I didn’t do equal length, im sure my system gains nothing…….
I had my cross over as close to the transfer case output as possible, so my entire system is at least level or above the bottom of the frame rails, I wanted it tight like a tiger

 

I've heard the Ecoboost raptors has equal length exhaust by way of a loopty-loop, but I haven't seen it.

 

And what’s crazy to think about every bend or total 90 adds x ammount of length in restriction, so all that has to be figured out to be done right

That's all trigonometry. We have deducts and math when we bend pipe. Well, when I bend pipe. Others just "eyeball" it. Filthy heathens.

 

Every 90 equals the same resistance as 7 feet of pipe assuming this is a sweeping 90 and not a hard restrictive 90.

I had a nice y-pipe for my Tacoma years ago. I had a really nice exhaust built for it. I really wanna get a set of long tubes for this big beluga whale of mine but having to jack up the engine and potentially 10+ hours of labor tells me it might be a no-go

 

Is that a general number for all piping? That’s a lot of extra from just a bend!

I did all of mine in a gravel driveway and single car garage. Again I didn’t get tricky with equal lengths but it gets the job done but headers AND full exhaust will probably take you more than 10hrs hahah

 

I did a ton of digging into this about 22'ish years ago when airbag trucks were the craze. For a minute there i wanted to have airbags but be able to hop like hydraulics. I studied up on flow characteristics of pipe/airline ect in order to figure out how to get enough volume of air to the airbags fast enough to make them expand quick enough to hop and also used the same theories to be able to control the rate of descent. The dump valve was smaller, and ran a long "exhaust" tube with a few bends in it and you could easily and slowly control the rate of your fall. But to get it to hop up off the ground on air-up you needed big valve as close to the bag with solid copper sweeping bend tubing. The larger, straighter, and shorter it was was the ticket. There were some books i read up on fluid dynamics and airflow but the common consensus was every 90 degree bend equals the same resistance as 7 feet of pipe.

Now if you are doing like black iron or galvanized pipe and have one of those tight heavy wall 90s with the center of the 90 smaller than the inlet of the pipe, you are going to slow it down even further.
The same goes for crimped wall bends from a standard muffler tubing bender. Crimping the wall by shrinking or acordian style bends will also reduce the airflow characteristics and present even more restriction. SO i would say assume the 90 degree bend equals the same resistance as 7 feet of pipe to be a sweeping 90 that is the same diameter as the pipe itself, no added restriction. Every restriction you add would equal more resistance.

Nice explanation, we use some of those heavy wall threaded 90s for LP steam.

 

Thay is a nice y-pipe exhaust. These headers could prob be done in 12 hours. But , if doable why not spread that over 3 days, and above is correct, getting ĝood fabricator to cut angled slice for turn, take to sander, debur, mock, tack, seal +back-puge then weld and move onto next pie cut. Yup , a nice exhaust can easily take another 10 hours. Then you have extending O2's, heat protection, tuning, which in my case w be w adjustments to hatdware. I mean its 100% worth it if you like this stuff like we do.

But to anyone else.....they think we are insane since any gm w 6.1 or ecoboost will still blow our doors off. But they dont have a all time classic mid-size truck that sell for 20k , 20+ years later when mint. They have already been recycled ( certainly not saying yotas dont rust lol) just saying a clean example is much more rare. ...lifted ford/,gm I dont even turn my head unless its a old ramcharger or CK

 

Best to install the headers at exhaust shop with you involved and a partner or a really good exhaust shop who will actually listen to small details.

 

They came from Keith with the headers and racing exhaust. I just didn't get the tailpipes.

you probably also use 360° loops and retards (expansion chambers). I know in some cases you gotta slow steam down. I don’t work that field but I did read a little about it. The super heavy wall 90s that have a smaller diameter inside is likely strategic for more than one reason other than to just take a turn.

 

I was reading over the instructions and it only said to follow the manufacturers recommendations.

I assume inside the engine bay?



Edited to add I just saw this video and yes, that's where they put it. Since it is adjustable I'm surprised it is an inch short

After remeasuring it is more than an inch as you move closer to the cabin

Pretty cool tool if it will work on my truck. It can lift the engine up with it without having to jack up under it. And with it being adjustable and the tundra having a hook on each side of the engine, I can easily do one side, which is perfect for doing the headers one side at a time

 

Interesting tool. I typically use a hoist when I need to raise of support an engine. With this I guess you don't have to deal with the legs of the hoist being in the way under the truck.

there must be just one manufacturer that makes all of these. I so so many different brands and all of them were the exact same length and alike in appearance. Could even make one longer that would be stronger and span a greater length or trucks and SUV's

 

I scored a used URD o2 simulator for $20 today. I'll install it tomorrow and report back. I been getting a p0420 and p0430

 

Nice. Do you have any idea how they work. These are just for downstream 02's. Have we confirmed seconary 02's are involved with open loop tuning? Im so used to them just being used for emissions.

Im too lazy to read about it. My buddy remote tunes new supras snd BMW'S he said if i get a check engine light he can correct. If* i get any, and have to go to him ill def keep you guys posted. This guy is king of 1uz and the old celica gts powerfc tuning. He made a bolton celica make 222whp so trust him.

I'm really puzzled by Keith's exhaust. I'm sure I'll see why it is this low when I get it mounted but still, wow it's hard for me to imagine how low this is going to hang.

Yeah, I've got a couple of minor surgical procedures to get done so I'll be squeezing this in during my downtime when I'm able, but hopefully within about a week I'll have the headers installed and have the exhaust hung. I'm a little bit anxious about how low it's going to hang, but we'll see soon enough

Keith said after unscrewing the motor mount on a given side, to lift the engine with a 2x4 on top of a floor jack like a stilt

I'm just not comfortable with my hands being in the way if that stilt or the jack slips. There has to a better way other than renting a cherry picker/engine hoist.

 

I used a rubber wheel chock turned upside down on top of the jack. Then I used that under the oil pan to lift up.
