I am so, so close to pulling the trigger on a 2024 Tundra Limited(TRD off-road). But, a large part of my scheme and motivation for buying a truck is also loading it up with a Scout Tuktut camper(1000 lbs with add-ons). With people/dogs/gear, that adds up but still stays under what Toyota publishes on its website for this vehicle as its payload rating: 1740 lbs.

But! Then you look at the published manual for the same and we have the issue:

Cargo weight rating: about 600 lbs, this is in the section describing campers
This number is followed by a diagram showing that camper and vehicle should not exceed GVWR...k

Total load capacity: 1380 lbs, all passenger, luggage and cargo shall not exceed.

We know that payload = GVWR minus curb weight(empty vehicle + fluids).

So am I to believe that my truck bed camper shall not exceed 600 lbs? That's despite the the published payload rating of 1740. Obviously there's more to the load than that (axel weights being one other complication). But Toyota throws around these terms and numbers without really digging into how the consumer should interpret them.

    Published payload rating means nothing.

What does the door jamb of the truck you’re looking at say?

I don’t think we’ve seen a single door jamb say anything north of 1500 lb.

Door jam Tire and Loading sticker says 1380 lbs.

Why does payload rating mean "nothing."

Published numbers mean nothing if there isn’t a single truck in existence with those numbers on the door jamb.

Toyota says the 3rd Gen is capable of XXXX lbs payload, but not a single truck they build has that number on the door jamb.

My 7.3 gas f-250 superduty had a payload of like 3,000 lbs…I think you need one of those, don’t forget the extended warranty :p

isn’t the published number on a stripped out truck? I know fords highest numbers are like a single cab, 2wd, dually….anything more than that starts eating into the number

But that's issue: what does the number on the door jam mean...? And why would I use that number over any other number? The manual also state's don't exceed GVWR. If that's the higher number, then why would I not go with the higher number. Sure, there's a sticker that says differently but now I'm back around to the first question--Why does the sticker speak louder than the manufacturer's payload rating? Perhaps what you're trying to say is that sticker number (1380lbs) IS the payload capacity(GVWR minus curb weight).

Because it's just marketing hype... Payload "Up to"... "As much as"... "When properly equipped"...

Except none of those Unicorns seem to actually exist. Door jamb sticker is it.

Many say that the sticker is pretty conservative, and GVWR minus actual curb weight on a CAT scale could gain you a couple hundred lbs.

I would generally say that slide in campers are not a good match for 1/2 ton trucks, but that one seems pretty reasonable starting around 700#. 1000# loaded up is at the edge and I would hope that the weight was mostly located lower in the tub and not high up on the camper shell. If it's your dream to have it, go for it and buy a less kitted out truck to increase your payload rating if it bothers you. SR5 Doublecab for instance.

The stripped out truck payload is somewhere in the 1900 range. I'm looking at Toyota's specs forsame engine in "limited" trim. Sure there's some bells and whistles that could reduce from the 1740 but...

Stated another way, if my total weight (camper, people, gear) does not exceed GVWR isn't that the real control?

Depends on where you put that weight. You can be under GVWR and be over GAWR.

If you get the rear air suspension, this will work just fine.

Post #5 is a 2023 Limited and only has 1400lbs. You need to get past what the brochures and websites advertise and see what the actual specific vehicle says. Each vehicle is different.

There's quite a few examples of others on here for you to read through. BUT I'd love to see a sticker on a Tundra that said 1740 or even 1900.

The door jamb sticker is designed to be specific to the vehicle it's stuck to. So the sticker's numbers will always supercede any other source such as: Manufacturer's website, brochures, YouTube/TV ads or commercials, etc.

You're also going to want to be cautious about the composite bed being able to withstand the constant load of a camper, particularly if that weight sits on the bedsides.
