Considering running a set of remote battery terminals…

Just wondering if any of you guys have run remote battery terminals to the bed. I’m considering putting them on the d/s just inside the tailgate. A set up like this:

I’d like to be able to run my air compressor from the bed where I store it, rather than have to attach it under hood like I do now. Is it worth the time and expense of 20ft. X 2 of heavy gauge battery cable? Would I need anything else, in-line fuses, or relays? I’d try and stay along the d/s frame rail and up into this area:


and use that grey torx as a ground, or would that not even be necessary? Thanks guys.

 

100% put a fuse on it.

what kind of air compressor are you using?

 

It did a good job filling 4 oem sized tires to 40psi in about 20 minutes.

Far easier way to skin the cat!!! I like it. Save me a ton of money and effort too. So I can just splice that into the compressor, and plug it in to the trailer lights socket? No fuse protection necessary?

 

The 7pin trailer outlet should already have a fuse, but it wouldn't hurt to put an inline fuse.

 

When in doubt, always add a fuse.

I would definitely go the trailer plug route. It would be a pain to run a set of 2 gauge wires from the battery to the rear of the bed.

 

The trailer plug does have a 40 amp fuse to it - I also have an inline fuse in my Viair - I just cut off the alligator clips and wired in a 7-way plug.

I recently added a USB and 12v outlet to my bed - I don’t see the use for battery terminals.

 

I love bed power lol.

I added remote battery post years ago, under the bumper. I wish the 7 pin plug would have been available then. Would've been much cheaper. I've since upgraded the air pump. It was fine for the OEM tires, but too slow for 295s.

 

My SIL Is too booked to do it. But if you can leave it for a couple of days the shop he manages can do it.

I’ve done it 0 gauge. But if all you are doing is a compressor it is not really worth the effort.



My compressor has been updated since this picture and technically I think it could trip the 40 amp trailer plug in the right conditions so mine is sorta justified.

 

Depending on what you want and what you’re planning, consider this I have run welding leads to the front and rear of a couple of trucks that terminate with these. Then I have added the mate ends to compressor, jumper cables and removable winch. Allows you to use the gear in different rigs and not carry all the equipment all the time.
It’s called flexibility

 

I'd go Anderson SB50 or SB175 like suggested above. You can get them with a waterproof cover. I run my Puma 12v compressor off one that's currently under the hood right now but I'm planning to move it to the hitch to run the DC to DC charger in my trailer since it pulls more amps than the trailer harness can handle.
