03 tundra trans fluid

just bought a 03 tundra AC 4x2 4.7 auto,have a stack of dealer records since new,in 08 trans flush with what invoice frm dlr says ATFB ,at 60K miles , now at 126K ,want to drop trans pan and replace orig filter,clean out pan, fluid is bright red and smells like new, shifts great,one owner!!!,,should i do this or just drain/fill??? what type of fluid is ATFB??? THANKS TO ALL!!!

 

no, I would just drain and refill.

side note: every dealership is starving for $$$ right now due to the car market collapsing in on itself. Parts and repairs is where they're somewhat able to stay a float.

 

Dex III is the ATF we use in 00-02, Type T-IV for 03-04.

 

Don’t drop pan. Too many have snapped bolts. Waste of time changing filter. Do a couple drain and fills.

 

Thanks ,,sounds like drain and fill is the way to go, as I know manual says 65 inch pounds for pan bolts,,what do u think ATFB means ,,,dealer jargon for DEX III??

You can go to most Toyota Dealerships and at the service/parts counter ask for however many quarts of Dexron III. Not a hybrid mix like MaxLife or Dex/Merc.

 

I’m willing to bet my truck there’s absolutely no reason an 03-04 Tundra tranny cannot take Dexron 3 or better ATF. What changed? The overdrive gear? I think that’s it. Toyota just wants to sell you their fluid.

Dealer should've referenced that same info, so I'm going to assume they got it correct. As for whether a non-Toyota-dealer would get it right ... can't say.

They're the same trans, just the planetary gear changed.

 

Exactly which is why you could potentially use either Dexron 3 or Type T-IV in my opinion. Ideally, something full synthetic.

Seriously, if it's not giving you any problems, and it's as you say, why mess with it?

 

A drain and fill is called for every 30K miles (it takes about 4 quarts). With proper preventive maintenance these transmission will last a million miles. Or you can roll the dice and wait for something to break. Your call.

 

Ehhhhhh I'm @ 260k+ and I'll be the first to do a transmission fluid drain/refill on this truck.

 

Haven’t seen one go a million yet. Even the million mile guy replaced a trans in both of his million mile tundras.

 

I didn't know that. How many miles on each trans?

 

One only went like 750k if I remember right. Pitiful.
