Not my best work, but they're at least average good to low serious fabricator quality welds.

That and this Miller Matic MiG unit hasn't been service since they bought it 4 years ago. The filler metal sheath is just fucking filthy. Not excuses, just statements of fact

 

I need to learn how to weld. The amount of money it would save me is unreal.

 

I cleaned some of the shit out of the machine, and this is what I'm getting now.

flux125 from the freight. Dirt cheap and gets it done. Unless you wanna go with gas. But truthfully flux core sticks metal together and is a cheap starting option while till being able to make structurally sound toys

 

still some porosity. Kinda odd for MIG

edit: it actually just looks like porosity where you start/stop. You bringing that back a bit before letting off the tiger?

If it was critical structural I would immediately. But seeing as this for a pig feeder I'll do it after it's all welded. Just a wire wheel, no chemical dressing.

Whelp after an hour of diagnosing cleaning fixing and replace parts I got the MiG back up and running at work. Had to grind a weld out for the first time since 2015 when I was in advanced weld school for the Navy, 4955 for fucking life. Don't know what the issue was, but it was shorting the wire feed and pulse arcing. It's not supposed to do either of those things.

Oh and I forgot my cover gas on a test weld. But for no gas that root was fucking mint.

Yeah they're even better now that I fucked with the wire speed. What ever was causing that binding had been there for a minute cause they had it cranked all the way up, and it never seemed as fast I remember. That "good" weld was me trying to keep up with the wire speed after the cleaning. They look as they should now.

 

Back in 15 I did these for a project, but our welder was old AF and the lead was clapped out so bad it had to be laid out in a gentile loop or the feed was horrible. Armature hour for sure, but I love using the welder.

 

Easy fix a new liner and feed Paul's with a new tensioner spring would have done you right

Looks like the gas feed wasn't good maybe, I have forgotten to turn it on and it's way worse than that spittersputter though.
Can you get a decent used MIG (that needs some love) for $500-700, It's on my list of post retirement wants. Recommend a brand?

 

Shit you can get a HF Titanium for that price new, and they good welders. I got the MultiProcess Titanium purse welder and did the foundation welds at my old job on a 80x40 steel warehouse structure. Welded the foundation roots in at 154 amps and then did all the requisite filet, cover and cap passes at 125. Sure I went into duty cycle, but what welder wouldn't at 150+. Welds are still there as is the building

 

And if I was gonna do it again I would have just got that Vulcan 209 AC DC multi process tig welder. 1000 bucks and will absolutely hang with a Lincoln Miller or an ESAB
