Very cool. Glad to hear it!

Now they will probably used an older canned tune; wont hurt to have @snivilous or some of the other tuners clean it up. This doesn't need to be mentioned to Sparks.

The instruction are pretty much idiot proof. Yes a VB has a lot of parts but you are only messing with certain parts. You dont need to take everything out like those videos. Pull something out and replace with the new part. No different than removing a spark plug and reinstalling one back. The Sonnax instruction are step by step. I dont see a way to mess it up if you have mechanical experience. When I did my first VB shift kit on a 4L70E, I was intimidated but at the same time confident that it wouldn't be an issue. Dropped the VB and followed the steps. Remove a part, reinstall the new part. No big deal. You also have to remember that these kits already come as drop in kits. No need to shim or measure anything.

It'll be a year later this month. For reference my maggy upgraded coupler also lasted less than a year. Miles less than 10k I would guess

Did you check the bypass valve? Mine had a faulty diaphragm right out of the box and would make a faint rattle at times as the valve flopped around. It was intermittent and would hold vacuum fine until you tapped or barely jiggled the housing (simulating engine vibration) then it would intermittently drop vacuum either partially or completely. A cheap hand held vacuum pump was all I needed to diagnose, but I'm sure you would know how to check for vacuum.

That just doesn't seem like much, even with some pretty aggressive use. Maybe it's just a loose battery hold down bracket. ;)

Sounds similar to my diagnosis- faint rattle at a certain rpm then goes away but need to dig into it some more.

I’ve seen at least 5 cases of bad couplers on whipples on the FB boosted page that I can remember their names. Some within 10k, others 20k. Hopefully that’s not it, but if it is hopefully they have updated the coupler material to something more durable. And like you said, May as well port it if that’s what you wanted to do anyway! I believe the whole thing has to come off and then you have to separate the rotor pack from the tub. There was some good pics/video of one taken apart for the coupler on the boosted page.

Oh wow, didn’t realize how close Kong was to me. 1.5 hour drive. I saw the note about only being recommended if your spinning it over 13k rpm. How fast are you spinning that thing? I know you plan to build the motor later of course. I’m just wondering if there is any reason not to port it if you’re not planning to spin it faster.

Just thinking about that not sure what current rpm is. But at the end of the day making it flow more at the current boost level taking less effort would be a win either way. I saw some gain 1.5-2 psi. I could then back down the pulley and be even better off. We did porting on the old Eatons back in the day and of course the gains after when spun harder were even better.

That's a little disconcerting as I've not heard of a single whipple coupler failure before today. Of course, I haven't gone looking for them and I know they are a wear item, but I might have to look in to it a bit. I'm not super concerned about mine, but it would be nice to know about just in case.

Just do as a 3rd genner does every day when they get in their truck, and don’t worry about something that hasn’t happened yet…

For real though, I wouldn’t stress it. If you want when I have time I can PM you some screenshots with some possibly useful information to know about the Whipple coupler situation as handled by others if there is a problem from some relevant Facebook posts. Some say they updated it from a 6 piece individual coupler design to a one piece design which is probably more similar to the Eaton style. If they try to fix it by just sending you 6 new coupler pieces I wouldn’t accept that and I’d ask for the supposed updated design. A couple people went through 2 to 3 sets of the 6 piece style as they were repeatedly failing in a short time frame.

Haha. Ya, I'm not worried about it per se. Just one of those things that I like to know about in case I need to identify it early on, rather than sitting on the side of the road somewhere. I was just surprised to hear about them. I though that as Magnuson thing... :boink:

Dude from up north dropped this off over the weekend. Going to install a 2.0" pulley kit, 650cc injectors, AFR gauge, catch can, fuel pump, IPT valve body, transmission cooler, spark plugs, and tune it. And then he apparently has a 2021 Tundra he just bought and is installing a 2650 Magnuson on it and will drop that off for similar treatment in the future.

With my 750's and 2.0 pulley I'm about 72-78% so should be a "little" wiggle room.

I wouldn't mind going larger, but the "Prospeed" injectors are janky so I don't like them, and the Five-O injectors I feel like are more prone to issues, so I'm doing Deutschwerks, which limits it to 650s. But it should be fine, lowest elevation it'll see is 2500ft most likely. Maybe go down to Las Vegas once in a blue moon, but I'll throw in a big pulley so he can drop the boost if he wants. With boost reference the injectors will probably be in the 90% duty cycle range, and majority of the time being in Salt Lake City they won't even be that high.
