What do you guys think about these projector retrofits? They look pretty sick!upload_2024-7-10_15-54-15.jpgupload_2024-7-10_15-54-15.jpgupload_2024-7-10_16-2-0.jpg

They look out of place, too modern. It almost seems like you signed up to advertise headlights. This is the first post you chose, of all things 1st gen? To rep headlights?.

Its too much shit. No me gusta. My projectors have halo rings too and I didn't even bother plugging them in.

I think they'd be aight without that outline light or the TURD etched on the projector.

I don’t think DRL strips look good at all on these trucks. Largely due to the 2 piece turn signal design.

I have my DRL unplugged and run like this on overcast days. I really wish our DRL were just the tiny bulbs. That would be so convenient not having to toggle but now I'm just being a crybaby.

    1. What is your current setup?
    2. What is your budget?
    3. Are you looking to retrofit yourself?
    4. How much they want for those fugly ones you posted?

We've had a rash of them recently and yours seemed to be one.

There's a few threads a little further down about doing homemade projectors, but I can't remember offhand who's done them.

Currently I just have Baja squadrons for my fogs
im looking to open no more than $600
If I do a full retrofit id go through these guys. I would do something more sleek and something that looks Oem with the chrome housing and just a nice projector

There's quite a bit of info, including links to threads containing even more links, directly pointing to some of the builds others have done on here, starting in the "lighting" section of this thread: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

You gotta be careful with retrofit businesses. While I know they mean well, folks on this forum have gotten burned from no less than two different businesses with similar business models to what Sean (Wika, hence "SW lights", I'd guess) is offering up. This is in no way a slight on him, he may be knocking out the best f'n headlamps you can buy. He may be the most awesome, most stand-up guy ever, I cannot speak to that point, I've never done business with him. What I'd warn you of is other experiences people could share horror stories about other small-shop retrofitters, like:
    • Small quality defects, and what that means: You either live with it, or you're living w/o headlights while you pay to ship them back, then receive them. At least one of the two retrofitter services I've seen fuck 1st Gen owners over was putting out such shit quality light that one member gave theirs away to another member, and another sold for about 1/3 the cost and went with mini drop-in projectors and was far happier. One example: Say they get jostled in transit and that brakes something, or maybe it over-rotates or leaves something internally clocked wrong, or maybe leaves something floating ... that would really suck.
    • No or limited warranty / Future service needs: All bulbs die, eventually. Or ballasts/drivers. And lets face it, the quality of parts these days is utter shit compared to what it was 10, 20 years ago, especially with all this new tech, and companies trying to eek out the most profit possible with "acceptable" levels of defects. Small shops won't always warranty their work on custom pieces, or warranty for a very short period of time. Let's face it, even if they do, what happens if a driver dies, or one of those bulbs inevitably dies early? If you didn't retrofit it, and you aren't confident cracking it open and resolving the problem ... then what? Once again, you're without headlights and paying shipping at least one-way to have them fix their work.
    • Wild lead times: One of the two retrofitters that was a larger service built up a rep, then left customers hanging for weeks, months, and some folks ended up paying up, but never getting product. This is a risk you take, and if you're not close enough to knock on the door of their shop, then what? Better hope you're within the window.
It's clear Sean has been doing this for a couple of years, and I'd expect we'd have heard something bad at this point, the 1st gen groups are pretty well pollinated. If that's what you're hunting, and you don't want to bake open for your own retrofit, maybe it's for you. Just make sure you're going into this proposition with the right mentality about risks, and with a clear reality of what any inevitable defect or maintenance issue means to you, especially if this truck is your daily driver, and you don't keep a backup pair of housings on-hand.

I saw at least some pricing on one of the FB groups, it was in the 4-digit range. I imagine it has to be to realize even a small profit, and even with those high prices I can't imagine he's clearing a ton of $$$.

Where's @shifty` to chime in and link to the non-LED max lumens thread, the LED mini projector thread, and others?

Guess I'm playing Shifty today. Hard to fill his shoes.

Read these first and decide which is more appropriate for your goals:

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/amazing-1st-gen-headlamp-upgrade.127384/

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/the...not-led-or-hid-1st-gen-tundra-addition.80653/

As someone who has done both of these upgrades: the high watt H4 with relays and upgraded fogs had really good light output for being halogen. The LED mini projector install there is no going back from, as in you have to permanently change your headlights to install it.

Ultimately I still have the mini projectors and am satisfied.
