TOTAL CHAOS - 2007-2021 Toyota Tundra Upper Control Arm (UCA)

comparing to other brands of aftermarket UCAs, do you all have a reason for the uniball adaptor on top? it prevents the use of a Caps to keep dirt out. would a sealed uniball not be ideal?

 

You could always get these and then throw your Delta joint in there right?

 

there are advantages and disadvantages to everything. keeping a cap on can lead to dirt, grime, ect sitting on top of the uniball and really making a mess of things under the cap as seen in this picture.

Did you get the extended travel? If so, they are designed to be installed with an aftermarket UCA. If you didn’t order extended travel and plan to be over 3 inches of lift (2.5 more realistically) they will help.

Correct. Not extended travel. Those would be 25001-143A-EXT

 

Just post for the group:

a 2.5" shock would work with a stock UCA if:
1. it's not an extended travel shock
2. you don't have a 2" or greater lift on your vehicle

 

yikes! I wonder if a thin layer of grease between the cap and mounting surface could further prevent stuff (dirt/water) from going in... I understand that the problem is the cap keeping stuff IN, but then it wouldn't be a problem if nothing got in to begin with.

Lack of maintenance is always the biggest culprit.

 

It might but you're still trapping whatever gets under the cap inside. If you can't see dirt/water/ect you're going to ignore it which is why it's a better idea to have it out in the open so you can see whats happening.

 

I installed the bushing UCA’s about 5 years ago. I’m hard on them every once in a while, but it’s generally highway miles. I accidentally blew out the seals while greasing a few months ago, so it’s due for new bushings. But the uni-ball joint is still secure.

Most recent alignment sheet also pictured. I think I need new LCA and rack bushings, it drives sloppy and gets bump steer.

Are dust caps on uniball upper control arms everything that you think they are?

Here is why we choose not to use them.

Our roots are in desert racing. We want to be able to easily inspect the condition of our equipment and ensure that our parts are properly cleaned after every off road trip. Prep and maintenance are key to a reliable trail rig. Moisture can seep thru the bottom of a capped uniball and you would never see it.

You never know what is under the dust cap - unless you pop it off and inspect the uniball regularly.

We apply 25 years of hands on off road experience to develop our products and accessories. Every innovative brand has a philosophy or reason they do things a certain way. The imitation brands just knock off an idea from someone else, and often do not manufacture their parts in house. A few pioneer companies like TOTAL CHAOS still exist and remain independently owned in off road. Not many - but there are still a few!
