Faulty Radio Knob 2023 Tundra TRD Pro

A while ago I added a printable plastic collar that will do just that to reinforce the OEM knob to my 3D print files. I also added a repair sleeve that you can glue in to replace a broken one. See the link in the earlier post.

I honestly don't see how any self-respecting DIY guy doesn't have one. I make so much stuff... And most users generally share their designs so you can often get what you want without having to do an original design and just print it out. Like you can go get the files for these knob replacements and repairs anytime and print them out.

There is a bit of a learning curve, however, so it is more suited to those of us who like to tinker and work problems as long as it takes to resolve them. Like me... I am an engineer. Getting the printer calibrated, understanding the properties and settings for different plastics and build sheets, etc. A "name brand" printer like a Prusa is generally easier and more reliable for first timers to set up and get good results. There are cheaper out there, and they work just as well, but may be more suitable for folks for whom the 3D printing itself is a hobby, not a tool. For me it is a tool and I just want it to work.

Then there are several softwares to learn most notably some sort of 3D CAD program and a "slicer" that renders the designs into something the printer can print. As for 3D CAD software there are really complex tools out there, but I mostly use TinkerCad, a free cloud-based program. I make 90% of my stuff with that because it is simple and fast. You just combine shapes in the form of solids or holes to get what you want. Since I often make stuff to fit or interface with existing stuff, like the radio knobs, I most often have to do some iterations... Measure the real-world stuff as best you can with digital calipers then make a design, then print and check for fit... to get a part dialed in. That's just the way this works.

Hey folks. I thought I would share since I haven't seen this posted on either of the two threads (that I know about) regarding the weak volume knob for the 14" screen.

I know a lot of folks think AJT is overpriced. If you're looking for another aluminum knob alternative, check out this guy: Toyota Tundra/Sequoia Volume Knobbies - Topographic Map - Mace Manufacturing (macemfg.com).

It popped up on Reddit last night and thought it was a cool option. Priced kind of between the $20 (plastic?) Amazon knob and the $100 AJT knob.

However, as a fan and owner of many AJT products, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that AJT has since released a cheaper alternative that is priced at $55 and allows some customization. However, it's currently sold out due to high demand: Radio Knob (2022+ Tundra) - BLACK (ajtdesign-llc.com)

Sharing in case the weak knob is still a problem with the newer trucks, which I assume it is since AJT seems completely sold out.

 

The Mace would be perfect if it allowed the center light (for night driving) to show through like the OEM and AJT.

 

A quick fix. If you have a .45ACP shell case laying around, cut the end of and slide it over the broken stud. Mine was just cracked. It slides on with a tight enough tolerance that it
stays and reenforces the post. Could use some glue, but mine is on tight enough that it stays put. The OD doesn't touch the hole it slides into. Was slightly snugger sliding it in place on the dash.

 

I just put some heat shrink tubing on to reinforce after my 1st broke.

 

Hey, do you remember the starting or ending diameter of the tubing you used? I'm about to receive my 2nd replacement knob from the dealer and want to try the shrink tubing this time. Thanks.

 

I don't. I bought a multipack on Amazon that was around $6, and started with the size that was tightest before shrinking.

 

Upon receiving my 2nd replacement knob from dealer, I took the advice of some and bought the heat shrinking rubber tubing. 1/2" to 1/4" worked perfectly. Tubing multi pack was $2 and the repair took less than 2 minutes including finding the torch, lol.

 

I believe someone posted on Facebook that there was an "improved" radio knob from Toyota, 86128-AN010, with a "beefer" shaft, to replace the 86128-0C050. I order three of the -AN010 for $8.16 each however, I was received only one -AC010 and two -0C050; you can see the difference on the mounting shafts in the picture.

However, contacting Toyota Parts I was told that 86128-AN010 was the old number and replaced by 86128-0C050. I doubled checked with my local Toyota Dealer Parts Department and they confirmed the the -0C050 is the replacement for the -AN010. WTF Toyota, the replacement is the weaker version!!!

 

Not necessarily, if they are made from a tougher material that can bend without cracking.

Mine broke today, 2023 Capstone, the dealer oil change guys broke it. So the dealer grabbed one off of a 2024 Tundra on the lot. It looks the same but isn't. It doesn't slide all the way on so it wobbles. They have a few replacements coming in tomorrow. I'll go in and see if the are the old or new style. Either way I think i will order after market to save myself from having to replace it again in the future. What a terrible design.

UPDATE: I went back today and the new one fits perfectly and it is an updated design with a beefier stalk, so we shall see. But I did order one of the ones mentioned earlier in this thread, the $55 dollar one. I'll put that on when it arrives and save the stock one for when i trade this in.

 

Come on Toyota. 3+ years now! This is low hanging fruit that should have easily been resolved with a beefier model over a year ago. Where’s Kaizen now??

The one i received today looks like the 86128-AN010. The one that broke off in my truck didn't look like either of those. The one that broke off in mine had 4 flimsy plastic tabs making up the mounting shaft, not the two shown in both of those pictures.

 

I ordered the radio knob with SS screws last night, looking forward to giving it a spin

 

It looks like there is yet a new part number for the replacement radio knob.

The dealer replaced it under warranty.
