I know nothing. Just bought a 2002 tundra with a broken lower ball joint drivers side. Or so I thought. The ball joint isn’t broken but the 4 bolts that hold it to the spindle all broke. Is this common? Any idea what might cause this?
    Thanks for any info
Note tires are 285/75/r16 and definitely rub at top ball joint and frame both sides

Both are known to break if neglected, or if the wrong (not OEM) parts are used.

A little searching will reveal many, many threads on lower ball joint failures.

You with the forest service? Private? Or just like the name? :D

Thanks for helping I have never worked on Toyota guess I won’t be able to say that now. I am thinking wrong tire size at least started the problem
If nothing is modified and I don’t think it is 285/75/16 is to big or the wheels are wrong. That corner was one the ground when I bought the truck so not sure what all is damaged. Previous owner got some of the parts then decided to sell. 4th generation logger from Oregon not forest circus. Thanks again
(Granddaughter found rattler while playing around the shop yesterday evening second this year and it’s only June snakes give me nightmares)

Do they rub anywhere? If this tire size is correct then something might be really wrong. I will try to take a picture but not a computer person so I might have to find one of them kids to help me

Reusing the LBJ bolt can cause failure as can overtorqueing them. The are 3 versions of OEM bolts and one of them requires a lower torque value.

I am on stock wheels with 1" spacers. My set up is 2885 springs up front and TC UCAs. No rub. It all depends on your setup though. Stock unmodified or molested suspension would not handle that tire. I think @VR6T and or @FishNinja is also running that tire, both with modified suspension and wheel setups.

I'd read the thread linked above. It'll answer a lot of questions you have, including the ones you don't know you have. It talks about everything - where people fuck up with their lowre balljoints, tire sizes and rub, rims and wheels, parts, etc. We worked as a community to toss it together, and it's basically the "central repository of shared knowledge we've experienced about these trucks"

My truck is stock, but the TRD package which is supposed to be a suspension that gives just a tiny bit more tire clearance. Apparently it can depend on tire brand and even model, as they can be a bit bigger or smaller than the claimed size, but on my truck, 265 75 16, just slightly bigger than stock, rubbed my frame. If your truck isn't a TRD, 245 70 16 is the stock size. TRD stock size is 265 70 16. So 285 75 16 is definitely a big tire compared to stock.

Comparison of the smaller stock size compared to what you've got, and the larger stock size compared to what you've got. Definitely significant.

OEM+, 6+1 bastard pack, 4.08 swapped rear end, custom spring shackles, 3 inch flat lift. This list will grow

I'm running Kumo AT51 255 70 17 on my dailys and will be trying out the Milestar M/T02, these for my 16s

I am also equiped with a 3" spacer lift in the front, a 6+1 bastard pack, 5100s all the way around and KSP UCAs and 1 inch wheel spacers to properly handle it all. It's a basic bitch set up, but it works.
