nice truck.

Try this for the reset. Make sure u get paperwork or emails from dealer or it will hurt you w lemon laws.
I took picture of my dashboard showing full, then did reset n it showed only 1/4 which was correct. Sent those to dealer. Now next Thursday a Toyota tech coming through and wants my truck overnight to download data. Pretty dumb distraction if u ask me. They know I’ll lemon law this one too. They don’t need r trucks to troubleshoot this 3 year ongoing fuel gauges that don’t work. Your dashboard pictures will show 4 important points —time n ODO n fuel gauge n DTE between the pics only taken minutes apart.

It’s shut off in Drive (one push leaving ignition On), wait 10 secs til you see the gauge reset, restart and drive away.

Thank you. I tried this 4 or 5 times with different wait times, but probably not 10 seconds. I also saw something about an odometer reset method. Hopefully I won't need to try it again.

Very Interesting. First I’ve heard that. To clarify, The shut off in Drive method doesn’t reset the fuel gauge on digitals?

I was able to get the shut-off-in-drive method to work on my 24. What worked was the odometer hack: get into odometer mode, shut off, hold ODE button, power button twice with foot off brake to go into accessory mode, keep holding ODE till gauge resets to accurate. I find myself doing this once or twice a week now.

Everyone needs to go to NHTSA website and file hazard complaint. 3 years and engineers don’t have a fix. Or they hv a fix n it’s too expensive like the engines they are fixing.
Explain that going down highway at 65 mph and truck shuts off for an empty tank how high of an accident risk do you become. Especially at night time.
    Do you hv steering?
    Do you have braking?
    Do your lights turn off?
    What will transmission do?
When towing you are really guessing when the empty tank will get you.
Using odometer is not the answer on a $65-70k vehicle.

had just over 3/4 of a tank and shut my vehicle on a very slight incline. when i turned it on the fuel gauge showed full. I went to the gas station and filled up and recorded the whole thing and it took 5.0 gallons. Booked appointment with dealer to have them look at it and plan to report to transport canada. Does the dealership service center ever find anything? or will they report no problems found?

I had already reset mine when I took it in. I was out of town when it happed and was towing a trailer, so I didn't want to risk it. When I did go they told me I had the latest software and they couldn't duplicate.

On a separate note, I have the 32 gal tank a d was just under 1/4 tank. So there should have been less that 8 gal in the tank. On fill up, it only took 22 gallons. Maybe they build in a little buffer on the guage? (When it works)

They didn’t with mine, when they kept it a few days to test (got a Tacoma loaner). They “threw a tsb update on that sucker”, but it didn’t do anything…at least there’s a TIS on record, now instead of just “customer states” and “could not replicate” on a regular service visit. It’s like Groundhog Day when I ask the service writer if there have been any updates on the fuel gauge, it is a known issue, I’m just asking if there has been any progress. Every one “I’ve never heard that, before. Do you want someone to take a look at it?” “Nah.”

Take pictures of the tank w incorrect readings. Then do the reset and take pictures. With mileage the same you have proof of 2 diff tank readings and time stamp of pictures. Hard to debate that. After 3 tries at dealership I went lemon law route and they bought the truck back. Love Texas!! Make sure your paperwork from dealer says could not fix or Toyota has no fix at this time.

I recall that in 2002 Shell gas was causing a problem with fuel gauges not reading correctly. The solution at the time was to try a different brand to see if the problem would disappear. Shell evidentially reformulated their fuel additives and that resolved the problem.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/fuel... is compensating car, though the tank is full.

"Shell Canada is compensating car owners for bad gas that has been damaging fuel gauges.
The company has received complaints about its gas which is causing fuel lights to blink empty even though the tank is full. The needles on the gas gauges swing back and forth randomly."

Bizarre question .... What brand(s) of fuel is everyone using? If you change your brand does the problem go away?

I use shell as it’s “top tier”.

only had this issue twice. If it happens again or more frequently I will try something else

Oh, that sounds great - “Black Gooey Crap” in your tank. Costco Top Tier here. IMO this Tundra “Reset to Full” problem is totally software related
