I bought my battery 7/4/18. It's completely dead now and time for a new one.

So whats the word on AGM vs Optima? And would a dual battery setup be good for my application? I was thinking just doing 2 in parallel for the amp draw. I also need a sequoia alternator.

DO NOT mix an AGM style battery and a non AGM battery in the same system. I can not express the DO NOT hard enough. Best recommendation is to run the same brand of battery in a dual set up. Or at least the same style so standard cell with standard cell.

Optima are AGM, except their lithium.

Oh they'd be the same type. I don't think I'm quite there yet though. I'm pulling roughly 100A at full boogie, so the tree alt and a new battery should be good.

Sweet. So does it require that weird diode thingy?

I have a 100 amp sitting in my walk way for mine waiting to go in.

AGM batters just hold up better, take a deeper charge and can be mounted in non traditional ways vice a traditional wet cell battery. They are more geared towards race and hard core off roading applications.

You will need an AGM compatible charger to be able to charge them if they ever go flat. If you're not trying to Baja or do racing/ an application where you could end up on your roof I'd say save the 60 extra per battery and go traditional.

Don’t forget they’re essentially no maintenance, I think that’s why a lot of people get them.

But when they require their maintenance it's a bitch to repair/ recondition them. But other than that they're good batteries for sure

Optima is a brand that makes AGM. They are made by a company called Clarios. The current AGM I have is a Northstar, who is now EnerSys. I don't think they use the Northstar brand anymore, but they also make Odyssey batteries, as well as Batteries Plus' house brand, X2 Power. The current AGM I am looking at is US Battery brand. That's what my local battery house carries currently I believe, and that battery house is typically cheaper than Batteries Plus.

Spendier, but I'd do a LiFePo4 as a second battery instead of an AGM. You can discharge a Lithium further without damaging it. Think there shouldn't be an issue running the two types in parallel if needed, varying opinions you can read on that, but you'll want a separate charging system. I'd just try to run your amp off the LiFePo4 alone instead, might get some good run time with it charged and the truck off.

@FrenchToasty, do you have plans to do an isolator or get your Renogy connected to the alternator?

LiFePo4 perform better in the cold, not as better as they would in regular temps, but you can't charge them below freezing. They don't loose their charge overnight in the cold like flooded batteries do. For cold weather, I'd run something like this. https://lionenergy.com/products/battery-warmer.

The LiFePo4s in our motorhome are so much better than the stock flooded ones.

Depends on what TZ you’re in. It was 9:30am when I posted that. I’ll be out of pocket for a few days and possibly posting at weird hours while hanging out with some windmills, tulips, and eating too many stroopwafels

Ours went up 70% in two years. My agent said this is the worst market he's seen in 20 years. I recommend finding a local agent that will shop for the best rates among several insurance companies. Just make sure you are having them use the same coverage amounts as you currently have so that you get an apples to apples comparison. We had him shop around and just switched to a new company which saved us $1000/year between home and auto.
