Demagnetize? Compass not calibrating

I have retrofitted a compass/temp overhead console in my 06 tundra DC. There is power to the unit, but the compass only indicates “N” and temp is all over the place, sometimes reading in the negatives on a warm day. I have gone through the calibration procedure multiple times, but no change. Either I need to demagnetize (like underlined in red) or i have a faulty console?
Any thoughts?

 

Maybe try disconnecting power to the unit?

Makes me wonder if an ECU reset would do it? Anyone perform an ECU reset on 1st gen?

 

You say you have "retrofitted" this compass and temp. gauge. How did you wire it in? Are you sure you have the polarity correct?

Yes. It's as simple as disconnecting the negative battery cable and letting it sit for like 30 minutes. Although I would be very surprised if that corrects this particular problem. Worth a shot, I suppose.

 

I Installed a harness from an 05 tundra DC. Harness was from a Limited trim with DVD. Im not using the DVD part of the harness, but the part to the overhead console plugged right in, and then the source end of the harness plugged in behind the fuse block.

 

There's a calibration procedure for when you replace those mirrors. You select the compass zone you are in, then you're supposed to drive in circles to calibrate it. Let me see if I can find the instructions.

Yes i have that, the page above is from that FSM procedure. Ive done the whole procedure multiple times, driven in circle’s multiple times etc. The thing is, it says once the temp displays, then drive in circles, but the temp wont display until your driving. ???

 

Im just going to mail it back to the ebay seller as a return and try again, probably a dud.

 

Sounds like you may be a victim of getting a overhead console that's not using the same pinout your truck is expecting. There are a couple of variations it seems. That's discussed over here, IIRC. https://www.tundras.com/posts/2714202/

 

Way to go @shifty`! Ok interesting info after checking. i went over to the link and pic and added below. I checked continuity from the sender. although the wires are all the same color and position as the pic below, my temp wires are pins 2 and 7 (#2 green with orange stripe, #7 white with green stripe) .Again confirmed by continuity test.
So then I wonder what the pink and blue wires run? Do I understand correctly that the compass only needs a power source and a ground? I wonder if when the temp is wired properly the compass will work?

As i study this diagram, the key seems pretty understandable, but cant figure out what wire #2 is? What is “SI”?

 

I think the important part is to pay close attention where pin #1 is in relation to the connector, which side of the connector you're looking at, and whether you have a specialty configuration that jibes with what you're reviewing, like the sunroof variation shown. This is why I have issues with EWD, I hate reading them. If you look, you can find some breakouts for the abbreviations, either in the front or back, I want to say it's the front. Legend of sorts.

Best guess on "SI" is it's "Security Indicator". Here's the expanded view of those diagrams, I see the line you're referencing passes into IC5 bulkhead/connector, which I think is behind the dash gauges, then the overall diagram shows it terminating into the combination meter (which I believe is technical term for the gauge cluster?)

I had a 4Runner with the compass and inclinometer on the dash. There was a calibration procedure in the owners manual that IIRC involved driving in circles.
