What I'm saying is Toyota already narrowed it down by VIN and then cross-referenced those VINs with the plant schedule. They can identify the time and day when those engines were built.

For example, when I wrote the follow-up to the Million Mile Tundra story, they were able to tell me the day and time that the engine was built. They also know how fast an engine takes to be completed.

The second part of the potential pool has to do with oil analysis IMO. Until they do an oil analysis of all 102k affected trucks, they won't be able to narrow it down any better. it isn't like the wrong part was installed. This is a lot tricker to narrow down.

I think it’ll be fine. Your oil will tell the truth, at the end of the day. I plan on giving a black stone bottle to my service guy when I bring it in, December.

23 Hybrid here with 7/23 build date. Does the engine have a different build date then what is on the door sticker.

I would have expected that Toyota as part of the engine problem assessment and extent of condition would be analyzing oil samples for the trucks it services.

They may be. I forget the specific issue, might have been fords issue with the 2.7L ecoboost, there was talk of them partnering with blackstone for oil sampling.

Other than that I’d be not surprised to find out that toyora dealers working on tundras are sending oil samples from customer units back to HQ for analysis. They already have the medium to do it and it’s the 2yr Toyota care.

I'm not sure how helpful an oil analysis would be. If it is a big chuck of debris, and it embeds/damages the bearing (as bearings are soft metal for this reason, but I assume the debris is too large to absorb without damage) to prevent it from getting proper lubrication, it may not show up in a sample until the bearing starts failing.

It is also very possible that if any problematic debris was in the engine, it also could have been flushed out in prior changes, and the damage is done and the engine is a time bomb, which makes sense as Toyota admitted many good operating engines showed signs of bearing damage.

So it seems like a physical inspection may be the right step. I assume they can get access to at least most of bearings with the oil pan removed.

The engines are built in Alabama and shipped to Texas where the truck is assembled, so no the engine build date is not the same as the vehicle build date.

did we determine if engine block is cast and machined in both Alabama and Japan? Or all cast and machined in Alabama and some shipped to Japan for final engine assembly?

This guy knows. I’ve had people having sex, doing drugs, getting drunk, and generally doing nothing during those shifts. They look good on paper (we can utilize all of our capacity! they cheered with glee in the boardroom) but rarely are they productive. I spent a short lived stint with monstrous oil field services provider (not a manager) and we used to take naps when we had to work overnight. The main problem is finding qualified bosses who want to work a graveyard shift.

pretty sure they said they put “1” because you have to enter a whole integer value in that field but they believe it is less than 1%. Too lazy to look it up tho.

I think you missed the but. I don't think Toyota officially said it was <1%. That's the best estimate of forum members gathering as much information from social media.

Nature made a solid state battery. Called hydrocarbon. Go beat its energy density.

Extracting hydrocarbons to refine and burn them to produce electricity, deliver over long power lines with vast energy losses, just to charge something on the far left lower corner? Hmm...

Sorry you used the third person pronoun" they" twice and I assumed you were referring to the same group. I now understand the first "they" was a reference to Toyota and the second "they" was a reference to the forum members.

I visited my local Toyota dealership today, I checked if there were any Tundras waiting for repairs, I only saw one Platinum that was already waiting to get picked up by the owner, I don't know why it was there, might have been simple oil change. I live in a big metro area and if engine failures were common, I would expect to see at least a couple of trucks waiting for repairs.
There were probably 20 new Tundras in their inventory sitting on the lot though.

Most of this is anecdotal. Your dealer could have had 5 tundras torn apart in their bays waiting for engines.

We have seen reports of late 23s and 24s failing, but it does not seem to be a huge number (but we only see what is reported on the internet).

It is possible that the enhanced issue with the 22s and early 23s puts the spotlight on failures that could be within the "acceptable failure rate" and those are failing for other reasons. We just don't know. So that is why there are many theories, people speculating, etc., but the only facts are we don't know how many trucks it will actually affect both inside (other than the roughly 900 we know have failed) and outside the recall. We also know that "good" engines torn down by Toyota showed signs of bearing damage that will likely lead to failure, so there are a lot of trucks that will likely still fail.

Hell, even Toyota admitted that they put 1% as a default in the notice to the NHTSA noting that the 1% indicated they have no idea how many are actually affected from the recalled vehicles.

Not having more data is frustrating, but eventually all the data will come out.

Well my 2023 Tundra was purchased in 8/23. It runs very well. I did a 600 miles trip last weekend over 2 mountain passes. It made 22 mpg. I highly doubt that debris in the engine is the problem. I had my local guy do an EOC at 6000. Every thing looked good.
I'm an engineer and I think it's bearing design or bearing lube issues causing the failtures

I'm struggling to believe what I've been told too. I'm also struggling to determine what brand of truck I'd want more. I like my Tundra and honestly, would just buy a '24 if I thought it was fixed (which I don't).
