For some reason I was thinking you were giving your kid your supercharged Tundra as their 1st car.

I know that's not what you meant, but it popped into my head.

I know what I was like as new driver. I'd have wrecked the tundra the 1st week.

My boy is a couple years from his license and has let me know for quite a while that he would love to drive the tundra. The new tundra came out and he asked when we were going to drive the new truck. Kept telling me how cool it looked. Then I added the SC and decided to keep driving it for a while.

I had a hard enough time keeping my 170 HP bronco on the road, tires down, out of the ditch. And no, it definitely DIDN'T make all of that 170 HP by the time I owned it - maybe 70 HP if I had a tailwind downhill. I'd have either wrecked a 500 HP tundra or gone to jail REAL QUICK...

lmao yeah they wish. My kids are 2.5 so they've got a ways to go. They love the truck and pre sc, I was thinking it would be theirs but not anymore. Now I'm thinking two t100's that we can build when they turn 14 or so. Get them excited working on them for their first car.

Back to surging cruise control. Anyone have any insights into this? Not happening on my truck, and I've heard of it before and now have two people I've tuned with the same issue. Not sure what is causing it, different year trucks, though both have a Magnuson 1900 (though I don't think that has anything to do with it). There was a thread that didn't go anywhere from 1.5 years ago about someone detailing the same issue, though they did not mention it being supercharged but just that it happened after they got it tuned: https://www.tundras.com/threads/surging-cruise-control-after-hp-tune.115852/

I'm not sure where to start and want to avoid sending tunes to minimize brickage chances, but if there's no leads then the only solution is someone else tunes it and hopefully doesn't have this issue, or I change half of everything at a time to try and whittle away to the specific variable. And it doesn't happen to my truck so can't test anything personally.

Truck ends up in 4th gear, torque converter unlocked the entire time. Starts in 6th locked, then cruise activated and cycles unlocked 4/5/6 before settling in on 4th so I'm hesitant to say it's a transmission thing, though maybe forcing the converter to lock up would stop it since the rpm would be more tied into the speed so it can't just do the unloaded revving? I don't know.

No issues with my cruise control. Use it all the time. But I have tweaked my shift points and TC settings so it takes more throttle to make it downshift and the TC is almost always locked in 4-6. No idea if that makes any difference in your situation.

Do they have many miles on the tune? The first time I used cruise after the SC install and tune, my truck did a similar thing - it stuck in fourth for 5 or 10 mins when it definitely didn’t need to be. I dropped it in to S Mode and manually pushed it to 5th, then 6th. I may have needed to disengage Cruise then push it up a gear, then re-engae Cruise. But I didn’t really have the same issue after several trips with Cruise on. It was still happy to downshift and scoot, though.

Years ago, my buddy had a Cummins powered dodge (well a couple - one of pretty much each generation) that we used to haul countertops. After picking up material a few states away and driving home with the cruise on, the vehicle would downshift and surge forward 10 or 15 mph whenever you set it without the trailer hooked up. I think it was expecting a heavier load and throttle up appropriately. After 100 miles and several applications of cruise, it was back to normal.

I wonder if the ECU on our trucks is doing something similar, but the extra power it’s getting makes it think it needs to be in a lower gear until it re learns itself. Just a guess.

On these trucks, was the original stock tune file read and then modified or did you modify the HPtuners provided file?

I’ve seen that happen if the throttle opening angle is maxed out in the “torque limit” (or whatever that table is called, can’t remember off the top of my head). Usually happens on newer trucks.

I don't quite follow your question. I modified the stock file that was read and downloaded from HP Tuners. It wasn't a file provided by a different company if that's your question?

I think he may have been suggesting a N/A calibration versus an HPT canned tune for a S/C as your starting point.

    Stock N/A file.

And @ViktorG was on the money! Reset the torque limits tables back to stock and it fixed it.

I am glad that fixed it! It's an interesting issue, that only happens on some trucks. In my experience, most 2nd gen are fine, but some 2.5 gen have the problem with cruise if the torque limits are removed. Don't know the exact years or calibrations that are affected.

    Ok so for anyone interested…
I upgraded to dw650’s and have been tuning with sniv. Highly recommended. Although you all already know this. Anyway.
535’s were maxed out at 4800
650’s are maxed out at 5500 or 5700
    This is with boost reference
So the blower with sniv 76 pulley is pulling a crazy amount of air in. My PE comes in at 22% throttle and I’m already at 3psi boost. Could dial it back some but doesn’t seem worth it. The tune is great as is and very happy. I’d have to run the math but I’m likely at or near my fuel pump capacity and I know I’m at injector capacity. Happy right now with how the truck runs. It stays at 10.5 pretty much through 5700 and then goes to 11’s when fueling runs out.

    Big kudos to @snivilous
