Does anyone have or know where to find a breakdown of the wiring harness coming off of the amplifier? I have removed the factory head unit and am left with a 20 pin plug that has 13 wires going to it. I have not been able to find an accurate breakdown of which wire does what. Any help is appreciated!

Hopefully this can shed some light on the subject....

All 13 wires are identified on the diagram.

Thanks. It sheds some light, but there is still a bit that is hidden. The colors of the wires in my wiring connector are different from what is in the provided schematic (see photos). I would prefer to figure this out before I start cutting and splicing wires. Any ideas?20200514_140804.jpg 20200514_140812.jpg 20200514_143812.jpg

Can I ask why you're cutting wires? There's adapters for under $10 so you can leave the factory connectors.

Are you saying that the pre-amp should be bypassed, then? The factory configuration has the head unit plugging into a pre-amp, which has the 13-wire connector coming out of it. The pre-amp has 2 other connectors going into it.

    Factory configuration:
    2 connectors -> pre-amp w/ 13-wire connector -> factory head unit

    Proposed configuration:
2 connectors -> aftermarket harness adapter -> aftermarket head unit (Blaupunkt Baltimore)

Does this seem like it would work?

Blaupunkt is German. Germans make good stuff. @Pucks18 post up a link or pic of your adapter.

When I installed stereos back in the day, that amp stayed in the truck. It was much easier to unplug the harness, bypass the amp and leave the amp where it was.

After barking up a lot of wrong trees, I have finally gotten the stereo wiring harness sorted out. The amplifier needed to be bypassed in order to reveal the wiring connectors to which my wiring adapters connected. Thanks to everyone who contributed info.

I also added a back up camera since the new head unit could accommodate. Why not, right?20200603_205007.jpg 20200508_220112.jpg

Start by filling out your profile to list what year and type of cab your (dad's?) truck is, "regular", "access" or "double".
Then go create your own thread asking for help with whatever you need help with.
It would help to know if your truck has tweeters in the front door, and if you see "JBL" anywhere on the radio face.

Whatever you do, DO NOT cut the factory harness(es).

I'm starting where CDavis108 worked through the issues. The 03 unit lost the CD years ago, but the casette still works :) Decided to go aftermarket. Worked out the install and trim nicely. Working on wiring and as pointed out may have to bypass the aplifier below the head unit. Have six speakers, a nice Toyota labeled head that weighs a LOT. Ideally I wanted to add Sirius XM but that does not seem possible in older cars without going to a Sirius only type radio. Currently my wires to radio are like CDavis and don't match posted schematics so will remove the amplifier and adapt those wires to the new head. Will know more when I get the amplifier out. Not fun driving around with the console face removed, you lose air control and A/C.

Do yourself a huge favor and read the "Audio, audio upgrades and cameras..." section of THIS THREAD if you haven't already.

There's no guesswork if you understand what you're doing and how to bypass the amp, which you will need to do (may as well remove it entirely, free up some space.

Nearly every aftermarket stereo you'll find at Crutchfield.com - which I can't recommend enough b/c they give you adapters etc. you'll need - is ready for Sirius. You just need to budget in an extra $60 for this tuner.

just buy the Metra wiring harness? It'll take you longer to put everything back together.

For real. Metra harness. It’s like $10, and they basically adapt everything you need. A few proper crimps outside the car and you have a plug and play harness. 10 minutes. No research needed, the wiring diagram is on the Metra bag, and the wires are color-coded to match any modern stereo making it a no brainer.

Yes, I have been looking at Metra and none seem to match the connector(s) to the (old) radio. They had a decent (not perfect) trim piece I needed. After I research the thread as suggested I'll dig out the amp and look at those connections. No cutting, prefer a harness, may splice. I need an avatar for my profile :)

Hey @shifty`, why is it you don't recommend Crutchfield? Is that a typo?

I've always found them to be great and their prices are competitive with everywhere else. Maybe a few bucks more, but worth it to me for the level of service and dealing with a reputable and longstanding vendor. (they used to be a client of mine 25+ years ago in a different phase of my career)

Correct, you don't connect the METRA harness to the radio harness if you have the in-dash amp. You connect the METRA harness to the amp harness, then recycle the OEM radio and its harness. That thread I linked explains it, and it gives you the correct part numbers for METRA harness. I can give you a diagram if you need it.

And see this thread for faceplate adaptation kits; you may not need one for your '03, I think it's using the proper-width bezel, unlike my later-model 1st gen. But more info on bezels here. Although I swear the same thread is linked from the thread I gave above. Seriously, read that audio section on the thread I linked above. Come back if you're confused and/or have questions. Someone can help.

Can't recommend enough! Sort of an important word to leave out, eh?

I didn't have to deal with the factory amp, but the Metra 70-1761 is exactly what I needed.

My wiring to the HU was cut, so I went to the junkyard and pulled a harness out so I could repair as much as I could before using the Metra plug.

Also, have you read through this post? Might be just what you need.

I never found 'that thread' but I pieced together enough after removing the amp. Those 'two screws' were designed by the devil and accepted by Toyota :( So I ordered the Metra kit to adapt the amplifier connections to my new head unit. I will post a high detail picture of the install to show why the Metra trim is not perfect, but pretty good. I am still interested in getting Sirius XM. So far, very good, this thread helps a lot, shifty is spot on analysis, the truck is lighter after removing those big units :) all your posts are helpful.
still thinking of a good avatar.

my 03 has 40K miles. replaced the timing belt at 28K. technically it's due again. the ball joints have been replaced too.

This link, from above. It's the "here's all the shit you need to know about your truck, including why low mileage can be really bad news with the V8 specifically...."

And the 2nd link I posted a couple of replies later probably covers the fitment/gap issues with the Metra install kit. It'll also show a couple of alternative kits you may prefer if the gaps drive you nuts.
