Trans metal plate leaking

    What is this black metal cover on front of trans? There’s a gap in bottom that I can’t tell if that’s it’s design or if it’s broke? The trans flange actually has a half moon in bottom that appears like it would drain or vent. Anyone she’s some insight on this?

    That's an inspection cover, its supposed to have that drain there to inform you of a leak. You probably have a rear main seal leaking.

    Thanks for the quick reply. Well nothing is leaking on floor as of right now, but this is a new to me 2006 double cab with 113k. Just changing all fluids, spark plugs and inspecting what I can while I’m underneath. I’m new here, so I’m trying to sort through posts to see what is troublesome for these first gen tundras.

    I have the same leak. I’m thinking mine is an oil pan seal leak on the driver side and it’s running down while driving. Iv had this leak for about 20k miles. I took off the inspection cover and it’s clean So it’s not a rear mail seal.

    I need to clean the bottom with a degreaser to find my leak. Doesn’t leak enough to paint the floor. But does get the steering rack oily.

    slowly chasing all my leaks. Just did the valve cover gaskets and that fixed one oil leak

    This scared me to death when I saw this same leak under my truck. I've had the rear main seal replaced on my 01' but it still leaks.

    The dealer thinks its something different (which it could be, idk). Maybe later this summer when I can afford to i'll take it to another shop or back to the dealer when the oil change is due for more investigation.

    How many places can funnel the oil so they can all leak to here? I'm down about 1/2 quart of oil between every 6/mos 3k miles changes.

    check next to you oil filter/ oil cooler. Mine was leaking from there, running along the top of the oil pan rim and splashing there

    Not only that, but also check the half-moon plugs at the back of the heads. It's something people fail to do (or fail to do properly, or fail to realize they're disentegrating) when doing the valve covers. They should be done with valve cover gasket change, all four pulled, cleaned of FIPG, then re-FIPG'ed, reinserted, FIPG smoothed at the two seams, before sealing the infamous corners near the timing side, and valve cover reinstalled. If you don't manage this during valve cover gasket changes, or it wasn't done properly, oil can leak down the back side of the engine and end up coating everything behind it. Some pics to help you understand what/where the half moons are, what they look like, and how to manage them. Get a mirror - look at the back of your engine/heads to check for oil at the back/rear of the head.

    Circling the half moons, installed and sealed in place on my passenger head - one isn't visible, so the next picture shows where they sit normally. If you can't pull up by hand, a pair of adjustable pliers will do the job, just a rag in the jaws if you don't want to mar anything.

    Here is the notch the half-moon sits in. Notice what's sitting behind it in the photo? Yup. Things that make you go "Hmmmmm..."

    Here is what your half moon plug looks like, and the instructions. Basically, clean the groove of old FIPG. Confirm the half moon isn't falling apart, if it is, replace. If OK, small bead of FIPG thru the channel, and install. Then with a finger, smooth the beads at the edge of the head with a finger.

    Directly from the FSM for my '06, it doesn't show it, but you'll get some ooze up when installing the plug, lay it down to flatten a little over the seam:
