Why'd they go from Arabic numbers to Roman numerals?

Because it seems bad. Granted I recall my 5vz tacos getting terrible mileage in town. Probably like 14. But they could get up to 21 hwy

 

I'm running 32.5" tires which lends to a speedo difference over stock 30.6" tire of +6.2%.

I've been driving about 75/25 highway/city+trails dragging the kids around on hikes for the last full tank of gas (and then some). My last trip logged 256mi on the ODO, so [256*1.062=] 271.9 miles rounded up. It took 20.949 gallons to fill since last fill-up, unless my math is forked, 271.9/20.949 = 12.979mpg. I'd say he's doing pretty damn well.

Mind you, I cannot consistently keep my foot out of the gas. I'm not gunning it at every light, but I accelerate like a mofo onto the interstate regularly and I'm also slinging probably 15-20lb more rubber per wheel than snekman.

 

The freeway entrance I take for camping sucks for doing anything like that, it’s a stupid clover type design, gotta go super slow due to the curve and have a very short window to merge into travel lanes as others from those lanes are trying to merge into the exit for the other side of the clover. But I definitely punch it hard and it’s always good!!! I could take a different street for freeway entrance but none of them are super convenient; further back or thru more city street lights.

I'm not sure. 10 years old I'd guess. One of the sedans. Vacuum hose is actually what my buddy assumed.

 

My city mileage is terrible but I have no issues getting 16-17 on our road trips. I've had tanks over 17mpg several times and I think one was 18.6 coming back from the Outer Banks. I drive like an old man most of the time though. I'll give it hell around town sometimes.

 

Not that I think anyone here will find this remotely interesting, but I snagged a couple of 90s era MTB on the cheap last night. Yellow one looks to be a '97 Specialized S-Works M2, Bluish-purple one a '95* Specialized Rockhopper FS A1 Comp. I have a sneaky suspicion the Rockhopper may end up being too small, looks to be maybe an 18/M or something, but won't know until I have time to grab them on Monday (already paid up, just gotta pick up). Looks like The M2 has really nice XTR group on it. Not sure if they'll replace my '96 Cdale M500, but I'm gonna rebuild and give 'em a go.

When I first got the truck, bone stock, driving purely highway to/from the dealer in Auburn on my way home, then back out again, with hardly any city, I got 16.21mpg. I have no doubt the mods I've done to make the truck taller, more tire weight, larger diameter tire throwing off speedo/odo has caused at least a ~2mpg hit. One of these days I'll get a more-purely-straight-highway (95%+) pair of fill-ups so I can test that out. Sucks my cruise won't work with even the slightest hills w/o hunting after new tires.

Curious, which KO2 are you running, the c-rated or e-rated? With the mileage you have on yours, they're probably within 0.1" - 0.2" diameter of my Mickeys. Just curious if you got the 50lb (c-rated) or 57lb (e-rated) KO2. My Mickeys are ~55lb. I expect that extra 5lb rotational mass per tire would make some difference.

 

Hey, at least the Rockhopper has some pedals. I've got a bin full of pedals still in the shop, I'm sure there's a pair or two of Wellgos that'll work good enough.

 

I got the C's and I'm glad I did. I'd like to go with them again to keep the weight down. Probably next year. I'm down to 7/32 tread. I'm also lugging probably 500lbs of armor. The sliders alone weigh 75lbs each. It sounds like it's your spirited driving. I'm old.

 

I'd like to find something similar in gnarliness but in C, and closer to 45-50lb. I really like the traction of these tires. They don't care what they're on, they grip and rip. On asphalt they grab like velcro. I cannot get them to peel out, just a tiny chirp and I'm thrown into the seat.

On of my bikes use for hillclimbing exercise is a crmo frame with cantilever brakes and the other is just hi-ten steel with v brakes and neither has shocks ... from the 90s or maybe the latter from 2000... IIRC

05-06 AC limited V8, hands down.
Best engine, best transmission, best features, best power to weight ratio.

Unless you can find a supercharged 00-04.

 

It is important to note that my mpg average is mostly in city. I have a 24 mile round trip commute to work and back with only 4 of those miles on the actual highway.

Do you have kids or any plans to? The access cabs aren't great for rear passengers but if you don't plan to haul anyone they are the perfect size.

There are more important things to consider, but your question is flawed. All had their issues, it depends on what issues and features jibe with your needs, and what cab type requirements you have.

A lot of people will say the sweet spot is ‘03-‘04, you have every cab type option in ‘04 specifically, bigger 13WL brakes, no planetary explosion problems, no SAI pump. You lack some extra horsepower and general power from VVTi that comes with the ‘05-‘06, and also lack the 5 speed transmission which some would prefer for towing. You also lack some convenience features like steering wheel radio controls in the later years (I swear I’ve seen an ‘04 with steering controls but I may be wrong). But generally speaking the middle years have a great blend of early and later, without some extras that turn people off, at the expense of a couple extras that turn people on.

The more important thing is that the truck has an ideal mileage between 125-175k, recent timing belt work done, and the frame is original, unpainted, untreated, and no rust.

 

I'm not a big fan of suspension forks, I'll need to see how that pans out. I've been riding a rigid alloy mid-90s M500 (pic) that's done me well, even as built, it's barely 21lb. It'll be interesting to see how heavy the M2 metal matrix frame is. I'm sure the Stumpy's alu frame will be in the ballpark of the M500 I'm already on. Will find out on Monday, I guess. I think the Stumpy FS frame is just over 3.5lb and the M2 is right around 4. Wonder if I can drill things down to sit around 20ish...

 

Apparently the VF tuner can disable the SAIS and rear O2 sensors. All the more reason to get a tune

It'd take me a decade to do what I've done to both trucks to the DC, but I'd get to wrench on the family truck with the family
